Carl Sagan on the Exploration of Mars – The Planetary Society

Our view of Mars has been forever
changed by American robot orbiters and landers. The Viking Lander cameras sent the surface of Mars back to Earth. Each viewer became an explorer
seeing a new world for the first time, an alien planet that was somehow eerily
familiar but at the same time seemingly lifeless. The Viking orbiters saw ice caps, canyons, craters, and the morning mist in the valleys. We have found, on bone dry Mars, thousands of channels that resemble ancient river valleys. A billion years ago, was Mars awash with mighty rivers? The Martian sunset symbolizes the many
mysteries that the red planet holds. To solve those mysteries we must return to Mars.
