Bloodiest battle of Chinese Civil War [Eng Sub]《集结号》血腥战斗

1948, early winter, hinterland of east China. Brothers of the 168th Division of KMT army, Central China PLA’s 2nd Division, 139th Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 9th Company commander, Gu Zidi here. On behalf of my company, I greet you. You are completely surrounded. Keep struggling won’t do you any good. We prepared two treats for you: one is bullets, the other is dumplings. If you wanna fight on, we are here till the end. If you are done fighting, surrender your gun for a pair of chopsticks. 9th Company will join you and have dumplings together, like brothers. Old Gu, stop wasting your breath.
(Political Instructor of the 9th Company) Let’s send in our men already!
(Political Instructor of the 9th Company) Just a bit longer. We have them in our pot. What’s the rush to open the lid? Company commander, it’s not right. Have they all escaped by now? The battalion wants our company to spearhead the assault. We can’t wait! Jiao Dapeng!
(1st Platoon commander) Get 6 men and take the point. – Ok. Give them 6 helmets! Smoke grenades! Jiang Maocai!
(Sharpshooter) Go! Take cover! Take cover! Guo Xiaolian, up there! Give me your hand! – Pull me back! Jiang Maocai! Jiang Maocai! Gut those two pricks up there! How many are they? – Don’t know! Cease fire! Cease fire! Get the wounded! Hurry! Cover them! – Get the wounded! Quickly! He’s dead! Come save me! Hurry! Hurry! Argh! Easy! – You guys hurry the damn up! Da Gen, this is gonna hurt! Hang in there! 1st Platoon, follow me! 2nd Platoon, guard the flanks! Don’t bunch up! Spread out! Get down! Take cover! Get back! Get down! Everyone get down! Get down where you are! Don’t run around! Get down! Get up! Everyone attack! – We’ve been ambushed! Get down! 2nd Platoon charge! Back up 1st Platoon! 3rd Platoon get the wounded! Leave the dead, take the ones who still breathe first! Luo, get on the roof! Lu Kuangou (demolitionist)! Jiang Maocai! Don’t cower back there, attack! KMT officer: go get the heavy weapons! Get down! Get down! – Get in! Machine gunners advance! Everyone else stay put! (Lu Kuangou and Jiang Maocai) Old Gu, concentrate the fire! Organize assault teams to attack head-on! We can’t take it. The enemy over there got heavy weapons! Let the men take a breathe! This is no time to take breathe, I won’t accept! I’m the company commander, I call the shots here! You are showing cowardly behavior! You can’t make this call! Are you going in or not? If you don’t then I go! It makes no damn difference! If you wanna eat bullets, nobody stops you! Instructor! (Lu Kuangou and Jiang Maocai) Hurry! Comrades, attack!!! Instructor! Don’t shoot! We surrender! We surrender don’t shoot! Don’t shoot! The enemy surrendered. Tell them to pick up their guns. We refuse their surrender! Pick up your gun! Pick up your gun! Nobody moves! Don’t move! Luo, what the hell you waiting for? Open fire! They surrendered already! Jiang Maocai! Jiang Maocai! Shoot! Maocai! We don’t kill prisoners! What are you acting like a Bodhisattva for? Our instructor got blown up in half! (Subtitles and Timing brought to you by: MLK Sub)

A very touching story, it depicts the ugly side of war. How Captain Gu fought for the honour of his dead comrades is commendable, man of such stature is far and few.

Chinese and Korean War films are legit. As a history buff, I’m naturally drawn to WWII but other pivotal 20th century conflicts such as the Chinese Civil War, Second Sino-Japanese War and even Korean War are virtually unknown in the U.S. so hats off to the studios that crank these out.

One thing is not real: in the civil war, PLA's urban combat tactics emphasizes that soldiers should avoid assault directly on streets, but ask combat engeneers to blow walls and get through in buildings…

No, the bloddiest battle was Battle of Kinmen Island, where the Communists lost 9000 soldiers, massacred on the beach. It is called the biggest disaster of the PLA in the civil war.

It simply amazes me of how the Chinese and Russians send their troops to die so unnecessarily. Many of them charged a well placed machine just for them all to get mowed down.

China may have different ideals to America but China has some beautiful aspects. The people, history and culture. Tis a shame people are more loyal to their ideology than each other.

I remember going to this movie when I was 9. This was the first scene of the movie and it scared me so much that I dragged my parents out of the theater. We seriously need a movie rating system in China….

The shaky camera feels way too deliberate. It's a great scene but the film director did not utilize this method properly.

Director of this film Feng Xiaogang actually got famous by making comedies, but his coordinating ability on the war scene is perfect. Here I highly recommend the 芳华 (The Youth, 2017), in which the war scene is pretty impressive although it only runs for 6 mintues a long take.
