An Introduction to Elizabeth Grace – Civil Sexual Assault Lawyer

[music] For nearly twenty years, Elizabeth Grace has been representing
survivors of sexual abuse in court cases, appeals (including the Supreme Court of Canada),
human rights forums, and other proceedings against individual,
institutional, corporate and governmental defendants. She has published
widely in the field sexual abuse, been interviewed by the media seeking
expert commentary on cases relating to sexual abuse, and is regularly invited to speak at
sessions educating the legal community, including Crown attorneys and judges
about the issues that arise in this area of practice. Here is an excerpt of an interview
with Elizabeth Grace: I started practicing in the area of civil
sexual assault because I wanted to give a legal voice to the widespread problem of sexual abuse in society. When I started practicing as a civil litigator about eighteen
years ago, the whole area of civil sexual assault
law, unlike criminal sexual assault law, was
really undeveloped. I wanted to change that. I wanted to help develop the area of law in a way that respects and recognizes the harms caused to survivors of sexual abuse and that
provides them with a measure of accountability and redress for those harms. That was also the reason why I decided
to write a book in the area. I wanted to contribute to the
understanding that lawyers, all lawyers whether they’re
on the victim side or on the defence side, and
they understanding that courts have the complex issues that
arise in the area of sexual abuse. [music]
