Global Business and Society Students Take on Intensive Team Project

– We work in a group of six people. Every group, normally we
are different nationalities, and therefore it’s really
about working together, find a way to be a leader
or an active follower. Every week is different. – We’re slowly learning
how to work together with people that are very
different from ourselves, which I think is a very
important skill to have in the future when we’re in the workplace. The Synchrony project,
we are asked to think about how Synchrony
can be more competitive amongst other financial
service institutions. – We asked the students to
think about how Synchrony can add more value to their merchant base. We partner with a lot
of merchants across all of the United States,
and we are always looking to not just provide
financing to their consumers but also to add value to the merchants by growing their business
and bringing more consumers to them to be able to sell their product. – It was very important
that we were in the team until we started with the project. Because by the time when we
started with the project, we already knew how the team works, how the dynamic works. – One of the things that we
try to do with the students is just a combination
of stretch and support. We’re creating this great
learning environment for them, but every now and then
we want to stretch them. And so this is now in the
middle of this first semester. Show us what you can do in six days. – We started on Friday with
a company visit full day. That was pretty interesting
and pretty important because that really gave me the sense of the business, how the business works. Over the weekend, we did some
interviews with merchants to get a little bit of their perspective, why they are choosing
Synchrony, in order to get us a little bit set up for how we
want to tackle this problem, from what direction
and so on and so forth. Monday we had an innovation workshop. – Before the workshop, we
didn’t really have an idea of what our product would
be, so that was definitely really helpful in terms
of helping us think about the problem and think
about how to approach it. – Any time that you invest, being out there, talking to
people and observing people and understanding people
is a very good investment of your time. – After the workshop, we kind
of took all the Sticky Notes and kind of went through
them again as a team and picked out what’s feasible
and out of these ideas, which ones are the best ones. – The more we working together,
the more we understood what was our competencies
and how to bond together these competencies in order to
leverage then the final work. Since we are working every week, I can see that there has been a lot of
improvements for my group. Being in front of executive
and then to be challenged on our idea, it was
like, it was challenging, it was like a moment to really work on the way you present your idea. Because it’s not just
on your idea in itself, but even the way that
you deliver the content. Because at the end of
the day, we are judged always by other people. – My expectations was having new ideas. I think it’s great to
have diversity of thought, and people who don’t think
about Synchrony every day and think about our exact
merchants every day, so when you have kind
of some new perspectives and diversity of thought
come into the mix, you really get to have ideas that may have not previously percolated.
