How Blind People Use A White Cane

How Blind People Use A White Cane

I’m here with Jackie and she’s from NewsyNews and check her out – she’s sighted! (music) (Jackie) So, what is the deal with the stick? (Tommy) So, this is my walking stick or white cane. People call it all sorts of things. I just call it my stick. So what it does is, I can walk around and this will hit things before I do.
(Jackie) Okay, that makes sense. (Tommy) Yeah, so, like, what I would do for example is if I put my left foot down the stick is over on the right.
(Jackie) Okay.
(Tommy) So it’s always in front of me and then right foot down and the stick is on the left.
(Jackie) Alright.
(Tommy) Right? So I can just walk. So we’ll just go for a little… (Jackie) And… Oh, look at that!
(Tommy) See, and right by the plant. (Jackie) This is impressive actually. (Tommy) And I’ll turn around and I’ll come back. (Jackie) Oh, you’re going to hit some kids.
(Tommy) Well, kids are going to hit me. Sorry!
(Jackie) That’s right. More importantly. (Jackie) That’s cool. (Tommy) And about here, right?
(Jackie) Yeah.
(Tommy) We’ll stop here. (Jackie) I like it.
(Tommy) What do you think? You want to try it?
(Jackie) I want to try it. (Tommy) Alright so all you want to do is, again, like I said, when your left foot down, stick over on the right. (Jackie) Right.
(Tommy)Right foot down. Stick on the left. So you just give it a go. And now, do you promise not to cheat?
(Jackie) I promise not to cheat.
(Tommy) Promise?
(Jackie) Scouts — I was never a scout. (Tommy) I’ll tell you what. Pinky swear.
(Jackie) Done. Pinky swear.
(Tommy) Alright. Cool. That’s a promise. (Jackie) This is going to be really scary.
(Tommy) No it’s not. You’ve got the stick in front of you so don’t worry. Just don’t go too fast. And just nice to easy.
(Jackie) Okay. Now are you supposed to I saw you went, like, tap… tap. Are you supposed to tap…
(Tommy) Yes, just tap it back and forth. (Jackie) …As opposed to sliding.
(Tommy) Well some people slide. I choose to tap.
(Jackie) Okay. (Tommy) Tapping works for me.
(Jackie) Are you okay if I leave you?
(Tommy) Yeah. You go on ahead. I’ll stand here and watch. (laughs)
(Jackie) I like that. Wait, when do I stop?
(Tommy) Ben will yell at you. Ben the cameraman will yell at you and tell you when to stop. (Jackie) Deal. Alright. Cool. Alright…
(Tommy) Eyes closed. Off you go.
(Jackie) Eyes closed.
(Tommy) Good luck. (light music)
(Jackie) This is so crazy. Wow. This is nerve racking. Oh my — okay. I feel like. I have my hand up for no reason. I — wow. Okay, so the farther I go, the more nervous get because I feel like… Should I turn around? Ben? Yes?
(Ben in background) Yes.
(Jackie) Okay. (Jackie) This is crazy. You do hear a lot more when you can’t see anything. Oooh. Oh. It caught — I didn’t walk into a planter. The stick is very usefull. (Jackie) This is so scary. Ooh! I don’t know what that is. That is — Is it the wall? Can anyone tell me what this is?
(Ben in bg) Just try to get around it. (Tommy) Come back to me.
(Jackie) Oh, oh, I heard you. Okay. (Tommy) Just come back. Just follow my voice.
(Jackie) Alright. So it was a planter. Okay.
(Tommy) Alright. Don’t worry about that. Just keep on moving. Let’s see if you can whack me in the shins with the stick when you get to me. (Jackie) What?
(Tommy) Let’s see if you can find my shins here with the stick.
(Jackie) Okay. (Tommy) Keep tapping. Tap, tap, tap. Oh, you’re just about here. And you got me. Right there. Stop.
(Jackie) Can I open my eyes? (Tommy) You may open your eyes.
(Jackie) I did a good job!
(Tommy) How was it? (Jackie) It was a really — it was… hard. Really hard. (Tommy) What was going through your mind as you were doing that?
(Jackie) So the further I got away from you the scarier it got. Because I knew I was sort of like on my own a little bit more. So the farther away I sort of felt alone. And then, then when I heard your voice I was like, ‘oh, yes!’ And you also hear a lot more. You do sort of — everything gets magnified. Because you do have to rely on that. You probably have, like, amazing hearing. (Tommy) What?
(Jackie) You probably have — ahhh! That was so good. (credits music) (Tommy) What’s your channel?
(Jackie) My channel is NewsyNews N-e-w-s-y-N-e-w-s. So please go check it out and subscribe. (Tommy) So what do you do on NewsyNews? What happens?
(Jackie) I do a ton of comedy. A lot of satire, a lot of political satire. So, if you like the Daily Show, or if you like Colbert, hopefully you’ll like me. (Beep)
(Jackie) Do I look nice for the camera?
(Tommy) Oh, you look tremendous. You look friggin’ hot.
(Jackie) I would trust you over anyone.
(Tommy) Hello! (Jackie) Okay. I could be in my PJs right now. I could be nude for all you know.

never stand in the way of a blind person walking. They can't see you and don't know you're there unless you alert them ahead of time.

How do blind people know where they going. I live in nyc and always see them going down the train and waiting for the train by themselves I'm like how they know where they are going.

Your hearing definitely gets better. I'm nearsighted but hate wearing my glasses so I got used to the slightly blurry and bad double vision. I found I pretty much adapted to using hearing and it got really sensitive, and as for nearsightedness, I sorta compensated by recognizing giant color blobs. XD

Are there new better innovative products out for the blind?

I’ll share my ideas and you can take them to government and they can find the appropriate engineers like Apple iPhone people to invent special phones
And speaking recognition cameras like an indestructible GoPro that can talk to you about what it sees ahead and sound s loud alarm and spinning colored lights to get cars attention when you are crossing the street.
Or in danger of calling off a subway
Edge. This camera would either be in
Virtual reality sun glasses or at the end
    If your cane or both.

My other idea is to have raised 3D
Numbers in each currency , simple
    But identifiable.

It looks really hard to learn how to read Braille, why not babe iPad that you put on each page of the book and it reads it out loud?.

There ought to be s stiff punishment for anyone who doesn’t stop immediately to let you cross street
Or help you if you need assistance.
Or cheat you out of fair price in your
Bills and purchases or returning your change.

    Thanks Tommy!
I‘m a computer science student from germany, and I‘m currently working on a „Being Blind“ simulation in VR.
I‘m currently programming the cane and need to get a better understanding on how you use it 😉 That video helps quite a bit.
    Thank you!

it also hits stupid people who won't get out your way, when I had training for my white cane I would tell myself kick the cane to the opposite foot as it can be hard to remember the other side for the cane if you have a heap of stuff to remember all ready. This can is also quite big for her, they match the cane to your height.

So embarrassing question- when you go number 2 how do you know when you're done wiping? I know that is a really personal question but in the winter when we lose electricity because of the snow I am always scared I haven't wiped enough. For real I am dying to know the answer.

This guy is very nice. I have impaired vision my entire life but at night it is especially hard to see past the glare of inter-ocular lens implants. I need the cane and this video is helping me learn how to use it. Though o legally blind I still have enough vision to read, use computers and even ride a bike but only during daylight. At night it’s a different world; I miss steps on staircases and bump into people sideways.

I’ve never actually seen a blind person wave their cane back and forth like that. All the blind folks I’ve met (granted that’s not many) just hold it directly out in front of them.
