Civil Engineering Field Session at Mines

Civil Engineering Field Session at Mines

(upbeat guitar music) – The civil engineering field session here at the Colorado School of Mines is a really unique experience for students to learn the tools of the
trade to get out in the field. – We try to cover the basics of here’s how you do
surveying and then here’s how you apply it to different
parts of civil engineering. It can be applied to
structural, geo-technical, water science, construction, roads. – First two weeks of the
course we’re out in the field here, the survey field here at Mines Park. And we’re just going through
different techniques and tools. – Learning how to use
different instruments for surveying and then
this past week we’ve been in the computer lab
learning how to do AutoCAD using some of the data we
collected the first two weeks. – [Student] The AutoCAD Civil
3D portion of the course was really critical. – AutoCAD is that one program
that connects everything that we do out in the field. We can lay out houses and buildings, you can make grading plans, you can design roadways. – Stuff that we pass onto the
students during field sessions is very well received and valued by the people out in industry. – Later in life, this is
like the kind of thing where like a building will fall down if you don’t get the
measurement really accurate. So I think that’s like,
it’s meant to show us the importance of that and
it just makes it more real for word problems on papers that seemed just like a hassle before. – Especially in field
session, I’ve started to really relate to a lot
of the other students and it’s been fun hanging
out with them in the field and then doing homework
with them afterwards. It starts to build a lot of comradery, especially field session, but in classes as well since
I’ve started taking classes with the same people over and over, it’s been a really enjoyable experience to get to know people. – It’s a transition period for students as they go from purely academic to applied design type work.
