When we were kids, we were told we could be anything we wanted, but growing up we realized they were wrong, because in a society like ours we don’t choose who we are. Everyone else does. It takes a tenth of a second for our brains to place a label on somebody. We are pushed by our peers, teachers, parents, friends, the words whispered behind our backs and said to our faces to be something we are not. Now… …we’ve grown up. We’ve been at it so long, day, after month, after year, after decade, caking on layers of labels and trying so hard to live up to standards that exist only for the spotlight and red carpets… …but no labels are worse than the ones we give ourselves.. We’ve lost ourselves. somewhere beneath the expectations to be somebody… …anybody other than ourselves. We have forgotten ourselves. We moan, and we talk, and we yell, and we fight, and we scream about how much we hate the way things are, how we hate all the false and double standards, how we hate the names, but we won’t take them off, nor take the time to look beyond them, because we’re so much more afraid of what we’ll find beneath.. So why try… to be anything more? What’s the point… ..if all anyone will ever see are the labels they’ve given you? When will we strip away the labels and face our fears? Face… ..ourselves? My name is Angela Shipman. I’m a Girl Scout and this.. is my Gold Award Project. I call the project “Rewire Society” because we’re reconditioning the human mind. It takes a tenth of a second for someone to label another, but we’re going to make it so it takes a tenth of a second for someone to empathize. Each season, I will ask the world a question regarding what they would change about today’s society on our website and across all social media. When you answer, my models and I will get to work and interpret your input. Then, we’ll flood the internet with these photographs and films inspired by your dreams. We complain about society’s flaws, but we ARE society. So let’s change it for something good. because everyone is fighting their own battles, and we’re stronger when we fight together. We are fighting insecurity one picture at a time. We’re stripping away the society that pulls people down and shames them for being overweight, or homosexual, or… anything different.. ..and we’re replacing it with one that builds them up. So how can you help? How can you get involved? Go to http://www.rewiresociety.com. Answer our “Question in Season.” Tell us how you would change the way things are. How will you rewire society? (Chuckles) Well… …that’s up to you.
