Boundless: Meeting Global Challenges and Preparing Global Citizens

One of the things that really made me choose U of T was how I immediately felt like I was in a community. When your professor is the
person that’s producing the research you’re studying that’s so inspiring because you’re
sitting in a room with one of the most brilliant minds in the world. For the past two years, I’ve been working
on using bacteria to degrade plastics. As an undergrad student, one of the things U of T really pushes for is doing experiments and publishing papers which is great in building credibility for the students. The University of Toronto is Canada’s premier research University. Our professors are extraordinarily well networked into other global networks. Our students come from around the world. I mean this truly is a global University. Getting a degree in the University of Toronto will help me go back home to transform the lives of other young
people and impact them directly. We’re basically making molecules that can target human cancers and kill cancer cells very safely and actually selectively over healthy cells. We make chip based devices that are very good at picking up on the low levels of molecules that tell you whether disease is present. We reach out to the clinical community. We try to understand what unmet needs they may have and then we collaborate with them very closely to take what we’ve done in the lab and really transform it into something that they can use. Getting any new project, whether it be a company or a research off the ground, and self-sustaining is a really big challenge. Here at the University of Toronto they’ve been able to mentor and foster graduate students that have great technology on how to start thinking like a business entrepreneur. We attract people from all over the world and we attract the best people from all over the world. That’s what’s made this University so great. At the same time that we’re Boundless
in our orientation looking at the world, we’re very grounded in the experience of this city, Toronto. Boundless means to me exactly what the University of Toronto encapsulates. They’re about a broad education. They’re about inter-disciplinary perspectives. If you see someone that you
want to work with or collaborate with then you can do it without thinking twice. That
to me is Boundless. Boundless means redefining possibility. Boundless is both the unlocking of that insatiable curiosity and Boundless is the promise of a world yet to come. Thank you.
