Civil Rights Hero Elijah Cummings Dead at 68

Civil Rights Hero Elijah Cummings Dead at 68

very sad news that we woke up to this morning,
a really big loss to the activism community. Congressman Elijah Cummings, a real civil
rights era hero, uh, has died at age 68. Uh, his office reports the cause of death
as quote, complications concerning longstanding health challenges. It’s known that he had a procedure recently. The full details of everything that he was
battling have not been made public and comings has been visible recently, um, as a house
Democrat because he’s been involved in investigations into Donald Trump. He was involved in some key, a questioning
of Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen before Cohen went to prison. When he testified before a number of committees. He was involved in a horrible controversy
with Donald Trump about rodent infested Baltimore. But this is a man with a life of civil rights
activism under his belt. He was a lawyer by education, but really an
activist at heart. He had 12 honorary doctorate degrees when
he was 11 years old. He helped to racially integrate a local swimming
pool while being attacked with bottles and rocks in the Maryland house of delegates. He was the youngest chairman of the legislative
black caucus. Uh, also the first black American to be speaker
pro temp. And more recently he’s been on the forefront
of political battles around the shootings of unarmed black men of Trump’s impeachment,
the immigration crisis, child internment camps. Really a loss. And I’m sure we’ll be looking at more and
more of his accomplishments, but just a bad week of news all around, uh, out of the middle
East, out of the white house everywhere. And really sad news to wake up to this morning. Alijah Cummings dead at 68 and we will be
talking more about this upcoming. Let’s talk a little bit about the endorsement
game.

Good riddance. Many sheep fell for his tantrum at the end of the Cohen hearing. I never heard such outrage from him, regarding the deep squalor and misery of his own constituents.

I was shocked to hear that he was in hospice and the House recently had conference calls with him from there. Great guy tho, Trump should be extremely intimidated by Mr Cummings’ morality and intelligence.

Sold out to the Clinton machine and ruined his legacy. BLATANTLY lied and said he didnt know who Bernie Sanders was. He embodied much of what is wrong in government, and his passing presents an opportunity for an uncorrupted person to now speak for the people and represent their interests, and not the interest of a few rich classholes

I usually find Dave pretty rational and fair, but this is only half the story. Whatever he was in his youth, he was a corrupt, inept bully who lived large while skimming off the top and running his district into the ground. People acting like he's some hero lol gtfo…

Mr Cummings was a sell out to Hillary Clinton when he could have supported Sanders. Corrupted by the system he sought to change. NO HERO

I watched him question the former governor of Michigan about the Flint water crisis. He cared very deeply and he didn’t take anyone’s 💩. He is a legend and will be missed.

I hope 45 when he's sitting in a hospital bed will think about all the terrible things he said and done and Only God will forgive him… who knows what he believes in

The piece “Trump” wrote in his condolences of Elijah, suddenly all respectful and beautiful words, honouring him like noting happened, were just like spitting on him one last time.

I am appreciative, that I lived in a time to hear and see this man. I will remember, celebrate, and keep alive his truths. His strength will not be forgotten amongst the years. He has inspired many, too many, to ever be blocked out.

It's a shame that such a great public servant will not get the coverage he deserves because of the 24/7 coverage that Trump is receiving.

No hero by all means…this man actually cried over immigration conditions but shed not a single tear for the Baltimore living conditions in whic blacks reside. Baltimore has become a shit hole environment, completely rat infested for decades while this man has been in office and effected no change…. so glad he's gone.

It's sad when someone dies, but that doesn't mean we can't still criticize his terrible policy. We should learn from how he destroyed his district over the past 23 years. Seriously, 23 years and look where it is now.

Hmmm…David, you may be confusing Cummings with John Lewis who actually is an icon of the Civil Rights Age. The fact that Cummings, being born in 1951, means he was 13 when the civil rights act became law in 1964 and 14 when the voting rights act became law. Cummings was only 17 when MLK Jr was killed. Lewis was 28 when King was killed. He is 79 almost 80. They are two different generations. Lewis is a Silent and Cummings was a Boomer. It's very very sad though!

I didn't really start paying much attention to politics until 2015, right around when the Planned Parenthood "selling baby parts" hoax occurred. Elijah Cummings's statement during the hearing in the midst of that caught my attention, and in that moment he became one of the biggest influences on my political views as a fierce, logical, and pragmatic progressive leader. I was in the beginning of my engineering career, but for a moment at the time I imagined that if I were to switch careers to go into public service instead, he would have been the Congressman I wanted to work for. I had no idea he was sick. His wisdom will be sorely missed.

A real loss to us all. The amount of courage it took for Elijah Cummings and men and women like him to fight for civil rights is almost beyond the ability for most folks to imagine. Facing snarling police dogs and snarling white racists, being battered by billy clubs, and smashed against the pavement by powerful fire hoses takes a devotion to cause that few of us are capable of. The tragedy is that after all he went through to win rights due him as a citizen of the United States he would have to witness Trump and the Republican Party's attack on the very Constitution that served as his leverage against bigotry and racism. My hat is off to Elijah and my condolences to his family and friends.
