Katina: So, what’s real ID? Sidney: Real ID is the new standard set by the federal government for state ids and driver’s licenses. Why would I want a Real ID? Well, beginning October 1, 2020 you won’t be able to board any plane or go into any federal building unless you have a Real ID, a US passport or some other federal ID. A Real ID will have a gold star on it. A standard ID or driver’s license will now say “NOT FOR FEDERAL OFFICIAL USE.” If your current Nevada license or ID doesn’t have either of these markings, it was issued prior to when Real ID in Nevada went into effect in 2014. You should upgrade to a Real ID at your next renewal. How do i get a Real ID? it’s easy as 1-2-3. 1. You need one proof of identity – a U.S. birth certificate, a U.S. passport, a Real ID from another state, a Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization. a Permanent Resident card or an Employment Authorization card will work. Can I use my hospital birth certificate? No. [buzzer] You must use the birth certificate that was issued by the state or local jurisdiction with the raised seal on it. Also, if your name is changed because of marriage or court order you must present official documentation of the change such as marriage certificates, divorce decrees or court orders. 2. You’ll need one proof of your social security number. You can do this by bringing your Social Security card, a W-2, a 1099 or a printed paystub with the full number displayed. I have photocopies of my birth certificate and Social Security card. Are these acceptable? No. [trombone wah-wah-wah-wah] Identity and Social Security documents must be originals or certified copies. 3. You must present two proofs of residency. You can show a lease or mortgage, a bill, bank statement, a paystub with your address listed, voter registration, proof of Nevada insurance or any document that is similar to these that shows your name and address and is dated within the past 60 days. Is that all it takes to get a Real ID? That sure is easy. For real ID takes one proof of identity, one proof of social and two proofs of residency.
