for a spot in the championships. When we talk about elimination races, the
pressure just ramps up.>>It really does. We have a lot of drivers that need really
good finishes today to move on. Remember, they’re in major trouble. The pressure is on a lot of drivers in today’s
race.>>It’s at the monster mile, one of the most
difficult racetracks on the circuit. High-speed, hi-bank, narrow. Lots of practice missing because of weather,
Rick.>>There’s a 32-year-old that said the gray
hairs begin to get a little bit more on my head when we come to races like this. It’s time for pre-race ceremonies. Let’s go trackside.>>Please rise and remove your hat as they

bringing back ohhhhhh yeah>>>Welcome to the monster mile. Dover international speedway. Let’s head trackside. Kelli stavast.>>He comes to this race with a 26-point line. He doesn’t take any comfort in those points
because simply put this is Dover and way too much can happen. This team is not taking anything for granted. He’ll start fourth, Mike.>>Just how cool can this elimination mean? A year earlier Jamie Mcmurray came in fourth. That’s not enough to stave off elimination. Today he has to overcome a deficit and clip
the crossover line. Anything short of
a victory, nothing is guaranteed.>>They gave him two pieces of advice. Number one, don’t worry about the points today. We’ll worry about that. I want you to focus on the race. Number two, I want you to race like there
truly is no tomorrow. Dave?>>Tony Stewart ranks 15 out of 16. He need as good race today. He doesn’t necessarily need to win but winning
is something he’s familiar with here. He’s won three times at Dover international
speedway. Now it’s time to get the monsters under the
hood cranked up at Dover.>>>And now race fahns for the most famous

only way to make it to the next round is to win the race.>>Win the race. Easier said than done. Let’s take look at the starting grid brought
to you by nationwide. The grid set by the rule book. Owners’ points. Front row having Brad keselowski and martin
Truex Jr. Brad keselowski, only driver with top fives in both chase races.>>Behind in row 2 is Kyle Busch. A two-time winner at Dover next to Matt Kenseth.>>In row three, Joey Logano next to Kevin
Harvick.>>Row 4 has Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson.>>Behind them is chase Elliott who finished
third in may alongside Edwards.>>Back in row 7, two drivers that are five
points smack to the cut-off, that’s Jamie Mcmurray and Austin Dillon.>>And those two drivers are trying to work
their way, Tony Stewart and chrisescher.>>Kasey kahne and Jeff Gordon filling in
for Dale Earnhardt Jr.>>And in row 10, Ryan Newman and Ryan Blaney. Welcome in. Brad keselowski. Jeff?>>Hey, Brad, it’s Jeff up in the booth. Are you with us?>>Yes, sir. How are you doing?>>I’m doing great. How does that affect you going into this race?>>Well, that’s a good question. Of course, you’d like to have more info. We did run. I thought we had some a great ones. They worked really hard to give us a fast
Ford to unload. I thought we were way better this time around
than we were in the last race, so I’m pretty encouraged and feel good about it.>>How does your team approach this race? What does that mean to you going into today’s
race?>>It’s good feeling. You can’t take anything for granted in this
sport. Unless you’re locked in, you ee got to make
sure you get the most of it each and every day. Something could jump up and bite you. It seems to be good. That will all take care of itself.>>Good luck to you and your team. Have fun today.>>Thanks, Jeff. Have a good one up in the booth.>>And we’re going ride along with a few different
drivers other than bran keselowski. One of those being the 88 of Jeff Gordon with
the nationwide camera. He’ll start 18. Austin Dillon with the aaa onboard camera
starts 14th. Jamie Mcmurray has the credit one onboard
camera and will start in row 7 in the 13th position. Kevin Harvick and the number 4 starts in row
3 in the sixth spot. Kyle Busch has the sprint onboard camera and
will start in row 2 in the third position. And we just heard from him. Starting up front on the pole with the Ford
incar camera is Brad keselowski. Not only will we ride along with a few different
cars on the racetrack, but also the aerial coverage provided by smithfield foods. I want to take a closer look at Dover speedway. 400 laps, 400 miles, pit road speed. They will have to slow all the way down to
35 miles an hour when they get to that line right there. A and the fuel window, 85 to 90 laps today,
Steve.>>Yeah. That fuel window will definitely be tested. It seems here at monster mile as chaotic as
the race is, there will be long stretches where they’ll try to straech their sunoco
fuel.>>Let’s take a look at this week’s drive
to the championship. Two advancing to the round of 1 the, martin
Truex and Kevin Harvick. Even Brad keselowski said you can’t count
on anything at the monster mile because it can come up and grab you.>>We’ve seen so much. Wrecks getting onto pit road. This track has a lot of challenges. One thing going on today, the track has more
rubber on it right now than at any point during the whole weekend they had practice. We’ll see who can get in early and stay in
the race.>>Let’s listen in on communications from
the 14 team a few minutes ago.>>We’ll take whatever it gives us at the
end. I’ll tell you one thing, this race is not
going to define the season this team’s had.>>They’ve had a great one. They were able to get a win earlier this year
which put them into the chase. In Tony Stewart’s final sprint cup series
season. Two by two they come down the back straight
and into turns three and four as we’re awaiting the green flag. Brad keselowski has chosen the inside line. Martin Truex Jr. On the outside line. Those in the chase all have yellow splirts,
yellow spoilers and yellow banners across the windshield as they come out of turn number
4. The elimination race is under way from the
monster mile.>>Brad keselowski is off to a good start,
Rick. We have all 16 chasers starting right up in
the front eight rows.>>Just a few hours ago, that outside line
is going to be ready to go. You see Kevin Harvick on the outside lane. I think you can trust it. I think you can go up there and expect there’s
going to be a lot of gristle.>>Sorting out positions early in this run. Denny Hamlin on the inside of the 48 of Jimmie
Johnson. Jimmie Johnson, a ten-time winner at Dover. Again, this is the race where he was eliminated
a year ago from chase contention.>>That elimination, Rick, last year, people
over 15, 16, 18 points, they had a little bit of kamness about them thinking they were
good. But after seeing Jimmie Johnson’s mechanical
issue, the nerves in the garage seem to be turned up even more this year.>>Brad keselowski now has a mirror full of
martin Truex Jr. The 78 team still successful early on in this
year. Kept that consistent throughout the year and
then won the first race of the chase in chicagoland and now battling for the lead with Brad keselowski. Early laps of this race.>>Just no surprise that all of a sudden you’re
executing with a lot of pace early in the race. Everywhere they go, every kind of racetrack,
they have speed. It won’t surprise me one bit to see them go
by. I think he’s a little bit quicker. Put the pressure on right now.>>And it might happen sooner than later as
he looks to the inside and martin Truex Jr. To the point at Dover.>>And Brad, you saw him put his hand out
the window on lap 6. Is not going to go in there side by side with
a car that’s a little faster than him. He cannot afford that. Clean. That will be enough to advance around number
12.>>You would think they would take it easy. A lot of people in the media gave him grief
for how hard he ran his teammate. He said, hey, listen, I’ve only one six races
in my careen. If I get a chance to win the race, I’m going
to go for it. Nebraska time he gets a chance to win a race
and run up front, he’s certainly going to do it. Kevin Harvick with a nice pass.>>Freaky pass number four. Kevin Harvick makes a pass on the 20, Matt
Kenseth, he moves up a spot. Mike?>>As we document the race for the championship,
Rick, we’ve got to remember, this is more than just a driver and a crew chief. The team member shares a part in this. That’s especially true for the front tire
changer. Kinkaid on Mcmurray’s team, he’s one of five
members of his family who works in this sport. He has two brothers and his father. His mother used to work in an administrative
role for Jeff Gordon. The caveat, none of thecaids have won.>>Eight points out of the transfer spot. The top 12 advance at the end of this race.>>You know, show what the one is up against. Eight points out but running into 13th position. Remember last year ran fourthnd a it wasn’t
enough. This is the type of racing we’re going to
see all day long to try to move forward. You’re going have to be up in the first, second,
third position.>>As a driver, what are you feeling out here
now, Jeff. You’ve gone ten laps. What kind of information are you collecting
that you can tell your crew chief.>>As I ride along with Jamie Mcmurray, what
you hear with throttle and see, all of those things are very important. Listen to how he’s going in throttle and watch
the wheel input.>>Battle for second taking place. Here comes Kyle Busch looking to the inside
of Brad keselowski. He moves up. Second goes to Kyle Busch.>>Kyle is one of those teams that on Friday
they worked exclusively on racing. They never went and made a qualifying run,
never practiced qualifying. Of course, qualifying got rained out. With all the teams on the racetrack today,
that 18 car, they have more laps on the racetrack than anyone else.>>You heard Marty mention for martin Truex
Jr., if he has an opportunity to win a race, he’s going to take advantage of it because
he only has six career wins in the sprint cup series. Three of those have come this year. Although this is the sixth straight race that
has been LED by martin Truex Jr., and that’s the longest ever streak for martin Truex Jr. As far as leading races as Jimmie Mcmurray
continues to close the gap between him and Jamie Mcmurray.>>He’s looking for him to make a mistake,
find a weak point. Right now we don’t see him in the bottom of
the track. This is the opportunity right here. Jamie is going to keep pushing that, try to
get alongside him. As he turns, he watches him. He’s thinking, can I roll the middle, carry
enough. The difficulty is once you get there, you
have to pinch your car off, turn it more than the guy on the outside. It makes it hard. So the one is a little quicker than the 41,
but because the outside groove is good, it’s going to be a difficult pass. He’s alongside of him and now I think he’ll
drive away from Kurt Busch.>>And right behind the 41 now is the 3 of
Austin Dillon. Austin Dillon, one of those drivers outside
the top 12 trying to get in to advance his championship hopes. Martin Truex Jr. Out front once again at dover.today we’re
gonna be comparing the roll formed steel bed of the Chevy Silverado to the aluminum bed

and get past the 78. We talked about it earlier. This outside race, they come in. Only at lap 25 and they’re already way up
the racetrack.>>And, Jeff, that’s the key for the 18. They asked him to move up the lane, and he
did it. He was able to take off. Gets the lead and goes back to the bottom
of the racetrack. How did you spend your day? Kyle Busch spent the day at the white house
with president Obama. He said, I thought it was so cool that he
asked what I do before the race and also about my son. Very cool for the team as they were recognized
by the white house for their championship. Kyle Busch right now in the lead for the championship
at Dover. We’re just 96 miles away from the white house
here at Dover international speedway. 48 of Jimmie Johnson. This was team communications just moments
ago.>>41’s lap time is good.>>The 41 car?>>Yes.>>Or the 18. I don’t have time right now.>>0-negative. Keep doing what we’re doing for now.>>Okay.>>That was spotter coverage presented by
liberty mutual insurance, helping drivers worry less.>>That’s basically a conversation between
Earl and Jimmie Johnson’s spotter Chad Knaus. Probably on a different channel, couldn’t
hear that. He wanted to suggest it. Chad Knaus wanted to know where they’re running. He wants to stay on the bottom. He’s like stay in the black and try to conserve
the front right tire.>>I think that eat important. It’s a little harder on tires.>>A lot of rubber put down on the racetrack. Most wins all-time at Dover presented by sprint
goes to Jimmie Johnson. Ten wins already. He could be adding to that later today and
throughout his career. Sprint’s reliability is better. Visit sprint.com/network today. Currently Jimmie Johnson in that 48 running
in the seventh spot. Just behind a pretty good battle here for
position between Kenseth and Logano and then also Jamie Mcmurray and also Austin Dillon. Dillon able to get by the one of Mcmurray. Austin Dillon who’s behind Jamie Mcmurray
and was behind him in the points. Because of that pass, that puts Austin Dillon
one point in front of Jamie Mcmurray and they continue to fight out of the 13th and 14th
positions.>>We’ve seen it over and over and over. We’ve talked about it. Last year, it wasn’t enough to allow him to
move along. We saw him last year.>>Closing in on the competition. We’ll take a quick break and be back for first

place as the field is heading to pit row. Kelli?>>You see Matt Kenseth coming down to pit
row. It looks like it’s going to be a spot for
them, Kenny.>>For this stop, Oranges. It’s going to be a corner stop. Got better the longer they ran, Dave.>>Bottom right, keselowski, his teammates
third. Keselowski was saying his car was tight in
the middle and loose. As for the 22 of Logano, he said the entry
is good to the one-third mark and then I have trouble turning it. Four tires. Sunoco fuel for both tires.>>Race-off pit row brought to you by Geico. (Sloshing)

responsible for the content of this advertising.>>>This is why wins are so important. Kevin Harvick will advance. Kyle Larson has an issue. He doesn’t have a win. He’s fighting to get into the top 12. Mike.>>He’s on pit row trying to determine what’s
causing the loss of power. Thaw were about to change the battery. He said, I’ve got power back. It may have been a loose plug. Obviously a costly period of time early in
this race for Kyle Larson.>>He’s currently one lap down, Rick. So if he can get out in front of the leaders
and stay in front of them, he’ll only be one lap down.>>He doesn’t want to speed on pit road. He gets off. Hopefully he didn’t speed. Green flag back in the air. Kyle Busch, martin Truex, Brad keselowski
going up high, loses second. The 6 of Trevor Bayne was too fast on pit
road. Came in 24th and served that penalty.>>I can promise you there, Kyle Busch, with
the situation, if he can get up there and put a second lap on him, he’ll do everything
in his power to do that.>>That sounltded like that 42 lost power
as Mike reported, Rick, and then they found power when they started messing with the battery. Basically the battery sits in a box and they
have two terminals to make it quicker to change. If it’s not secure sometimes it can wiggle
around and become unconnected. It will still be in the race car but unconnected
from the power supply.>>And so now Kyle Larson fighting to stay
in front of Kyle Busch as Kyle Busch tries to stay in front of martin Truex Jr. Matt
Kenseth, Brad less cow ski, and Joey Logano in the top five.>>You’re right. They know this is an opportunity to put the
42 down a second lap. That will be their second goal.>>42 has been fast all year long. You know, he’s won a race. Since that race he’s been a really, really
good competitor, try to track him down and get all you can.>>The 42 is going to have to come back to
pit road. They had too many men over the wall when they
were working on that issue.>>That’s compounding errors, compounding
mistakes. The battery is the biggest issue, but then
when the 42 came to pit road, obviously they had too many guys over pit wall. You said it. When he comes out, he’s going to lose at least
a second lap, maybe a third. It’s going to be a steep steep hill to try
to climb back.>>It will be a pass-through penalty, right? He’ll have to pass down pit road. He doesn’t have to stop but at least pass
through.>>Unfortunate for the 42. 24 point behind the cut-off line for Kyle
Larson currently riding 39th and he doesn’t go into his pit Staal that time or onto pit
road. They show the black flag. They’ll show him the black flag with the white
cross next time.>>They give you a few laps. You take full advantage of the laps because
you might get a caution. Smart job for those guys who stay out as if
long as they can. Look how slow the speed is. 35 miles an hour here. You’re crawling down pit road.>>To have instantly lost the second lap,
he stopped. Kyle Busch.>>Kyle now is driving in turn three. It’s in the middle of three and four. Kyle Larson has got to be careful. He’s going to end up three laps down right
here.>>Three laps down for a chase contender,
hoping not to be eliminated today. But now he has a huge uphill battle in front
of him.>>Now the 42 needs to under where they’re
at in the situation, basically start being very aggressive, trying to take waves by. You’re three laps down. The only way this 42 has a chab of transferring
at the moment unless the other cars have problems is to get toward the lead lap.>>If you’re going to have a problem, you
want it early. You now have 350 laps to recover from this
problem. So their day is not done, but they’re going
to have to catch some caution. They’re going to have to gamble a bit and
have some things go their way if they’re going to move into the round of 12.>>With more on what’s moving, let’s go to
Kevin Harvick.>>A lot going on. Kevin Harvick race dream. You can see all the crew members underneath
the car working. There’s five crew members underneath including
competition director trying to lend a hand as well, trying to weld a repair piece in
there to make sure Kevin Harvick can get back out. What do they need now? They’re locked into the next realm. They’re going to stick it and get Kevin Harvick
back out.>>Currently Kevin Harr Vicks scoring 40th. Two chasers who have problems early at Dover,
one of them with that win guarantees an advancement and he gets into the round of 12.>>And that’s important information. He’s only two point Bess low the cut line
now. So as other people have issues, it’s very
important for these teams, crew chiefs to inform them of the situation. You have to wonder with Kevin Harvick and
his team if they’re not doing a little bit of testing and trying to figure out how far
stuff can move, what can happen to have a problem that early in the race. They have to be doing something a little different. Maybe a little bit of testing going on today.>>Let’s take a look at the NASCAR heat evolution
and the rear end and what those four teams are dealing with right now.>>Yeah. As you heard, the 4 team broke a track bar. There’s the track bar. Sounds like they broke the track bar mount. You see this. That gets welded to the chassis. The left side connects to the suspension. It seems like the left side is still instakt
but the right side broke that’s welded to the chassis. That’s going to be a difficult repair.>>When that breaks, now there’s no control
for the rear axle inside of the body. The rear alks moves left and right.>>A few issues for Terrell chasers. Kyle Busch out front. Modern rhythmic music score windows change

the cut-off line trying to overcome a five-point deficit. He knew he needed to have a vd good performance
today, however, they may have some concerns. . Feels like a wheel, a grinding.>>That report came in about ten laps ago. They’re monitoring it to make sure it doesn’t
get worse. This team obviously paying very close attention
to it, Rick.>>A tough position for Jamie Mcmurray. A week ago they spent most of the race in
the top ten but finished up in the 19th which puts him in the position of being on the cut
line, currently in the 11th spot.>>He got caught on the wrong side of this. Ended up making race the last tires. Now the biggest concern is what is this problem? What is going on? Is it going get worse? That would be unnerving to me, Steve.>>Dave.>>Austin Dillon can take advantage of Jamie
Mcmurray. You see he’s just below the cut line four
lines out. His car very difficult to handle. It won’t turn in the corners and it’s four
of them and they’re hard to get through when you don’t have that turn in your car.>>That’s a really good shot. You can see what Austin Dillon is having to. Do you can see his wheel input. He drives almost with his leg, you can see
when he accelerates, when he decelerates. There’s a lot going on with this racetrack. You have to attack these four entries and
fall down into this hole driving into turn one, try to roll in as quickly as you can,
go back to the throttle. But a lot of times you have to breelgt off
the throttle. Very difficult racetrack.>>We’re at the monster mile. Chewing up some competitors today. The 42, Kyle Busch, his battery came loose. He lost power. Came to pit road to repair. Under that repair, he had a penalty. He comes to pit road. He has no power. They stop to look. You’re allowed six guys over the wall, seven
to service the driver. No one serviced the driver. You see this gentleman on the pate wall. He seems something. He tells them to jack up. When he steps over, that makes seven guys. There’s still a person you don’t see on the
right side of the race car. The battery was an unfortunate situation. Seven guys over pit wall, it’s a silly penalty. They happen. They happen often. Very easy to overcome to three laps down. Going to need some very unique circumstances
to be able to obtain these laps.>>A mental mistake by the team and that puts
Kyle Larson three laps down. The two teammates racing for position, fighting
for the fifth spot. Right now Brad keselowski has the fifth position. Joey Logano trying to take it away from him. Let’s take a look at today’s rams guts and
glory especially when we’re talking about the 42 team.>>Yeah, Rick. It started with a disjointed weekend. There’s been rain in the area, short practices. Teams are going to have to set up. Some hit it. Some haven’t. A situational awareness. You see the 42 is having trouble. These other chasers have to underthe situation
they’re put in.>>That’s right. Understand what you need from this race. Competition, whether they’re having a good
day or bad day can affect what your strategy has to be, how aggressive you can be and also
how aggressive the crew chief needs to be. You have to think that Joey Logano and his
team are feeling pretty good. They ran so poorly early in practice this
weekend. Although they didn’t get a lot of practice,
they struggle. No speed at all. To be able to sit here, that has to give them
a little bit of confidence. The two teams have not gone well.>>Challenging Brad keselowski for the fifth
spot. He’ll take the fifth away from teammate Brad
keselowski. Kelli.>>Ahead of that group, the crew chief telling
us he feels really good about the direction of the race team. He said the cars they brought to the last
two races, Chicago and New Hampshire, he felt like some of the best race cars they ever
had at those tracks but they definitely want the win today. Momentum is important, Rick.>>Yeah. Momentum is very, very big. They had incredible momentum and then bad
finished at chicagoland. The very next race at Loudon. That puts them in a position. As you mentioned, situational awareness. It’s not working out for them yet. Yet a lot of racing in front of them. 324 laps still to go. They see them get by.>>I’ve been watching the 48 of Jimmie Johnson. Consistently one of the top three cars on
the racetrack as far as speed goes. You see them overtake the 20th. Remember, this is a team I think have been
looking forward to get back to this racetrack. A year ago the mechanical failure eliminated. This chase format has not suited him yet. I think they would approve that incorrect. They wanted to advance, continue to advance. If you can get Jimmie Johnson into the round
of eight, three very, very good racetracks, he has to be a favorite to make it to the
final four.>>Steve, if you look at the next five racetracks,
Jimmie Johnson has 30 career wins. They want to get through. He told me earlier this week he said mid-summer
I would have told you we had enough to get through the next round, but I honestly did
not think we could make the championship four. But with the speed we brought with the 48
car and Hendrick motorsports overall in the last couple of weeks, I think we can. As I mentioned very strong. No doubt Jimmie Johnson is going to be a championship
threat if they can get through at Dover where they’ve won ten times, by the way.>>Kyle Busch out in front. He has. Checked out by any stretch of the imagination. Just a half second lead over martin Truex
Jr. Trying to advance to the round
[ Distorted voice ] Progressive claims to show people their competitors’ rates alongside
their direct rate to save you money. But what’s really going on? When played backwards at 1/8th speed you can
clearly hear… What could that mean? Woman: Tom? Tom! They’re just commercials. Or are they? You’re waking the neighbors. Well, mom, maybe the neighbors need to be
woke. I think it’s actually “Awoken.” No, that doesn’t even seem right. No, it’s “Awoken.” Revealing the truth to help you save. Here I am… Building a jet engine. We’ve been hearing so much about how you’re

builds world-changing machines. Machines that can also communicate digitally. Like robots. Did you build that robot? That’s not a robot, that’s my coworker Earl. He builds jet engines with his human hands. What about that robot? That is a vending machine, Ricky. John, give him a dollar.>>>Watch the chase with the NBCSN sports
app. Find out more at nbcsn.com/live. Marty.>>Carl Edwards back there, Rick, with a tight
race car but he says it’s gotten a little bit better. He aid owed the crew and said I think I found
something that makes it work a little bit better. Kyle was running second with 41 to go in June. H goat in a wreck. He told me earlier, I’ve been excited for
this race since we left here in June, Rick.>>Yeah. That’s a situation where Carl Edwards really
tried to have a great run. As we see a battle for the lead heating up. Kyle Busch had a half a second lead over martin
Truex Jr. They pass the lap traffic of Clint bowyer. Marty.>>A moment ago, Rick, he radioed to Kyle
Busch, you’re 0.2 ahead. Let’s save something for the end of the race. I think he’s baking up. A lot of traffic in the race and martin Truex
Jr. In another Toyota trying to catch him for
the lead as well.>>They had a split. All the way around the track. The team of Kyle Busch taking advantage of
the high line that’s come in.>>Remember the 78 already winning, with a
win already advancing to the round of 12. Good job to push Kyle Busch harder than he
wants to be pushed. Push Kyle Busch. Remember, you want to race going to the round
of 12. If you can find a way to get him out who’s
not as good, that’s what you want.>>These two were in the championship four
last year. Last year it was Kyle Busch who won at Miami. He was able to go on and be the 2015 champion
of the sprint cup series. Martin Truex Jr. One of the favorite ones entering the race
this year as he’s been strong on all different tracks it’s been so fun. Kyle Busch all the way up, getting close to
the wall. Push the edge to the rubber. That’s where the rubber on the racetrack is. You don’t want to get above that right now. That’s the mess you don’t want to be in. He’s right against it.>>Dave, what’s going on with the 24 in chase
Elliott?>>22 points to the good right now you see
as they run on the left. They told me this morning they want him to
chase hard. They believe they really take that. They look for his driver to do that. His report back lately is his car iscompression. That’s the condition for the moment for chase
Elliott. As for the 14 of Tony Stewart. He said he was only going to talk to Tony
about the points and where they were going to lie. Listen to the recent radio. [ Indiscernible ]
>>So he’s hearing from his driver, horrible race car, worse ever at Dover. He said, now is the time. I govet to remind my driver, we’re only ten
points out. He’s got to remind his driver, stay in the
game.>>It’s a very long race, a lot of laps in
front of him. Over 305 laps go in this race. Kyle Busch has been out front for 74 of the
96 laps, already completed.>>You talk about how long the
race is, Rick, we’re not even to the quarter mark yet. Three laps way from a quarter of the race
through. Remember, this used to be a 500. Reduced to 400. It’s still a very long afternoon.>>These two battle for the 2004 XFINITY series
championship, and it was actually martin Truex Jr. Who ended up winning the title and Kyle Busch
finishing second in that battle. Marty?>>Well, Rick, Jeff talked earlier how Kyle
Busch had moved up the racetrack. Kind of in the middle right there. He had to do that because of the way his car
was handling. He said it helped the back of the car but
hurt the front of the car. He said when I moved up, there was all kinds
of grip. You have to go where your car likes it. It handles better, not necessarily where the
grip is necessarily.>>That’s right. Right where your car is good. Moving behind these two cars. That blue number 48, he’s coming.>>A ten-time winner — actually Johnson has
won more at Dover than 26 of the other 39 drivers in the field in their career. One smart choice leads to the next. The new 2017 Ford Fusion is here. It’s the beauty of a well-made choice. Here at Outback, the steaks have definitely

he could come onto pit road. Take a look at what happened.>>Obviously right front tire failure. We saw this in the XFINITY race. This is a product of very limited practice
time, not really getting an understanding of where you are in your cambers. You can see your cameras here. It’s very hard on the inside edge of the tire
and the tire will fail. Limited practice. In my opinion limited practice really affecting
what the teams can do about their car.>>The safety barrier doing its job again. You see it compressing as the car hits it,
taking a little bit of the hit away as the cars are making their way onto pit road. Kelli?>>Once again, it fired off a little better
that time. It was definitely more manageable to drive,
although it got a little bit tight. Four tires and fuel for Matt Kenseth. Marty.>>Kyle Busch’s car was a little bit free. When he went down, it didn’t really help it. It needed a turn as well. You’re going see an air pressure touch for
that. And Jimmie Johnson, the pressure was really
good, very fast at the end of the line. No change for the 48. Dave?>>For Joey Logano, it was on the edge of
loose exit. Made an air pressure adjustment, for tires
and sunoco fuel.>>Race off pit road brought to you by Geico. Jimmie Johnson gains a spot, the 78 loses

to pit road to take tires but, Jeff, I think we’re going to start to see shorter runs. Crew chiefs are going to have to decide whether
they get tires on shorter runs.>>That’s going to be difficult. That’s the problem that Kyle Larson had. He’s going to need timing or shorter runs
if he’s going to stay out and get wave-arounds. That’s gonl to be his only opportunity to
get these laps.>>McDonald’s serving breakfast all day with

race. Earlier he was tight. He did not have the speed. Later in the run that really helped him. They’re going to see if they made a change
for that or keep that as an advantage. We’re going to find out with Jimmie Johnson
starting on the outside.>>If you remember the last time he started
on the outside, he actually missed a shift and martin Truex Jr. Was right behind him, bottled up and had a
big accident on the restart. Anything can happen.>>He did. He had a transmission issue and couldn’t get
it out. Was it a 16-car pileup or 18-car pileup?>>Yeah. A 16-car pileup. Not a lot of people expected that. Kyle Busch chiess the inside lane as we restart. Green flag in the air.>>Watch the concrete. It gets very light after the caution because
the warm tires pick it up off the track but it will be put back down very quickly.>>Kyle Busch was rock tong restart, already
has a seven-or eight-car lead on Jimmie Johnson who was on the outside of it.>>Martin Truex Jr. Has moved up into the second spot. Joey Logano running fourth. Denny Hamlin running in the top five. Behind him, Matt Kenseth in the Dewalt, number
20. He makes fighting for position between Kenny
and Hamlin. All four of Joe Gibbs racing cars in the chase
as well as the alliance team of martin Truex Jr. Austin Dillon. In the three is the first driver outside the
top 12, and it’s three points. That’s three positions on the racetrack. If Austin Dillon can gain those three positions,
he would then be tied with the 1 of Jamie Mcmurray.>>You saw him get through the corner, fighting
it better than Carl Edwards in the turn. Looks like a pretty good run off turn four.>>Some really good views. This is where he’s been fast right here. He’s able to really gain on Carl Edward but
then he just can’t get the car turned. He can’t get it to turn. Carl Edwards has given up a little bit of
speed. Right there he gains but then as they start
on the exit, there’s nowhere for Austin Dillon to go.>>He’s driving like a veteran in front of
him. He knows the 3 is better than him through
the corner. That’s why he makes sure he exits right here,
right along the apron of the racetrack. Does not get out on bottom.>>Behind the three team is the 41 of curt
bub, Marty.>>Right now in the 14th position, right where
he needs to be. That’s what he told me early this week. He said, listen, we’re not coming here to
be aggressive this weekend. All we need is the top ten. We just want to advance. That’s going to be a round of strength. He told Tony Gipson, the changes we just made,
not working so far. Earlier on he was way too loose on entry,
on exit. This last run, way too tight. They’re trying to get the balance on the 41. Still right where they want to be.>>The problem, Rick, is I understand what
the 41 is saying. Easier said than done. Only 13 points ahead of the cut line. You know, there are 26 cars within a lap of
the leader. There are over 30 cars with two laps of a
leader. With 282 to go, there’s no guarantees. Kyle Busch could have a solid race and have
an issue on the restart and miss the chase.>>Also with this 41 car, we just have to
look at the speed. They were really fast in the spring and in
the summer. Ran really well, but finished fifth in New
Hampshire.>>The car just in front of the 41 of Kurt
Busch as the 88 of Jeff Gordon subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Kelli?>>There’s a sight to see. It’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. Sitting above the pit box of the 88. I asked the crew what it was like to have
Dale back at the track. They say it’s pretty neat. He gets a different perspective of how the
team runs and he can give us perspective. He’s been listening. They had a discussion about any changes they
made. He said when Dale comes, he can help us out. Qualifies, how I work with engineers. We can start fine tuning things this year
so we can come out of the box next year when he gets back behind the wheel next season.>>I think those experiences. I know when I would go, you would learn things. You have no idea the amount of communication. If you can understand their job a little better,
I think Yo can help them do their job a little better. Give them better information, quicker information,
smatter information. Use in opportunity to be better as a race
team. It’s a really, really good idea.>>It’s a pretty small chance I’m going join
you in the race car. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Said earlier this week

in the last run, Rick. He caught it deep, it has an air ficitdeficit. Kyle Busch is the man he took the lead from
when we started the this green flag run. He started up at front. But take a listen.>>I need help. [ Indiscernible ]
>>Jeff, it would seem with two corners, there would only be one apex. Help us understand why there’s two apexes
at Dover.>>Apex would be the center where the car
needs to turn. At this racetrack the corners are so long
and so wide, there are two apexes. You enter the corner, drive in it. I don’t think you turn straight but you don’t
turn as hard as you normally would. Right here it’s the beginning of the apex. That’s the first turn. Then you go straight and the second mark is
where you turn the car again. So in both case YOS view to have the car poibled
in the direction you need to point it in and get enough of a grip.>>Let’s right along. He gets to the apron right about there. You see he kind of comes up. Then he goes down right there. The second APEC. Two corners within one. As you say, you go to Charlotte or other big
one, you get in and run the white line and leave. Here at Dover there really are two corners.>>Imagine a long ramp. You get off the interstate. It goes forever. You’re constantly turning but then you have
to turn again as you approach the interstate. It’s very, very similar to that.>>I will tell Kyle Busch that him and 40
other cars do not like how you turn at the second apex. That’s the challenge. If you can get into the corner, the question
is can you turn back down the hill.>>A lot of guys talk about that. He drives in, up the banking, and downher.>>If you notice, he’s not giving up. He says, hey, it is what it is. He’s searching. We saw him on the top of the racetrack. Now he’s at the very bomb. That’s what the racetrack allows you to do. It changes around. In making that adjustment he’s found speed. He’s started to break even with the 478.>>So that’s a lot of talk about the guys
who are running up in the first three positions. How about the guy running back in 12th, Dave?>>He’s been working on the guy. Austin Dillon has been told by the spotter,
keep working that exit because that’s where you’re almost meeting the 19 car of Carl Edwards. Most of the day it’s been a tight race car
for Austin Dillon. What about the pressure of the chase. You see on the left, he’s still the first
man out, only three points behind. When I talked to his crew chief, he said,
I went to bed at 11:30. I was wide awake at 1:30 and could never go
back to sleep. So much pressure for the crew chief, so much
on his mind.>>There’s so much for everyone involved. The pressure ramps up. This is an elimination race. He could leave this chase race and not have
that same chance.>>Most of these guys in the Ford grew up
wanting to be in this race. It is an opportunity of a lifetime. They’ve worked so hard to do it. When it’s right in front of you, it’s all
you can think about. You can’t get away from it.>>Mike.>>Rick, perhaps the Cinderella story of this
year is the 34 car of Kurt Buscher, going the victory at pocono and making their way
and qualifying for the chase. They had hoped to play spoil never the advance
beyond the round of 16. Although they came in today, he’s been the
hole. BOB thought they might be able to use brakes
and get strategy to get to the front. Unfortunately as the race has played out so
far, they’ve not found the speed. Their chance of getting to victory lane and
pulling off a hail Mary, it may not happen. Maybe, maybe, just like in pocono, something
may happen that allows them to play a strategy move.>>They utilized the weather situation and
came onto pit rode a little bit earlier. When they stayed out, they ended up getting
lead and then all of a sudden the ball rolled at poconos.>>A body slam move. Now he’s got to run him down at the straightaway
and let him know his displeasure. Not the kind of racetrack you want to be rubbing
fenders.>>What I was saying, there’s a lot of experience. They had a lot of experience with Carl Edwards. They made the chase race together. What an impressive year. Didn’t get a ride on Roush. Showdown up each and every work. He did the best he could and run that race. You can see it here. He took it. I wonder what Kevin Harvick is thinking behind
him three or four laps down. Listen, guys, I don’t want any part of this. I’ve already had a bad day. I don’t need it to be worse. Again, Kevin Harvick, his view. He will advance to the round of 12.>>He says, I don’t want to be part of this. He’s probably laughing. While it’s funny, only because he had to have
a win.>>If you ever wanted to know the value of
a win, wait to talk to Kevin Harvick after today’s race. So important that they had the win from a
week ago. Kevin Harvick has never finished last in his
567 career starts. He won’t be last in this one. Ryan Blaney is already off the track, so he’s
catching him already. This is me, using a wrench to build a jet

partners at smithfield food as we look down on the monster mile. Out front, martin Truex Jr., Joey Logano running
in the third position. He’s behind Jimmie Johnson. So it’s Toyota, Chevy, and Ford, the top three. Jamie Mcmurray and Austin Dillon separated
by one point in the chase running. And currently it’s Austin Dillon that has
the advantage. Mike?>>And, Rick, those two have been swapping
that transfer spot throughout the course of this race and right now Austin Dillon has
the advantage. As for Jamie Mcmurray, he had radioed earlier
in the race that he had a vibration. Here’s the earliest thing he had to say about
it.>>Some type of weird drive thing, vibration,
maybe the drive shaft. But that’s not it.>>So with only 159 laps complete, still lots
of racing remaining and lots of concern as it relates to that vie brarks Dave.>>I talked about it. He said it was running niechlts then they
came here this weekend a little bit different setup-wise but that their teammates used what
they had in the spring and that was working for them. So Saturday they swapped back over to that. They felt it was going to be the right jipt
for today. Lately they made changes to the car and he’s
found it going the three. Nk that’s as much of a concern. He’s moved up the racetrack. Right now he’s passing on the bottom. He’s moved up the racetrack and when he did,
he found a way around Edwards. He has one of the top three or four fastest
cars on the racetrack right now.>>Rick, we talk about anyone can be eliminated
with a mistake, but they about how emotionally draining this must be for Austin Dillon and
Jamie Mcmillan. 3 1/2, four.>>Lose a couple spots could be a difference
from your year.>>Jamie Mcmurray felt those very emotion
as year ago when he made it into the chase, got to this elimination race and actually
was tied in points. He had the tiebreaker as far as being able
to advance and so he was eliminated after the race last year. Once again he’s in a position. It’s a single point right now that he’s behind
the three team.>>Let’s think about chip ganassi racing. We talk about it all week how well he runs
here. They have an issue. They’re 16 points below. The other hope for chip ganassi training.>>We’ll see if he can make some ground at the bottom.>>That was nicely done, not entering the
bottom. He does the same thing down here. Can he stay even the 24?>>What’s so difficult, you’re running the
top. You’re not sure. You don’t have a reference anymore. The last time you were on the bottom was a
long time ago.>>He’s faster than the cars in front of him. He’s running them down.>>Mike.>>It’s all right.>>.
>>And joust heard the radio guys from inside the race car, Jamie Mcmurray talk about that
vibration a few timing during the race. You feel like maybe the motor is expiring.>>It sounded down, the sill Ders. Keeps up right here. The middle of the corner. The 23 easily passes them. This one definitely has a power irv.>>Once again it looks as though Jamie Mcmurray
is looking at heartbreak. As far as advancing out of the first round
of the chase, he’s 11 miles an hour slower than martin Truex jr.’s last lap time.>>It’s hard to believe that chganassi raining
has done that it’s made the first 26 races truly the regular race. And then the ee Lakers excitement, you could
win a championship but only three races later you come to Dover and you have to continue
those hopes. We can see instantly how difficult it is.>>Kyle Larson, an elrical issue. He’s three laps down running 30th. Martin Truex Jr. Back out front again. Sfx: Door rattles

of the 14, Tony Stewart. Although it looks dark for them 13 down, pretty
soon one will fall back and he’ll be the first car below the front line. What that means is if any of the cars in front
of him have a mechanical issue, we’ve seen that, Tony Stewart could be the next guy to

so important not to have mechanical issues and what winning does. If you win, it moves you along.>>The 42 of Kyle Larson is fast enough. He’s as fast as the 2 or the 24. You see the 1 on the left of your screen just
off the pace. We just need to get some timely cautions if
the 42 hopes to get back on the lead left.>>Right now all ten drivers in the top ten
are chase drivers. Jeff Gordon. Kurt Busch. The
last chaser on the lead lap is 14th. Then you’ve got Jamie Mcmurray, Chris Buescher,
Kyle Larson, and Kevin Harvick all laps down. Mike.>>Looks as though the caution has come out
for the 42. As quickly as the 42 was running around the
racetrack even though he was four laps Dow.>>Did you blow a tire?>>Yep.>>You heard there, did you blow a tire. The quick response, “Yep. ” running the high
line. I would say that’s a good thing. He was closer to the wall.>>At that point, there’s nothing you can
do. You hope you don’t hit it too hard. We talked about how hard this racetrack is
on tires. It just adds to the problem.>>A free pass will go to the 16 of Greg Biffle
as the 42 team will once again go to work. On that car. It has been one thing after another for Kyle
Larson and this team. He had an electrical issue. Then penalized for too many men over the wall. Allowed six. He had seven. Then a right side tire going down when they
were multiple laps. Hitting the wall and bringing the caution
out. The one behind him, the 1 of Jamie Mcmurray. They’re going to get under the hood and see
if there’s anything they can look at.>>Right now Jamie Mcmurray is only one lap
down. We saw it earlier. That were prepared to repair it.>>They were having a long discussion with
Hendrick motorsports, Scott maxim trying to diagnose what might be going on with that
race car. Jamie said they were down one cylinder and
thought they might be going down another. They’re looking at the electrical system to
see if there’s anything there that might be able to be corrected that might prevent them
from falling back.>>They had a gun. They were checking the cylinders?>>Yeah. So basically the one run — that’s why the
hedger teams were there. They checked the temperatures of the cylinder. Whichever cylinder is not firing should be
cooler. Marty.>>Kyle Busch said they went way too far on
the last adjustment and made it extremely tough for him. Not being happy. They’re going to see them undo the last adjustment
which is a west adjustment. For Jimmie Johnson he’s done better. The track bar adjustment was helping but I
need a little bit more. So you’re going to see a wedge and air pressure
jaunt.>>The third-place runner Joey Logano will
have it put on with a little different air pressure to help him turn better in traffic. That was his only major complaint during that
run. He gets sunoco and he’s down and out of here.>>The race down pit road. Even holding their position in the top five. My brother and I have always been rivals. We would dream about racing each other, in

at Dover international speedway. A caution comes out. Even the spotters get a little bit of a break. The one team, I don’t know if they can worry
any less, but they’ve had an issue already. I’ve got to have something wrong.>>You can’t see.>>No, sir. I’m going to go to the garage? The only reason you go to the garage is if
you want to try to fix it so it doesn’t completely blow up that. Would be the strategy.>>Others have issues later in the race.>>Still trying to to go. The green flag comes out again. On the outside, Jimmie Johnson. A little contact as they enter turn one.>>That was a contested restart. They leave the restart zone.>>And Jimmie Johnson out front.>>New leader, 48.>>>>Familiar sights of the fans here at
Dover. Ten times as Jimmie Johnson ends up winning
this race. Six-time champion still looking to join very
elite company of seven championships. Only Dale Earnhardt and Richard petty have
been able to win seven championships in their careers. It is Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Brad keselowski,
Marty.>>>>Rick, Jimmie Johnson now in the lead. They have truck early. It’s too tight for Jimmie. When the air pressure has come up, that’s
when the clean air will certainly help the 48. I was talking to Jimmie earlier this week. He said when there’s a down turn in racinging,
you don’t know where to start because the 1 car right now, Rick, problems on the racetrack.>>Yeah. They expected it. It blew up out of turn number four and left
smoke all the way across the front of the grand stands and probably some fluid along
the track up top. So this will be a pretty extensive cleanup
for. The one team’s engine does let go and once
again Jamie Mcmurray will not advance out of the first round, the round of 16 in just
his second year of making the chase.>>You know the disappointment is so big for
this racing team. They had such a solid year. Not a great year to put themselves in position. They talk about maybe going to the garage
to fix it. They didn’t do it. So eventually it erupted. A terminal problem right now. The problem with going to the garage and fixing
it, how do you fix it. You don’t have a machine shop with you. There’s only so many thing use can do. Maybe taking the rocker arms off of the cylinder,
that’s about the only thing you can do. You can see the smoke coming out of the pipes.>>From underneath that car. So unfortunate that Jamie Mcmurray in just
his second chase has once again at Dover ended his title hopes.>>It’s been a rough day for all of chip ganassi
racing.>>Still an opportunity for Kyle Larson. With Jamie Mcmurray, you know that that opportunity
is gone. Kyle Larson, four laps down. It’s definitely an uphill battle. You can’t write him off just yet. He still has an opportunity to play some strategy
games to see if he can get a lap or two or four to get back on the lead lap.>>If people have trouble, he could be right
there. Obviously Chris Buescher has a lot of points. He’s a lot of points behind. With a few more problems, he counseled fight
his way in. But it good evening be an uphill battle.>>Pit road is open. That means we’ll see quite a few make their
way onto pit road. Although, the last time we saw everyone on
pit road was 184. So with only ten lap, how far back will they
start coming?>>I expect most will stay out. You’ve got to look back. Maybe Kurt Busch, Jeff Gordon.>>We had a decent day.>>Kasey kahne, 11th, the first car to come
onto pit road some of the top ten stays out. And then behind them kahne, almirola, Kurt
Busch, all of them coming to pit road. Marty?>>He said the car was way tight. He came in running 14. He said I’ve about got to find fresh concrete
to get some grip. Trying to free up that car that they’ve about
been trying to free up for the laugh couple of stops. They slaps a piece of tape on the front grill
as well.>>Jamie Mcmurray trying to win a championship

Johnson has enjoyed riding on two wheels. As a matter of fact, raced on two wheels before
he ever thought about getting behind the wheel of a stock car. That’s why he says he compares Dover to racing
in motocross because you drop down into the turns here at Dover. Maybe that’s some of the success that he has
had here, relating to his youth and driving those motorcycles as he was growing up. Most wins at a single track. Look at the names here. Richard petty, Darrell Waltrip, and Dale Earnhardt. Jimmie Johnson joining that group. Right now he has ten wins already at Dover. And out in front looking for his 11th. Lights are off on the pace car once again. Jimmie Johnson has chosen the outside line. Martin Truex Jr. On the inside. Kyle Busch and Brad keselowski making up row
two. Row three, Kenseth and Logano.>>Last year, a big run on the outside. Jimmie Johnson really good restart.>>Brad keselowski moves into second. Trying to hang onto that is martin Truex Jr. Looking inside early in this run. Keselowski back up the racetrack. A little bobble and the 78 is going to complete
the pass.>>He can drive his race car differently. He has nothing to lose. He can push. If he makes a mistake, no big deal. That I have to be a little bit smarter on
how they drive.>>Kyle Busch looks to the inside. Kyle Busch, number 18. Matt Kenseth in the 20. Chase Elliott, Joey Logano just behind him,
24 and 22. Sideways there for chase Elliott as he came
off the turn. Mike.>>Rick, Jamie Mcmurray had just gotten out
of his race car. He had reported several times he had felt
the vibration. Any explanation for why it let go?>>No. Earlier I said I had issues. That’s what it felt like. And then it went away oddly enough. But then it started vie bragt again. A few minutes later it finally broke.>>I know there were high hopes coming into
this race of advancing beyond this round. It would appear now that it’s over. Give me your perspective on the situation.>>I had a good credit one, thanks, Chevy. It’s unfortunate to both the 42 and the 1
that had a problem but it is what it is. That’s why we race. I’m proud of my team, proud of our guys. All the hard work we put in. It stinks that it’s over this way, but we
get to race next week. We’ll come back and try to do it again.>>Thank you.>>Thank you.>>He still has a good attitude despite his
championship hopes being over with.>>The one thing you can look to when you
look at Jamie Mcmurray, he’s won the biggest races in this sport. He’s not won the championship but he’s won
the marquis races in stock car racing.>>Such a good attitude. Jamie puts his head down and goes to work. Remember, he and his crew chief are fairly
new in their relationship. They made big strides this year. They can take a lot of pride in that. They’ve got to find a way to continue to improve,
but that team has gotten better, and I think it will continue to get better.>>Let’s listen in to the 14 radio just moments
ago. This is what they had to say.>>I’m going to give you an update right now. Eight points behind Austin there in front
of you.>>And it’s down to five now because Austin
is behind him.>>Sometimes that’s all somebody like Tony
Stewart needs. They talk about it. How he’s had success. He’s won championships in the sprint cup series. In his final subpoena, that’s all he need
was a glimmer of hope. A little light at the end of the tunnel. The 14 car to go out and attack and try to
attack.>>He’s going get a challenge back from young
Austin Dillon. But it was very loose at the start of that
race — or the start of that last run. He said the air pressure change might have
been too much. He said, you’ll thank me at the end of the
laps. And he agrees. We’ll see if he comes back to Tony’s liking
and he can battle back to his position.>>His teammate goes around him as well. He’s got to keep fighting, try to find a way
to make his car a little bit better. There’s a battle for third.>>The 18 of Kyle Busch gets in back of keselowski.>>Brad drops back to fourth. Just 192 laps to go. Now 191. As far as laps in this elimination race. The bottom four at the end of this race. The top 16 point standings will not advance
into the round of 12. Their championship hopes dashed.>>And, Rick, the other 12, they’ll all be
reset. Back to square one and they’ll continue to
rate all tied in points.>>We talked about it several times based
on where he was. We saw him drive up to sixth place. He pitted. They lost a spot on pit road. Did not do very well on the restart. I don’t know if his car isn’t good on the
short run. But this transaction got him back up. He passed Tony Stewart to get to the spot
he’s in. They’ve got to find a short run speed if they
want to keep the track position they’ve earned.>>Guys, I was looking at the restart. What happened with Austin. They didn’t make any changes. They changed four tires but they really doesn’t
just it at all. He was happy at the end. A little bit hard to handle at the initial
restart.>>I want to listen in to the radio for Austin
Dillon moments ago. This is what they had to say.>>Guys, on the restart, we’ll get it back
here.>>10/4, no worries, all good.>>The only one is at 14. The field.>>Yeah, I know it. I know it. He’s not very fast.>>Yeah, I know. It will take care of itself.>>He did a good job right there.>>They put points there. The teams are paying attention to it too. That’s what they’re talking about it. You heard Tony Stewart’s team talk about it
and Austin Dillon team’s talk about it. They’re paying attention to where they are
and where they’re running. We understand the race isn’t over right now. It’s exceptionally important. You hear how important it is. The teams are talking about it. That’s all that matters, Steve. How are you compared to your competition?>>That’s it. This is a points battle? The whole idea is to have enough points to
transfer into the next round.>>Three drivers have an opportunity to advance
using wins, and the remaining nine will have to use points to advance into the round of
12. We see Austin Dillon working that high line
trying to go by Carl Edwards on the outside.>>Here he comes. It just doesn’t go well. You heard him say, hey, sorry about that restart,
which tells me he didn’t do a good job of the restart. He gave up a spot. Maybe the car wasn’t as bad. He didn’t make the right move at the right
time. It’s amazing at the restart how that can turn
into number 4. It comes at you at such a high rate of speed. That’s why we talk about restarts and how
important they are. You’ve got to be aggressive and effective
in them.>>Aggressively running at the monster mile. The 48 of Jimmie Johnson out front. I got the discounts that you need

A year earlier Jamie Mcmurray came in fourth. That’s not enough to stave off elimination.
Today he has to overcome a deficit and clip the crossover line. Anything short of a victory,
nothing is guaranteed.>>They gave him two pieces of advice. Number

>>Hey, Brad, it’s Jeff up in the booth. Are you with us?
>>Yes, sir. How are you doing?>>I’m doing great. How does that affect you
going into this race?>>Well, that’s a good question. Of course,
you’d like to have more info. We did run. I thought we had some a great ones. They worked
really hard to give us a fast Ford to unload. I thought we were way better this time around
than we were in the last race, so I’m pretty encouraged and feel good about it.>>How does your team approach this race?
What does that mean to you going into today’s race?
>>It’s good feeling. You can’t take anything for granted in this sport. Unless you’re locked
in, you ee got to make sure you get the most of it each and every day. Something could
jump up and bite you. It seems to be good. That will all take care of itself.
>>Good luck to you and your team. Have fun today.
>>Thanks, Jeff. Have a good one up in the booth.
>>And we’re going ride along with a few different drivers other than bran keselowski. One of
those being the 88 of Jeff Gordon with the nationwide camera. He’ll start 18. Austin
Dillon with the aaa onboard camera starts 14th. Jamie Mcmurray has the credit one onboard
camera and will start in row 7 in the 13th position. Kevin Harvick and the number 4 starts
in row 3 in the sixth spot. Kyle Busch has the sprint onboard camera and will start in
row 2 in the third position. And we just heard from him. Starting up front on the pole with
the Ford incar camera is Brad keselowski. Not only will we ride along with a few different
cars on the racetrack, but also the aerial coverage provided by smithfield foods. I want
to take a closer look at Dover speedway. 400 laps, 400 miles, pit road speed. They will
have to slow all the way down to 35 miles an hour when they get to that line right there.
A and the fuel window, 85 to 90 laps today, Steve.
>>Yeah. That fuel window will definitely be tested. It seems here at monster mile as
chaotic as the race is, there will be long stretches where they’ll try to straech their
sunoco fuel.>>Let’s take a look at this week’s drive
to the championship. Two advancing to the round of 1 the, martin Truex and Kevin Harvick.
Even Brad keselowski said you can’t count on anything at the monster mile because it
can come up and grab you.>>We’ve seen so much. Wrecks getting onto
pit road. This track has a lot of challenges. One thing going on today, the track has more
rubber on it right now than at any point during the whole weekend they had practice. We’ll
see who can get in early and stay in the race.>>Let’s listen in on communications from
the 14 team a few minutes ago.>>We’ll take whatever it gives us at the
end. I’ll tell you one thing, this race is not going to define the season this team’s
had.>>They’ve had a great one. They were able
to get a win earlier this year which put them into the chase. In Tony Stewart’s final sprint
cup series season. Two by two they come down the back straight and into turns three and
four as we’re awaiting the green flag. Brad keselowski has chosen the inside line. Martin
Truex Jr. On the outside line. Those in the chase all have yellow splirts, yellow spoilers
and yellow banners across the windshield as they come out of turn number 4. The elimination
race is under way from the monster mile.>>Brad keselowski is off to a good start,
Rick. We have all 16 chasers starting right up in the front eight rows.
>>Just a few hours ago, that outside line is going to be ready to go. You see Kevin Harvick on the outside lane.
I think you can trust it. I think you can go up there and expect there’s going to be
a lot of gristle.>>Sorting out positions early in this run.
Denny Hamlin on the inside of the 48 of Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie Johnson, a ten-time winner
at Dover. Again, this is the race where he was eliminated a year ago from chase contention.
>>That elimination, Rick, last year, people over 15, 16, 18 points, they had a little
bit of kamness about them thinking they were good. But after seeing Jimmie Johnson’s mechanical
issue, the nerves in the garage seem to be turned up even more this year.
>>Brad keselowski now has a mirror full of martin Truex Jr. The 78 team still successful
early on in this year. Kept that consistent throughout the year and then won the first
race of the chase in chicagoland and now battling for the lead with Brad keselowski. Early laps
of this race.>>Just no surprise that all of a sudden you’re
executing with a lot of pace early in the race. Everywhere they go, every kind of racetrack,
they have speed. It won’t surprise me one bit to see them go by. I think he’s a little
bit quicker. Put the pressure on right now.>>And it might happen sooner than later as
he looks to the inside and martin Truex Jr. To the point at Dover.
>>And Brad, you saw him put his hand out the window on lap 6. Is not going to go in
there side by side with a car that’s a little faster than him. He cannot afford that. Clean.
That will be enough to advance around number 12.
>>You would think they would take it easy. A lot of people in the media gave him grief
for how hard he ran his teammate. He said, hey, listen, I’ve only one six races
in my careen. If I get a chance to win the race, I’m going to go for it. Nebraska time
he gets a chance to win a race and run up front, he’s certainly going to do it. Kevin
Harvick with a nice pass.>>Freaky pass number four. Kevin Harvick
makes a pass on the 20, Matt Kenseth, he moves up a spot. Mike?
>>As we document the race for the championship, Rick, we’ve got to remember, this is more
than just a driver and a crew chief. The team member shares a part in this. That’s especially
true for the front tire changer. Kinkaid on Mcmurray’s team, he’s one of five members
of his family who works in this sport. He has two brothers and his father. His mother
used to work in an administrative role for Jeff Gordon. The caveat, none of thecaids
have won.>>Eight points out of the transfer spot.
The top 12 advance at the end of this race.>>You know, show what the one is up against.
Eight points out but running into 13th position. Remember last year ran fourthnd a it wasn’t
enough. This is the type of racing we’re going to see all day long to try to move forward.
You’re going have to be up in the first, second, third position.
>>As a driver, what are you feeling out here now, Jeff. You’ve gone ten laps. What kind
of information are you collecting that you can tell your crew chief.
>>As I ride along with Jamie Mcmurray, what you hear with throttle and see, all of those
things are very important. Listen to how he’s going in throttle and watch the wheel input.
>>Battle for second taking place. Here comes Kyle Busch looking to the inside of Brad keselowski.
He moves up. Second goes to Kyle Busch.>>Kyle is one of those teams that on Friday
they worked exclusively on racing. They never went and made a qualifying run, never practiced
qualifying. Of course, qualifying got rained out. With all the teams on the racetrack today,
that 18 car, they have more laps on the racetrack than anyone else.
>>You heard Marty mention for martin Truex Jr., if he has an opportunity to win a race,
he’s going to take advantage of it because he only has six career wins in the sprint
cup series. Three of those have come this year. Although this is the sixth straight
race that has been LED by martin Truex Jr., and that’s the longest ever streak for martin
Truex Jr. As far as leading races as Jimmie Mcmurray continues to close the gap between
him and Jamie Mcmurray.>>He’s looking for him to make a mistake,
find a weak point. Right now we don’t see him in the bottom of the track. This is the
opportunity right here. Jamie is going to keep pushing that, try to get alongside him.
As he turns, he watches him. He’s thinking, can I roll the middle, carry enough. The difficulty
is once you get there, you have to pinch your car off, turn it more than the guy on the
outside. It makes it hard. So the one is a little quicker than the 41, but because the
outside groove is good, it’s going to be a difficult pass. He’s alongside of him and
now I think he’ll drive away from Kurt Busch.>>And right behind the 41 now is the 3 of
Austin Dillon. Austin Dillon, one of those drivers outside the top 12 trying to get in
to advance his championship hopes. Martin Truex Jr. Out front once again at dover.today

happened?>>He took a look outside. You see how he
was able to get turned throttle and get past the 78. We talked about it earlier. This outside
race, they come in. Only at lap 25 and they’re already way up the racetrack.
>>And, Jeff, that’s the key for the 18. They asked him to move up the lane, and he did
it. He was able to take off. Gets the lead and goes back to the bottom of the racetrack.
How did you spend your day? Kyle Busch spent the day at the white house with president
Obama. He said, I thought it was so cool that he asked what I do before the race and also
about my son. Very cool for the team as they were recognized by the white house for their
championship. Kyle Busch right now in the lead for the championship at Dover. We’re
just 96 miles away from the white house here at Dover international speedway. 48 of Jimmie

>>Okay.>>That was spotter coverage presented by
liberty mutual insurance, helping drivers worry less.
>>That’s basically a conversation between Earl and Jimmie Johnson’s spotter Chad Knaus.
Probably on a different channel, couldn’t hear that. He wanted to suggest it. Chad Knaus
wanted to know where they’re running. He wants to stay on the bottom. He’s like stay in the
black and try to conserve the front right tire.
>>I think that eat important. It’s a little harder on tires.>>A lot of rubber put down on the racetrack.
Most wins all-time at Dover presented by sprint goes to Jimmie Johnson. Ten wins already.
He could be adding to that later today and throughout his career. Sprint’s reliability
is better. Visit sprint.com/network today. Currently Jimmie Johnson in that 48 running
in the seventh spot. Just behind a pretty good battle here for position between Kenseth
and Logano and then also Jamie Mcmurray and also Austin Dillon. Dillon able to get by
the one of Mcmurray. Austin Dillon who’s behind Jamie Mcmurray and was behind him in the points.
Because of that pass, that puts Austin Dillon one point in front of Jamie Mcmurray and they
continue to fight out of the 13th and 14th positions.

Harvick will advance. Kyle Larson has an issue. He doesn’t have a win. He’s fighting to get
into the top 12. Mike.>>He’s on pit row trying to determine what’s
causing the loss of power. Thaw were about to change the battery. He said, I’ve got power
back. It may have been a loose plug. Obviously a costly period of time early in this race
for Kyle Larson.>>He’s currently one lap down, Rick. So if
he can get out in front of the leaders and stay in front of them, he’ll only be one lap
down.>>He doesn’t want to speed on pit road. He
gets off. Hopefully he didn’t speed. Green flag back in the air. Kyle Busch, martin Truex,
Brad keselowski going up high, loses second.
It will still be in the race car but unconnected from the
power supply.>>And so now Kyle Larson fighting to stay
in front of Kyle Busch as Kyle Busch tries to stay in front of martin Truex Jr. Matt
Kenseth, Brad less cow ski, and Joey Logano in the top five.
>>You’re right. They know this is an opportunity to put the 42 down a second lap. That will
be their second goal.>>42 has been fast all year long. You know,
he’s won a race. Since that race he’s been a really, really good competitor, try to track
him down and get all you can.>>The 42 is going to have to come back to
pit road. They had too many men over the wall when they were working on that issue.
>>That’s compounding errors, compounding mistakes. The battery is the biggest issue,
but then when the 42 came to pit road, obviously they had too many guys over pit wall. You
said it. When he comes out, he’s going to lose at least a second lap, maybe a third.
It’s going to be a steep steep hill to try to climb back.
>>It will be a pass-through penalty, right? He’ll have to pass down pit road. He doesn’t
have to stop but at least pass through.>>Unfortunate for the 42. 24 point behind
the cut-off line for Kyle Larson currently riding 39th and he doesn’t go into his pit
Staal that time or onto pit road. They show the black flag. They’ll show him the black
flag with the white cross next time.>>They give you a few laps. You take full
advantage of the laps because you might get a caution. Smart job for those guys who stay
out as if long as they can. Look how slow the speed is. 35 miles an hour
here. You’re crawling down pit road.>>To have instantly lost the second lap,
he stopped. Kyle Busch.>>Kyle now is driving in turn three. It’s
in the middle of three and four. Kyle Larson has got to be careful. He’s going to end up
three laps down right here.>>Three laps down for a chase contender,
hoping not to be eliminated today. But now he has a huge uphill battle in front of him.
>>Now the 42 needs to under where they’re at in the situation, basically start being
very aggressive, trying to take waves by. You’re three laps down. The only way this
42 has a chab of transferring at the moment unless the other cars have problems is to
get toward the lead lap.>>If you’re going to have a problem, you
want it early. You now have 350 laps to recover from this problem. So their day is not done,
but they’re going to have to catch some caution. They’re going to have to gamble a bit and
have some things go their way if they’re going to move into the round of 12.
>>With more on what’s moving, let’s go to Kevin Harvick.
>>A lot going on. Kevin Harvick race dream. You can see all the crew members underneath
the car working. There’s five crew members underneath including competition director
trying to lend a hand as well, trying to weld a repair piece in there to make sure Kevin
Harvick can get back out. What do they need now? They’re locked into the next realm. They’re
going to stick it and get Kevin Harvick back out.
>>Currently Kevin Harr Vicks scoring 40th. Two chasers who have problems early at Dover,
one of them with that win guarantees an advancement and he gets into the round of 12.>>And that’s important information. He’s
only two point Bess low the cut line now. So as other people have issues, it’s very
important for these teams, crew chiefs to inform them of the situation. You have to
wonder with Kevin Harvick and his team if they’re not doing a little bit of testing
and trying to figure out how far stuff can move, what can happen to have a problem that
early in the race. They have to be doing something a little different. Maybe a little bit of
testing going on today.>>Let’s take a look at the NASCAR heat evolution
and the rear end and what those four teams are dealing with right now.
>>Yeah. As you heard, the 4 team broke a track bar. There’s the track bar. Sounds like
they broke the track bar mount. You see this. That gets welded to the chassis. The left
side connects to the suspension. It seems like the left side is still instakt but the
right side broke that’s welded to the chassis. That’s going to be a difficult repair.
>>When that breaks, now there’s no control for the rear axle inside of the body. The
rear alks moves left and right.>>A few issues for Terrell chasers. Kyle

Citizen soldier 400 at Dover speedway. Mike?>>Jamie Mcmurray came into the event below
the cut-off line trying to overcome a five-point deficit. He knew he needed to have a vd good
performance today, however, they may have some concerns. . Feels like a wheel, a grinding.
>>That report came in about ten laps ago. They’re monitoring it to make sure it doesn’t
get worse. This team obviously paying very close attention to it, Rick.
>>A tough position for Jamie Mcmurray. A week ago they spent most of the race in the
top ten but finished up in the 19th which puts him in the position of being on the cut
line, currently in the 11th spot.>>He got caught on the wrong side of this.
Ended up making race the last tires. Now the biggest concern is what is this problem? What
is going on? Is it going get worse? That would be unnerving to me, Steve.
>>Dave.>>Austin Dillon can take advantage of Jamie
Mcmurray. You see he’s just below the cut line four lines out. His car very difficult
to handle. It won’t turn in the corners and it’s four of them and they’re hard to get
through when you don’t have that turn in your car.
>>That’s a really good shot. You can see what Austin Dillon is having to. Do you can
see his wheel input. He drives almost with his leg, you can see when he accelerates,
when he decelerates. There’s a lot going on with this racetrack.
You have to attack these four entries and fall down into this hole driving into turn
one, try to roll in as quickly as you can, go back to the throttle. But a lot of times
you have to breelgt off the throttle. Very difficult racetrack.
>>We’re at the monster mile. Chewing up some competitors today. The 42, Kyle Busch, his
battery came loose. He lost power. Came to pit road to repair. Under that repair, he
had a penalty. He comes to pit road. He has no power. They stop to look. You’re allowed
six guys over the wall, seven to service the driver. No one serviced the driver. You see
this gentleman on the pate wall. He seems something. He tells them to jack up. When
he steps over, that makes seven guys. There’s still a person you don’t see on the right
side of the race car. The battery was an unfortunate situation. Seven guys over pit wall, it’s
a silly penalty. They happen. They happen often. Very easy to overcome to three laps
down. Going to need some very unique circumstances to be able to obtain these laps.
>>A mental mistake by the team and that puts Kyle Larson three laps down. The two teammates
racing for position, fighting for the fifth spot. Right now Brad keselowski has the fifth
position. Joey Logano trying to take it away from him. Let’s take a look at today’s rams
guts and glory especially when we’re talking about the 42 team.
>>Yeah, Rick. It started with a disjointed weekend. There’s been rain in the area, short
practices. Teams are going to have to set up. Some hit it. Some haven’t. A situational
awareness. You see the 42 is having trouble. These other chasers have to underthe situation
they’re put in.>>That’s right. Understand what you need
from this race. Competition, whether they’re having a good day or bad day can affect what
your strategy has to be, how aggressive you can be and also how aggressive the crew chief
needs to be. You have to think that Joey Logano and his team are feeling pretty good. They
ran so poorly early in practice this weekend. Although they didn’t get a lot of practice,
they struggle. No speed at all. To be able to sit here, that has to give them a little
bit of confidence. The two teams have not gone well.
>>Challenging Brad keselowski for the fifth spot. He’ll take the fifth away from teammate
Brad keselowski. Kelli.>>Ahead of that group, the crew chief telling
us he feels really good about the direction of the race team. He said the cars they brought
to the last two races, Chicago and New Hampshire, he felt like some of the best race cars they
ever had at those tracks but they definitely want the win today. Momentum is important,
Rick.>>Yeah. Momentum is very, very big. They
had incredible momentum and then bad finished at chicagoland. The very next race at Loudon.
That puts them in a position. As you mentioned, situational awareness. It’s not working out
for them yet. Yet a lot of racing in front of them. 324 laps still to go. They see them
get by.>>I’ve been watching the 48 of Jimmie Johnson.
Consistently one of the top three cars on the racetrack as far as speed goes. You see
them overtake the 20th. Remember, this is a team I think have been looking forward to
get back to this racetrack. A year ago the mechanical failure eliminated. This chase format has not suited him yet.
I think they would approve that incorrect. They wanted to advance, continue to advance.
If you can get Jimmie Johnson into the round of eight, three very, very good racetracks,
he has to be a favorite to make it to the final four.
>>Steve, if you look at the next five racetracks, Jimmie Johnson has 30 career wins. They want
to get through. He told me earlier this week he said mid-summer I would have told you we
had enough to get through the next round, but I honestly did not think we could make
the championship four. But with the speed we brought with the 48 car and Hendrick motorsports
overall in the last couple of weeks, I think we can. As I mentioned very strong. No doubt
Jimmie Johnson is going to be a championship threat if they can get through at Dover where
they’ve won ten times, by the way.>>Kyle Busch out in front. He has. Checked
out by any stretch of the imagination. Just a half second lead over martin Truex Jr. Trying
to advance to the round [ Distorted voice ] Progressive claims to

>>Carl Edwards back there, Rick, with a tight race car but he says it’s gotten a little
bit better. He aid owed the crew and said I think I found something that makes it work
a little bit better. Kyle was running second with 41 to go in June. H goat in a wreck. He told me earlier, I’ve
been excited for this race since we left here in June, Rick.
>>Yeah. That’s a situation where Carl Edwards really tried to have a great run. As we see
a battle for the lead heating up. Kyle Busch had a half a second lead over martin Truex
Jr. They pass the lap traffic of Clint bowyer. Marty.
>>A moment ago, Rick, he radioed to Kyle Busch, you’re 0.2 ahead. Let’s save something
for the end of the race. I think he’s baking up. A lot of traffic in the race and martin
Truex Jr. In another Toyota trying to catch him for the lead as well.
>>They had a split. All the way around the track. The team of Kyle Busch taking advantage
of the high line that’s come in.>>Remember the 78 already winning, with a
win already advancing to the round of 12. Good job to push Kyle Busch harder than he
wants to be pushed. Push Kyle Busch. Remember, you want to race going to the round of 12.
If you can find a way to get him out who’s not as good, that’s what you want.
>>These two were in the championship four last year. Last year it was Kyle Busch who
won at Miami. He was able to go on and be the 2015 champion of the sprint cup series.
Martin Truex Jr. One of the favorite ones entering the race this year as he’s been strong
on all different tracks it’s been so fun. Kyle Busch all the way up, getting close to
the wall. Push the edge to the rubber. That’s where the rubber on the racetrack is. You
don’t want to get above that right now. That’s the mess you don’t want to be in. He’s right
against it.>>Dave, what’s going on with the 24 in chase
Elliott?>>22 points to the good right now you see
as they run on the left. They told me this morning they want him to chase hard. They
believe they really take that. They look for his driver to do that. His report back lately
is his car iscompression. That’s the condition for the moment for chase Elliott. As for the
14 of Tony Stewart. He said he was only going to talk to Tony about the points and where
they were going to lie. Listen to the recent radio.
[ Indiscernible ]>>So he’s hearing from his driver, horrible
race car, worse ever at Dover. He said, now is the time. I govet to remind my driver,
we’re only ten points out. He’s got to remind his driver, stay in the game.
>>It’s a very long race, a lot of laps in front of him. Over 305 laps go in this race.
Kyle Busch has been out front for 74 of the 96 laps, already completed.
>>You talk about how long the race is, Rick, we’re not even to the quarter mark yet. Three
laps way from a quarter of the race through. Remember, this used to be a 500. Reduced to
400. It’s still a very long afternoon.>>These two battle for the 2004 XFINITY series
championship, and it was actually martin Truex Jr. Who ended up winning the title and Kyle
Busch finishing second in that battle. Marty?>>Well, Rick, Jeff talked earlier how Kyle
Busch had moved up the racetrack. Kind of in the middle right there. He had to do that
because of the way his car was handling. He said it helped the back of the car but hurt
the front of the car. He said when I moved up, there was all kinds of grip. You have
to go where your car likes it. It handles better, not necessarily where the grip is
necessarily.>>That’s right. Right where your car is good.
Moving behind these two cars. That blue number 48, he’s coming.

>>Obviously right front tire failure. We saw this in the XFINITY race. This is a product
of very limited practice time, not really getting an understanding of where you are
in your cambers. You can see your cameras here. It’s very hard on the inside edge of
the tire and the tire will fail. Limited practice. In my opinion limited practice really affecting
what the teams can do about their car.>>The safety barrier doing its job again.
You see it compressing as the car hits it, taking a little bit of the hit away as the
cars are making their way onto pit road. Kelli?>>Once again, it fired off a little better
that time. It was definitely more manageable to drive, although it got a little bit tight.
Four tires and fuel for Matt Kenseth. Marty.>>Kyle Busch’s car was a little bit free.
When he went down, it didn’t really help it. It needed a turn as well. You’re going see
an air pressure touch for that. And Jimmie Johnson, the pressure was really good, very
fast at the end of the line. No change for the 48. Dave?
>>For Joey Logano, it was on the edge of loose exit. Made an air pressure adjustment,
for tires and sunoco fuel.>>Race off pit road brought to you by Geico.

runs.>>That’s going to be difficult. That’s the
problem that Kyle Larson had. He’s going to need timing or shorter runs if he’s going
to stay out and get wave-arounds. That’s gonl to be his only opportunity to get these laps.

>>We heard Jimmie Johnson earlier in the race. Earlier he was tight. He did not have
the speed. Later in the run that really helped him. They’re going to see if they made a change
for that or keep that as an advantage. We’re going to find out with Jimmie Johnson starting
on the outside.>>If you remember the last time he started
on the outside, he actually missed a shift and martin Truex Jr. Was right behind him,
bottled up and had a big accident on the restart. Anything can happen.
>>He did. He had a transmission issue and couldn’t get it out. Was it a 16-car pileup
or 18-car pileup?>>Yeah. A 16-car pileup. Not a lot of people
expected that. Kyle Busch chiess the inside lane as we restart. Green flag in the air.>>Watch the concrete. It gets very light
after the caution because the warm tires pick it up off the track but it will be put back
down very quickly.>>Kyle Busch was rock tong restart, already
has a seven-or eight-car lead on Jimmie Johnson who was on the outside of it.
>>Martin Truex Jr. Has moved up into the second spot. Joey Logano running fourth. Denny
Hamlin running in the top five. Behind him, Matt Kenseth in the Dewalt, number 20. He
makes fighting for position between Kenny and Hamlin. All four of Joe Gibbs racing cars
in the chase as well as the alliance team of martin Truex Jr. Austin Dillon. In the
three is the first driver outside the top 12, and it’s three points. That’s three positions
on the racetrack. If Austin Dillon can gain those three positions, he would then be tied
with the 1 of Jamie Mcmurray.>>You saw him get through the corner, fighting
it better than Carl Edwards in the turn. Looks like a pretty good run off turn four.
>>Some really good views. This is where he’s been fast right here. He’s able to really
gain on Carl Edward but then he just can’t get the car turned. He can’t get it to turn.
Carl Edwards has given up a little bit of speed. Right there he gains but then as they
start on the exit, there’s nowhere for Austin Dillon to go.
>>He’s driving like a veteran in front of him. He knows the 3 is better than him through
the corner. That’s why he makes sure he exits right here, right along the apron of the racetrack.
Does not get out on bottom.>>Behind the three team is the 41 of curt
bub, Marty.>>Right now in the 14th position, right where
he needs to be. That’s what he told me early this week. He said, listen, we’re not coming
here to be aggressive this weekend. All we need is the top ten. We just want to advance.
That’s going to be a round of strength. He told Tony Gipson, the changes we just made,
not working so far. Earlier on he was way too loose on entry, on exit. This last run,
way too tight. They’re trying to get the balance on the 41. Still right where they want to
be.>>The problem, Rick, is I understand what
the 41 is saying. Easier said than done. Only 13 points ahead of the cut line. You know,
there are 26 cars within a lap of the leader. There are over 30 cars with two laps of a
leader. With 282 to go, there’s no guarantees. Kyle Busch could have a solid race and have
an issue on the restart and miss the chase.>>Also with this 41 car, we just have to
look at the speed. They were really fast in the spring and in the summer. Ran really well,
but finished fifth in New Hampshire.>>The car just in front of the 41 of Kurt
Busch as the 88 of Jeff Gordon subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Kelli?
>>There’s a sight to see. It’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. Sitting above the pit box of the 88. I
asked the crew what it was like to have Dale back at the track. They say it’s pretty neat.
He gets a different perspective of how the team runs and he can give us perspective.
He’s been listening. They had a discussion about any changes they made. He said when
Dale comes, he can help us out. Qualifies, how I work with engineers. We can start fine
tuning things this year so we can come out of the box next year when he gets back behind
the wheel next season.>>I think those experiences. I know when

New leader at Dover. Once again it’s martin Truex Jr. Who has been able to overtake the
18 of Kyle Busch. This is how it happened.>>Martin working the bottom. The 18 right there, Kyle Busch saw he was
faster and didn’t contest him down the straightaway.>>Jimmie Johnson also able to get by the
18 of Kyle Busch, so he moves up to second. Marty.
>>Martin Truex Jr. Happy with the race car in the last run, Rick. He caught it deep,
it has an air ficitdeficit. Kyle Busch is the man he took the lead from when we started
the this green flag run. He started up at front. But take a listen.
>>I need help. [ Indiscernible ]
>>Jeff, it would seem with two corners, there would only be one apex. Help us understand
why there’s two apexes at Dover.>>Apex would be the center where the car
needs to turn. At this racetrack the corners are so long and so wide, there are two apexes.
You enter the corner, drive in it. I don’t think you turn straight but you don’t turn
as hard as you normally would. Right here it’s the beginning of the apex. That’s the
first turn. Then you go straight and the second mark is where you turn the car again. So in
both case YOS view to have the car poibled in the direction you need to point it in and
get enough of a grip.>>Let’s right along. He gets to the apron
right about there. You see he kind of comes up. Then he goes down right there. The second
APEC. Two corners within one. As you say, you go to Charlotte or other big one, you
get in and run the white line and leave. Here at Dover there really are two corners.
>>Imagine a long ramp. You get off the interstate. It goes forever. You’re constantly turning but then you have
to turn again as you approach the interstate. It’s very, very similar to that.
>>I will tell Kyle Busch that him and 40 other cars do not like how you turn at the
second apex. That’s the challenge. If you can get into the corner, the question is can
you turn back down the hill.>>A lot of guys talk about that. He drives
in, up the banking, and downher.>>If you notice, he’s not giving up. He says,
hey, it is what it is. He’s searching. We saw him on the top of the racetrack. Now he’s
at the very bomb. That’s what the racetrack allows you to do. It changes around. In making
that adjustment he’s found speed. He’s started to break even with the 478.
>>So that’s a lot of talk about the guys who are running up in the first three positions.
How about the guy running back in 12th, Dave?>>He’s been working on the guy. Austin Dillon
has been told by the spotter, keep working that exit because that’s where you’re almost
meeting the 19 car of Carl Edwards. Most of the day it’s been a tight race car for Austin
Dillon. What about the pressure of the chase. You see on the left, he’s still the first
man out, only three points behind. When I talked to his crew chief, he said, I went
to bed at 11:30. I was wide awake at 1:30 and could never go back to sleep. So much
pressure for the crew chief, so much on his mind.
>>There’s so much for everyone involved. The pressure ramps up. This is an elimination
race. He could leave this chase race and not have that same chance.>>Most of these guys in the Ford grew up
wanting to be in this race. It is an opportunity of a lifetime. They’ve worked so hard to do
it. When it’s right in front of you, it’s all you can think about. You can’t get away
from it.>>Mike.
>>Rick, perhaps the Cinderella story of this year is the 34 car of Kurt Buscher, going
the victory at pocono and making their way and qualifying for the chase. They had hoped
to play spoil never the advance beyond the round of 16. Although they came in today,
he’s been the hole. BOB thought they might be able to use brakes and get strategy to
get to the front. Unfortunately as the race has played out so far, they’ve not found the
speed. Their chance of getting to victory lane and pulling off a hail Mary, it may not
happen. Maybe, maybe, just like in pocono, something may happen that allows them to play
a strategy move.>>They utilized the weather situation and
came onto pit rode a little bit earlier. When they stayed out, they ended up getting lead
and then all of a sudden the ball rolled at poconos.
>>A body slam move. Now he’s got to run him down at the straightaway and let him know
his displeasure. Not the kind of racetrack you want to be rubbing fenders.
>>What I was saying, there’s a lot of experience. They had a lot of experience with Carl Edwards.
They made the chase race together. What an impressive year. Didn’t get a ride on Roush.
Showdown up each and every work. He did the best he could and run that race. You can see it here. He took it. I wonder
what Kevin Harvick is thinking behind him three or four laps down. Listen, guys, I don’t
want any part of this. I’ve already had a bad day. I don’t need it to be worse. Again,
Kevin Harvick, his view. He will advance to the round of 12.
>>He says, I don’t want to be part of this. He’s probably laughing. While it’s funny,
only because he had to have a win.>>If you ever wanted to know the value of
a win, wait to talk to Kevin Harvick after today’s race. So important that they had the
win from a week ago. Kevin Harvick has never finished last in his 567 career starts. He
won’t be last in this one. Ryan Blaney is already off the track, so he’s catching him
already. This is me, using a wrench to build a jet
engine. Well we thought GE programmed machines to talk. GE is an industrial company that
actually builds world-changing machines. Machines that can talk to each other digitally. Hello?
They don’t talk to each other like that, Ricky. Shhhh, you’ll anger it. He looks a little
ticked off now.>>>Today’s aerial coverage provided by our
partners at smithfield food as we look down on the monster mile. Out front, martin Truex
Jr., Joey Logano running in the third position. He’s behind Jimmie Johnson. So it’s Toyota,
Chevy, and Ford, the top three. Jamie Mcmurray and Austin Dillon separated
by one point in the chase running. And currently it’s Austin Dillon that has the advantage.
Mike?>>And, Rick, those two have been swapping
that transfer spot throughout the course of this race and right now Austin Dillon has
the advantage. As for Jamie Mcmurray, he had radioed earlier in the race that he had a
vibration. Here’s the earliest thing he had to say about it.
>>Some type of weird drive thing, vibration, maybe the drive shaft. But that’s not it.
>>So with only 159 laps complete, still lots of racing remaining and lots of concern as
it relates to that vie brarks Dave.>>I talked about it. He said it was running
niechlts then they came here this weekend a little bit different setup-wise but that
their teammates used what they had in the spring and that was working for them. So Saturday
they swapped back over to that. They felt it was going to be the right jipt for today.
Lately they made changes to the car and he’s found it going the three. Nk that’s as much
of a concern. He’s moved up the racetrack. Right now he’s passing on the bottom. He’s
moved up the racetrack and when he did, he found a way around Edwards. He has one of
the top three or four fastest cars on the racetrack right now.
>>Rick, we talk about anyone can be eliminated with a mistake, but they about how emotionally
draining this must be for Austin Dillon and Jamie Mcmillan. 3 1/2, four.
>>Lose a couple spots could be a difference from your year.
>>Jamie Mcmurray felt those very emotion as year ago when he made it into the chase,
got to this elimination race and actually was tied in points. He had the tiebreaker as far as being able
to advance and so he was eliminated after the race last year. Once again he’s in a position.
It’s a single point right now that he’s behind the three team.
>>Let’s think about chip ganassi racing. We talk about it all week how well he runs
here. They have an issue. They’re 16 points below. The other hope for chip ganassi training.
>>We’ll see if he can make some ground at the bottom.
>>That was nicely done, not entering the bottom. He does the same thing down here.
Can he stay even the 24?>>What’s so difficult, you’re running the
top. You’re not sure. You don’t have a reference anymore. The last time you were on the bottom
was a long time ago.>>He’s faster than the cars in front of him.
He’s running them down.>>Mike.
>>It’s all right.>>.>>And joust heard the radio guys from inside
the race car, Jamie Mcmurray talk about that vibration a few timing during the race. You
feel like maybe the motor is expiring.>>It sounded down, the sill Ders. Keeps up
right here. The middle of the corner. The 23 easily passes them. This one definitely has a power irv.
>>Once again it looks as though Jamie Mcmurray is looking at heartbreak. As far as advancing
out of the first round of the chase, he’s 11 miles an hour slower than martin Truex
jr.’s last lap time.>>It’s hard to believe that chganassi raining
has done that it’s made the first 26 races truly the regular race. And then the ee Lakers
excitement, you could win a championship but only three races later you come to Dover and
you have to continue those hopes. We can see instantly how difficult it is.

to back up. Mechanical issues with that car. The 42. Also chip ganassi racing 19 points
back. They had a battery issue early. So that’s put them in a hole.
>>And, Rick, this really changes the outcome of the 14, Tony Stewart. Although it looks
dark for them 13 down, pretty soon one will fall back and he’ll be the first car below
the front line. What that means is if any of the cars in front of him have a mechanical
issue, we’ve seen that, Tony Stewart could be the next guy to move in.
>>It’s showing when you lose these spots how significant it is. When you have a problem,
it shows the active meaning of it. It’s really important to understand why it’s so important
not to have mechanical issues and what winning does. If you win, it moves you along.
>>The 42 of Kyle Larson is fast enough. He’s as fast as the 2 or the 24. You see the 1
on the left of your screen just off the pace. We just need to get some timely cautions if
the 42 hopes to get back on the lead left.>>Right now all ten drivers in the top ten
are chase drivers. Jeff Gordon. Kurt Busch. The last chaser on the lead lap is 14th. Then
you’ve got Jamie Mcmurray, Chris Buescher, Kyle Larson, and Kevin Harvick all laps down.
Mike.>>Looks as though the caution has come out
for the 42. As quickly as the 42 was running around the racetrack even though he was four
laps Dow.>>Did you blow a tire?
>>Yep.>>You heard there, did you blow a tire. The
quick response, “Yep. ” running the high line. I would say that’s a good thing. He was closer
to the wall.>>At that point, there’s nothing you can
do. You hope you don’t hit it too hard. We talked about how hard this racetrack is on
tires. It just adds to the problem.>>A free pass will go to the 16 of Greg Biffle
as the 42 team will once again go to work. On that car. It has been one thing after another
for Kyle Larson and this team. He had an electrical issue. Then penalized
for too many men over the wall. Allowed six. He had seven. Then a right side tire going
down when they were multiple laps. Hitting the wall and bringing the caution out. The
one behind him, the 1 of Jamie Mcmurray. They’re going to get under the hood and see if there’s
anything they can look at.>>Right now Jamie Mcmurray is only one lap
down. We saw it earlier. That were prepared to repair it.
>>They were having a long discussion with Hendrick motorsports, Scott maxim trying to
diagnose what might be going on with that race car. Jamie said they were down one cylinder
and thought they might be going down another. They’re looking at the electrical system to
see if there’s anything there that might be able to be corrected that might prevent them
from falling back.>>They had a gun. They were checking the
cylinders?>>Yeah. So basically the one run — that’s
why the hedger teams were there. They checked the temperatures of the cylinder. Whichever
cylinder is not firing should be cooler. Marty.>>Kyle Busch said they went way too far on
the last adjustment and made it extremely tough for him. Not being happy. They’re going
to see them undo the last adjustment which is a west adjustment. For Jimmie Johnson he’s
done better. The track bar adjustment was helping but I need a little bit more. So you’re
going to see a wedge and air pressure jaunt.>>The third-place runner Joey Logano will
have it put on with a little different air pressure to help him turn better in traffic.
That was his only major complaint during that run. He gets sunoco and he’s down and out

>>You can’t see.>>No, sir. I’m going to go to the garage?
The only reason you go to the garage is if you want to try to fix it so it doesn’t completely
blow up that. Would be the strategy.>>Others have issues later in the race.

looking to join very elite company of seven championships. Only Dale Earnhardt and Richard

Marty.>>>>Rick, Jimmie Johnson now in the lead.
They have truck early. It’s too tight for Jimmie. When the air pressure has come up,
that’s when the clean air will certainly help the 48. I was talking to Jimmie earlier this
week. He said when there’s a down turn in racinging, you don’t know where to start because
the 1 car right now, Rick, problems on the racetrack.
>>Yeah. They expected it. It blew up out of turn number four and left smoke all the
way across the front of the grand stands and probably some fluid along the track up top.
So this will be a pretty extensive cleanup for. The one team’s engine does let go and
once again Jamie Mcmurray will not advance out of the first round, the round of 16 in
just his second year of making the chase.>>You know the disappointment is so big for
this racing team. They had such a solid year. Not a great year to put themselves in position.
They talk about maybe going to the garage to fix it. They didn’t do it. So eventually
it erupted. A terminal problem right now. The problem with going to the garage and fixing
it, how do you fix it. You don’t have a machine shop with you. There’s only so many thing
use can do. Maybe taking the rocker arms off of the cylinder, that’s about the only thing
you can do. You can see the smoke coming out of the pipes.
>>From underneath that car. So unfortunate that Jamie Mcmurray in just his second chase
has once again at Dover ended his title hopes.>>It’s been a rough day for all of chip ganassi
racing.>>Still an opportunity for Kyle Larson. With
Jamie Mcmurray, you know that that opportunity is gone. Kyle Larson, four laps down. It’s
definitely an uphill battle. You can’t write him off just yet. He still has an opportunity
to play some strategy games to see if he can get a lap or two or four to get back on the
lead lap.>>If people have trouble, he could be right
there. Obviously Chris Buescher has a lot of points. He’s a lot of points behind. With
a few more problems, he counseled fight his way in. But it good evening be an uphill battle.

your perspective on the situation.>>I had a good credit one, thanks, Chevy.
It’s unfortunate to both the 42 and the 1 that had a problem but it is what it is. That’s
why we race. I’m proud of my team, proud of our guys. All the hard work we put in. It
stinks that it’s over this way, but we get to race next week. We’ll come back and try
to do it again.>>Thank you.
>>Thank you.>>He still has a good attitude despite his
championship hopes being over with.>>The one thing you can look to when you
look at Jamie Mcmurray, he’s won the biggest races in this sport. He’s not won the championship
but he’s won the marquis races in stock car racing.
>>Such a good attitude. Jamie puts his head down and goes to work. Remember, he and his
crew chief are fairly new in their relationship. They made big strides this year. They can
take a lot of pride in that. They’ve got to find a way to continue to improve, but that
team has gotten better, and I think it will continue to get better.
>>Let’s listen in to the 14 radio just moments ago. This is what they had to say.
>>I’m going to give you an update right now. Eight points behind Austin there in front
of you.>>And it’s down to five now because Austin
is behind him.>>Sometimes that’s all somebody like Tony
Stewart needs. They talk about it. How he’s had success. He’s won championships in the
sprint cup series. In his final subpoena, that’s all he need was a glimmer of hope.
A little light at the end of the tunnel. The 14 car to go out and attack and try to attack.
>>He’s going get a challenge back from young Austin Dillon. But it was very loose at the
start of that race — or the start of that last run. He said the air pressure change
might have been too much. He said, you’ll thank me at the end of the laps. And he agrees.
We’ll see if he comes back to Tony’s liking and he can battle back to his position.
>>His teammate goes around him as well. He’s got to keep fighting, try to find a way to
make his car a little bit better. There’s a battle for third.
>>The 18 of Kyle Busch gets in back of keselowski.>>Brad drops back to fourth. Just 192 laps
to go. Now 191. As far as laps in this elimination race. The bottom four at the end of this race.
The top 16 point standings will not advance into the round of 12. Their championship hopes
dashed.>>And, Rick, the other 12, they’ll all be
reset. Back to square one and they’ll continue to rate all tied in points.
>>We talked about it several times based on where he was. We saw him drive up to sixth
place. He pitted. They lost a spot on pit road. Did not do very well on the restart.
I don’t know if his car isn’t good on the short run. But this transaction got him back
up. He passed Tony Stewart to get to the spot
he’s in. They’ve got to find a short run speed if they want to keep the track position they’ve
earned.>>Guys, I was looking at the restart. What
happened with Austin. They didn’t make any changes. They changed four tires but they
really doesn’t just it at all. He was happy at the end. A little bit hard to handle at
the initial restart.>>I want to listen in to the radio for Austin
Dillon moments ago. This is what they had to say.
>>Guys, on the restart, we’ll get it back here.
>>10/4, no worries, all good.>>The only one is at 14. The field.
>>Yeah, I know it. I know it. He’s not very fast.
>>Yeah, I know. It will take care of itself.>>He did a good job right there.
>>They put points there. The teams are paying attention to it too. That’s what they’re talking
about it. You heard Tony Stewart’s team talk about it and Austin Dillon team’s talk about
it. They’re paying attention to where they are and where they’re running. We understand
the race isn’t over right now. It’s exceptionally important. You hear how important it is. The
teams are talking about it. That’s all that matters, Steve. How are you compared to your
competition?>>That’s it. This is a points battle? The
whole idea is to have enough points to transfer into the next round.
>>Three drivers have an opportunity to advance using wins, and the remaining nine will have
to use points to advance into the round of 12. We see Austin Dillon working that high
line trying to go by Carl Edwards on the outside.>>Here he comes. It just doesn’t go well.
You heard him say, hey, sorry about that restart, which tells me he didn’t do a good job of
the restart. He gave up a spot. Maybe the car wasn’t as bad. He didn’t make
the right move at the right time. It’s amazing at the restart how that can turn into number
4. It comes at you at such a high rate of speed. That’s why we talk about restarts and
how important they are. You’ve got to be aggressive and effective in them.
>>Aggressively running at the monster mile. The 48 of Jimmie Johnson out front.

Jimmie Johnson still holding on to about a half a second lead over martin Truex Jr. Kyle
Busch, Brad keselowski, and Matt Kenseth, the top five. Let’s see who’s chopping the
speed charts brought to you by mountain dew. Martin Truex Jr., his last lap, 1422. Lead
‘eers last lap, 148.631.>>We talked about that. Had trouble executing.
Now with the speed and the last race car, can they get down pit road. All those things
they struggled with lately, they still have to do that in order to finish it off.
>>No doubt Hendrick motorsports brought speed. Whenever asked what’s going on, how you do
fix it H E said F we knew, we would fix it. He said, through any downturn in racing it
changes direction of where the speed is. There’s a process to get going through in pa past.
Sometimes you don’t know where to start but you’ve got to start somewhere. No doubt they
look to work to get to this point in the chase.>>It can’t become chaos. Whether something
worked or didn’t work, what you tried. If you don’t change too many things you don’t
make any Ed way. You look at the track. Currently at 23. I’ve been looking aet this track, Jeff.
You and I have had the conversation. The 48, I get sick of hearing it having a
downturn, sick of hearing about it not being fast enough. They’re currently leading their
41st lap of the day. It could be just the momentum this team needs. The chasing all
summer long. Maybe it puts them toward the top with their chests out a little more confident.
>>I think this entire season, Jeff, you know, even the last two seasons because of this
new format, people have said, well, Jimmie Johnson hasn’t been able to advance. He hasn’t
been able to figure out this for Matt. I think that’s almost fuel on the fire for the 48
team. Chad Knaus, Jimmie Johnson. They know they’re championship caliber of a team every
year, but this rat hasn’t suited them up to the this point. Maybe they’re saying, we can
win in this format.>>Facts don’t lie. They haven’t found a way.
Until they prove it, they haven’t been good enough in this format. Remember, they’re six-time
champions. I am a big believer in this team. I know how good they are. We have high expectations
for them. We expect them to win, to compete at a high level, not mace Mick stakes. So
that’s the thing. In this position with a fast race car, can they finish it off. They’re
ized.>>They had this to say on the radio moments
ago.>>The only one not on the bottom. You see
it there. First team.>>Quite a bit of sunshine, a little more.
>>24, 24 behind. A lot of fls there. Drivers worry left hand. They both ran it.
You heard him. I don’t think it affects the handling as much. It affects how much tire
rubber adheres to the racetrack. It seems like it’s going to be even blacker. The tire
rubber is going to stick more. That’s going to change the handling. After restarting has

>>48 is out front. Let’s hear a little bit about his teammates, Kelli.
>>Starting with the 88 of Jeff Gordon. Filling in. He has yet to finish inside the top ten.
The crew chief would like to change that today. He said that’s one of the things that’s been
frustrated for the team all season. They feel like they’ve been running better than where
they have been finishing. They hope to clean that up before the season
and out. Another teammate, the team of Kasey kahne has had fourth race top ten finishes.
When I talked to their crew chief, he talked about it. He said, you know, it’s really a
lot of things have started to go awry. Everyone was upbeat and things we have been working
on starting months ago are just now beginning to pave fruition.
>>24 has been having a good day. Essentially when I was talking with him this morning about
the chase, he said, this race is like calling because it’s not a race where you get stuck
and you don’t have a chance. You can work on the race car. We’ll see if he changes the
line at all to try to get more speed. He was talking about the three car moments ago.
>>Man, I don’t know.>>I don’t know. That’s kind of odd.
>>He was, by the way, the fattest car the last lap.
>>He fell way back but he’s gotten by a lot of the people. Austin Dillon. He’s inside the top 12 as we
go NASCAR nonstop. Experts choose Goodyear. And everything we

>>>Formula 1 is on nc on Saturday. 23 points in the standings. We’ll start with race leader
Jimmie Johnson.>>It’s hard to believe it’s been a while.
A career-long winless streak. He told Chad Knaus a moment ago, very happy with the race
car. Unless you feel the track is going to change, don’t change. You also remember the
steelering wheels. They’re now up for auction at the NASCAR foundation website. In fact,
they’ve auctioned one already, martin Truex Jr. It raised $100,000 and Busch said his
car is way too loose to attack for about the next 15 laps.
>>Brad keselowski has been pretty happy with his race car most of the day. Kelli?
>>Matt Kenseth won at Dover back in may but he admitted they didn’t have the best win. They kind of snuck away. The car they brought
today is very similar but a little better. They’ve been working on the handling, at one
point going back on some of the adjustments. Right now Matt Kenseth saying he needs to
be a little tighter. Dave?>>24 car has been a little bit edgy most
of the afternoon. That’s been the biggest complaint the driver has had. At age 20 he’s
trying to be one of the younger drivers to win the championship in the sprint cup series.
>>Joey Logano with the 22 car this afternoon has had mostly a need for help turning in
traffic. What he needs now is not to be passed by the fast car of Dillon. No car has been
in of late as Austin Dillon as others have been noticing including radio we heard a little
while ago from Tony Stewart.>>And the 11, Denny Hamlin. He’s been a little
tight. It’s kept that driver from getting full feel of it. It was the suspension that
got him in trouble yesterday. Something they found after practice and fixed, Marty.
>>It’s been a quiet chase for him back in the 12th position right now. That was a sixth
last week at New Hampshire. Right now struggling. Way too tight for that race team. And Kurt
Busch struggling. That was until this run. They finally got that car loosened up. Remember,
a little bit of a note. They pitted later than everybody else. They came in when a lot
of the guys stayed out. They’ll be able go in.
>>Even though Tony Stewart lost some positions, we saw them all right in a row at the beginning
of the last run. He said the balance is pretty good. Ck free. That’s what he’d like to fix.
Rick.>>Thanks, guys. You see Tony Stewart. On
the outside of the top 12. He is 13 points back from the three of Austin Dillon. Austin
Dillon currently in the 12th position as far as champion hopes continuing after this race.>>You’ve got Jimmie Johnson not too far behind
him. He’s behind him. Jimmie and Tony are on the same straightaway. He’s going to have
to get going. It was back on 184. So they have gone almost 80 laps.
>>This is a 400-lap race. You have to understand you’re racing the monster mile. A very difficult
monster racetrack. You see the big save behind Jimmie Johnson. If you go back to the spring,
you see how quickly things can change. Jimmie Johnson had a big change. Wouldn’t come out
of second gear. Jumbled up the field. How many cars get collected. So 139 to go today.
There’s still a lot of opportunity. These drivers are all doing exactly what they need,
which is to race the racetrack. Understand where their competitors are and try to remain
patient as the race goes by.>>Very familiar with quite a few chasers
as far as drivers that were involved in that wreck. Jamie Mcmurray, his afternoon has ended.
Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, martin Truex Jr., all know how quickly things can
change at the monster mile.>>You mentioned coming up on green flag pit
stop. I know we parked it. This race no different. Added pit lines for this race this weekend.
Pit road speed is very, very difficult. It’s only 35 miles an hour. With all of the chase
contenders running inside the top eight, we’ve seen other issues. A speeding penalty can
cost a team two laps here.>>It could easily be disastrous as was almost
this for the 16.>>He’s running hard trying to save him one
down. Almirola pushing him. No harm, no foul. Didn’t hit anything.
>>Yeah. Any time you’re on an oval and you have to turn the wheel to the right, you know
there’s an issue with your car.>>You mentioned speeding on pit road. Remember,
Jimmie Johnson made 118 laps in Chicago, running second, pitted on the green and got caught
for speeding. Those are the mistakes teams can’t make. You saw it in New Hampshire. He
worked on his pit road speed, tried to make sure he was on pit road speed. But with the
limited practice this weekend, there really wasn’t an opportunity to work on getting on
pit road. They’re going to have to be conservative.>>I was going to say it’s not pit road speed.
Look at where it’s located. Even more than that, it’s easy to hit the end of pit road.
The way the commitment box is so far up the racetrack, you can be under the pit box but
be right of the pit wall and make a last-minute decision. We’ve seen cars have accidents coming
off pit road.>>A lot of times the racetrack was dry but
pit road was a little bit damp so the teams weren’t able to get on pit road as aggressively
as they were. They try to put two chasers a lap down right here.
>>They’re going to do it to kufrt Busch of the 41. He clears him. It will put curt a
lap down. Looking forward to the 14 of Tony Stewart also trying to put the three-time
champion a lap down. Tony Stewart not wants to give the line to the 48 as he prefers to
stay in front of him, hoping for a potential caution for pit stops to start before he gets
put a lap down.>>We talked about how difficult this pit
injury is. We’ll look back. This is the XFINITY race. He makes contact with barrier at the
end of pit road. He was underneath the Orange cone. He was pitted legally to pit road but
didn’t have enough room to miss the pit wall. That’s how easy you can have it.
>>At most racetracks you use that pit box, that Orange box on the end of pitch road.
That’s where you use your reference point. You see it here. That wall is way inside of
it. Things happen quickly. You forget that that wall is there and the position that it’s
in.>>It’s a speed discrepancy.
>>That’s right.>>We see those at Bristol. You see those
at martinsville. I know Dover’s only a mile. This is a very fast racetrack. Kyle running
third. Kyle Busch has LED the most laps. He continues to add to that number while he’s
out front. Martin Truex Jr., 81. Brad keselowski LED the first five laps of the race.
>>The pace he set, he’s only 12 cars in it. He’s now the last car on the lead last.
>>Sorry, Rick. Was going to say it wouldn’t seem like 15, 16, 17 would be the place to
be. But somehow the Fords are trying to push. Roush phenly failed to put a car into the
chase this year. That disappoints this company. They want to get better. They want to improve.
It seems like Biffle — I won’t say a great day but a better company over the recent runs.
>>We heard the report from Marty about Jimmie Johnson an his team. It took him a while. They weren’t running
well, diagnosing problems was difficult, trying to figure out how to fix it was even more
difficult. The Roush Fenway team has been going through that. They’ve been going through
it much longer. Once you lose that speed, it is so hard to find. Once again the fuel
window, just over 85 laps. Last time they were on pit road. And already at lap 275 some
are heading to pit road including the 24 of chase Elliott. Casey Mears is already down
there. We go to Dave.>>Rick, he was running very well. Since he
cooled down he’s been happy with the race car. Don’t expect much adjustment. He’s watching
the weather, wondering if it will warm back up. Kelly.
>>Matt Kenseth running inside the topfire, his crew chief saying that would be a success,
but they need to tighten it up. Four tires and fuel, Dave.
>>The 3 car had a new crew last week. I asked how it went. He said they saved us last week,
saved us three spots and that’s how we got a pass. He’ll get four tires, sunoco fuel
and a wedge adjustment, Marty.>>Out of control loose. You’re going to see
him make some adjustments trying to tighten up this 18 car. Air pressure is going to be
the call. Martin Truex Jr. Said it’s too free on entry and too tight as well. Leader Jimmie Johnson rolling in. They’re
still very happy with this race car. They would love to take it the early part. They’re
trying to get around with the gas can and they’re going to make a little bit of an adjustment.
We’ll see if it’s done in time.>>1.5 was the difference in the gap. Martin
Truex Jr. We’ll see after the pit stops how that cycles through as Brad keselowski is
on pit road. Dave?>>You saw that car a little bit tight. He
received adjustments for that. After Brad keselowski, he said I’m an two in every category.
So a little bit of everything but not all that bad. That’s where we’ve been so far this
afternoon. For Brad, it will be an air pressure adjustment for him and sunoco fuel.
>>Once again a pit road mix stake for the 48 team. They were over the wall too soon.
He’ll have to come to pit road to serve the penalty.
>>Kurt Busch went down. The car now two free. They’re tight all day long. To free on the
run. Left side air pressure adjustment to tighten it up.
>>Championship-caliber team cannot continue to make these mistakes and since that they’re
going to win a championship.>>That’s why we have been critical of this
team.>>So the pit crew cannot jump over. They cannot touch the ground in their pit Staal
until the 48 car is within three pit stalls of their Staal.
>>One pit Staal.>>One Staal away for the driver
— for the crew members to touch the concrete. So this is something that used to be a judgment
call. But now with these new camera systems that NASCAR’s been using for the last couple
of years, it’s no longer an adjustment call. That’s what they were talking about. NASCAR
will send them a video. They will. Here’s your crew member’s foot touching the ground.
>>He accelerates to get back onto the track, but once again, the damage done to the 48.
Was leading this race.>>You can see right here. There’s a crew
member already in the pit box and Jimmie Johnson is clearly more than a Staal away. He’s taking
a second stop. Listen, we’re talking about a matter of inches. This is like when they
were trying to stay on the lead lap.>>There was an opening there.
>>There’s still a line. It has nothing to do with the opening. You still have the same
amount of distance as every other race team. You’ll have a mark and that’s what NASCAR
will use to judge it.>>Two races. Both of those races, they had
penalties on pit road.>>The prepit box or prepit stalls, you can’t
drive through three pit staals to get into your Staal, but once again, one Staal out
is as far as the car can be when anyone’s foot touches the ground in the pit stall,
and that’s where he got caught on.>>Running in 16th position. Went from the
lead of the race to being a lap down and 16.>>Take another look. And this is the NASCAR
replay.>>So this is the shot that NASCAR looks at.
You see right here, the red line. That is one Staal away. You see it in the middle of
the 18 box. That’s because the 48 has an opening behind it. Clearly when the 48 was not — before
he broke that red line, there was already a crew member touching the concrete. I know
that seems silly, but that’s the rule. There is black and white. That’s what happens.
There’s no judgment call. It’s that simple. Back out in front. They hope to get to victory
lane as we go NASCAR, nonstop. Crowd: (Collective cheering) Joey, I don’t
know how you pulled that off man. What’s next? Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
Oh, Coca-Cola! You’re gonna show this whole world.
You’re gonna shine! Can you feel it? Can you feel it? Oh, Coca-Cola! Oh, Coca-Cola!
>>>Welcome back. Ricky stenhouse Jr. Still has yet to come to pit road. They’re running
third. Barack keselowski, chase Elliott in the top five. The big story has to be Jimmie
Johnson and another mistake on pit road has relegated them all the way back to 14.
>>Rick, I want to revisit it one more time. With 105 laps to go, it’s a major story line.
If you see Jimmie Johnson, if you look at the crew member right here, he’s clearly touching
the pit box. You can’t be there. There’s a little white dash that the crew members can
use. That is there for safety. They don’t want the crew members in the pit box before
the car gets there. Say the car spun out. We see it all the time. If they kneel and
wait they would be defenseless to a spinning race car.
>>Look at the 43 coming out. Now the 43 is blocking the crew of the pit crew for the
48, so that made it a little more difficult for the jack man to understand when he could
go over the wall. He didn’t do anything wrong but visually it’s much more difficult to decide
when to go because of where the 43 is.>>It’s tough. It’s timing. You can’t leave
extra time. You have to be out there ready to do your job. But it’s for everyone. One
thing, what NASCAR done is taken officiating to a very consistent level. That same scrutiny
is placed on every team. The race leader all the way back. I think that’s the key. If you’re
gong to call it that close, you have to be able to do it equally and I think that’s what
this camera system has done for NASCAR.>>Surprisingly, it’s the tenth infraction
this year for the 48 team, the second time for the men over the wall too soon in the
daytona 500 earlier this year. The first time. This is what they had to say on the radio.
>>All right. Everything’s fine. We’ve got a two-lap cushion it looks like on transfer.
>>That goes back to what we said at the beginning of the show. Situal awareness. You look at
the mistakes in four of the last five races. Don’t let the emotion of these mistakes multiply.
We saw they had a penalty they didn’t need. Stay calm. Understands the situation. The
goal is too advance.>>Jimmie Johnson has now worked himself up
to 12th place. He has one car in front of him, Kasey kahne. If Jimmie Johnson runs him
down, he can be the first one in position when the caution comes out. So it’s not over
yet. The day is not over, but they’ve certainly dug themselves a hole.
>>Currently five Toyotas in the top ten as we take a look at the Toyota driver update.
Out front. Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, ten. All five drivers
looking to advance to the round of 12. All well above the cut line. He’s 25 points
ahead of 13. At under 100 laps to go at Dover, and the weather has been inconsistent. It
was overcast pretty much the first half. How difficult is it.>>.
>>I would be able to answer if I knew because this track always through a curb ball to me.
>>So good over the entirety of the run. Clean racetrack. Rubbered up. It’s probably one
of the biggest compromised racetracks as far as runs.
>>Martin Truex Jr. Out front has a second lead over Kyle Busch running second.t GE?

13. I want to get a few updates and we start with Marty snider.
>>Well, Rick, around the 16, he’s been kind to martin Truex Jr. Won in chicagoland. LED
the most laps in new Hampshire last week and leading at his hometown racetrack at Dover
right now. He had to get 150 tickets for his friends and family. Every time he comes here,
he has to get the tickets but well worth it. He said the crack is really rubbered in. They’re
corporate teammates. Martin Truex Jr. Has a lot of ground to make up. Right now probably
in second, Dave.>>Brad keselowski started in first. The only
other time at Dover was in 2014 where they LED by one lap and finished second. Today,
coming in at a better position than anyone in the chase except for the race winners.
A similar performance would be more than enough to Vance and he’s doing it today. The 24 of
chase Elliott behind him. Chase has been having a pretty good run this afternoon. Just trying
to get through traffic, and that was the last thing they talked about. Eddie said, sorry,
man, they let the troops through. He said, that’s all right. We’ll be fine. Kelli?
>>A healthy points margin. When I talked to his crew chief he said, well, Matt is one
of the best drivers at being a headsy driver. He knows when to push and when to take what
the day gives you. Sometimes that competitiveness has to come
in and remind each other of the big picture. Right now he’s running top five through the
next round. Dave?>>Did I mention the drivers and spotters
are getting angry about it? He said they’re getting out of the way, then he was reminded.
Tlooe big picture. Big picture.>>Austin Dillon, his big picture is he’s
done well on pit road on the driver’s side. They pit way down on turn one because they
wanted a constant feed for him all the way through and guys not pulling out in front
of him. It’s been good today.>>Jeff Gordon is a five-time winner at Dover.
When asked what a success would be today, he said a win. He said to go to pit lane with
Jeff Gordon would be pretty cool but he said it’s feeling like there’s thousands of pounds
of air in the tires. They made an adjustment at pit road to help him out. Dave?
>>They did a complete reset. To basics. Someone else’s basics. That’s why you had teammates
and he went in his teammate’s direction. Rick?>>Look who’s behind Denny Hamlin, about to
put Denny Hamlin a lap down. Martin Truex Jr. Martin Truex Jr. About to lap the ninth
placed car in Denny Hamlin. He does, and now he’ll set his sights on Jeff Gordon who’s
running agent. He did lap the 19 of Carl Edwards moments ago. When he did, take a look at how
loose Carl Edwards did.>>He’s getting around. 98 trieaccelerate
off the corner. Loses the bottom and is along for the ride.
>>One thing we need to be watching here is nine of the last 11 races here have had final
green flag stretches of 35 laps or less. So it’s not unusual to have a late race caution.
So, you know, if I’m martin Truex, I’m trying to put as many cars a lap down as I possibly
can. I keep the pressure on. There’s also game
separation between you and Kyle Busch when you come on pit road. He would not be able
to be on your bumper. So as many charges as you can get between you and Kyle, that’s an
advantage. Mike? I’m sorry, Marty.>>That’s all right, Jeff. I’ll tell you what
Carl Edwards struggling for that run. They’ve had that condition for much of the race. I
talked to Rogers this morning. A situational awareness. He said, listen. We need a top
ten out of this and that’s it. Carl did ask earlier about the points situation and where
it was. Under a caution they told him they were up right now in a comfortable spot. Right
now, plus 26. So the car not handling the way they wanted to but not too worried about
where they are.>>Very surprised in this era of NASCAR when
you get a free pass or you get the wave-around to have this few cars on the lead lap toward
the end of the race. 76 laps to go and only eight cars currently on the lead lap and potentially
he could catch up to Joey Logano who’s returning sixth right now. Joey Logano is only two seconds
in front of him.>>By the way, a six-second lead over the
second.>>That’s really a dominant performance. Remember,
martin Truex Jr. Was running second the last time the pit stops took place. He was running
second to Jimmie Johnson. How blistering of a pace he had been. Truex Jr. Out front. 120
laps already as we go NASCAR nonstop. So you’re up at dawn,
K, , look alive. You’ve been saving for a big man-cave.
(chuckling) Good luck with that, Dave. You made the most of your retirement plan,
so you better learn to drive that rv, man. So many things you’re doing in your life.

Find out what makes Kevin Harvick tick and how he got to the place he is today. 78 able
to just now pass the three of Austin Dillon. So now only the top six are on the lead lap,
and the 78 closing in on Joey Logano who is currently sixth. Let’s go to Kelli.
>>Kevin Harr vk in t4 car racing, 45 laps down. Remember early in this race they had
a track bar mount break which sent him back to the garage to be fixed. Obviously not what
they were hoping for. But if there is mechanical failure, it would be now as they have won
their round and have their spot secure. When I talked to the crew chief Rodney Childers
about the mood this week he said it’s been loser. He said it’s like a fresh breath of
air. It kind of has me in panic mode. You spend a lot of nights lying away but this
week I got a lot of good sleep.>>He’s won his way through.
>>They were running well but they had this mechanical issue. No harm, no foul because
of the mechanical issue last week. But this team’s ability to win races when they need
to win races allows them to have bad races. That’s what they have. Sometimes they have
great wins but that’s because they had to have them. They dug themselves in a little
of a hole and they had to have those wins. They had a cushion to fall back on.
>>I brought it up moments ago, the fact of the matter that there are only six cars on
the lead lap is very special especially with the free pass and wave-around where teams
have the opportunity to get back a lap that they had lost. So you see more and more cars
on the lead lap. Well, that rule. The free pass rule was introduced actually in this
race back in 2003 and sense that race, the fewest on the lead lap at the end of a race
was five in the June race of 2004 at Dover. So five cars on the lead lap and it’s happened
at this racetrack back in 2004. The fewest cars on the lead lap.
>>Remember, that rule was put into place because you used to race back to the start/finish
line. The caution would come out, race to the start/finish line. Now you can’t do that.
>>Marty.>>Jimmie Johnson with his attempt as they
got the penalty for being over the wall too early. Maybe get the free parks get up there
and get a shot to get back in. The problem is that free pass scenario keeps changing
about every few laps. It seems like Jimmie Johnson was one spot behind. Now six cars
on the lead lap. That’s the problem for the 478. They’ve got four cars or three cars they
have to get around in to get that free pass. If you’re jacking out, how would you play
the race knowing you have a ton of speed but not a spot to win any locker.
>>Unfortunately Marty, I think you have to play the hand you’re dealt. Right now the
hand is not waning hand. I think the 48 has the speed to win but beaten down in the tenth
position, they need to move. A wave-around would be a major gamble. If
they didn’t get caution, they could risk losing more laps. You see the 28 above the cut line.
I this U you have to understand things didn’t go as well. It was a mistake. It wasn’t luck.
It was a mistake. Now they have to call the race in front of them.
>>25 laps until we’ll see green flag pit stops again and what will more than likely
be the last stops of the day.>>The beauty is martin true ek, as fast as
he is, he’s not going to stop early, six cars in the lead lap. There’s no need to take any
risk.>>There were only six cars on the lead lap.
If we do get a caution, then if you get a caution after that, there’s only six cars
on the lap. So there’s really no penalty if you’re running third or fourth to put tires
on. So, you know, that changes the way you can play your pit strategy with few cars on
the lead lap.>>Coming into this race, we knew that it
had to be miss steak-free. The 42 of Kyle Larson was right on the cut line with his
teammate Jamie Mcmurray and both have had issues today.
>>We all thought he would run well and he did have speed but he had an issue with the
batley. Had an electronic issue. Then the crew goes over to service the car. They start
with six guys, which is within the rules. One extra crew member highlighted. Steps over
the pit wall. That makes seven guys. That’s the penalty. They walk one lap. Then two more
laps serving that penalty. A little later, a cut right front tire. Basically doomed.
>>Then his teammates very early started talking about the vibration. Said he was down at least
one, maybe two. They contemplated bringing in the car to the garage, seeing if they could
do something before it blew up so ultimately it wouldn’t blow up. They weren’t able to
make that change. Now he’s out of the race and both of these teams most likely are not
going to transfer.>>Right now the 42 of Kyle Larson is being
scored six laps down. It is the third season in the chase. It’s the first time, though,
for both cars, and they will be disappointing for chip ganassi racing to not be able to
advance once again out at the first round.>>I say most likely just because one of the
things I learned about this format, never say never. Anything can happen, but certainly
with only a few laps left and as many laps as Kyle Larson is, six laps down, 61 laps
left, he’s going to gain those spots. There’s going have to be pretty crazy stuff happening
but he’ll have to have enough time.>>Martin Truex Jr. In front of Kyle Busch
by 9 1/2 seconds as we go NASCAR nonstop from Dover. If Carl wins today, I’m gonna do a
backflip. Maybe when you’re dreaming. Guys, I’m telling you, I can do a backflip. I’ve
seen Carl do it a million times. Well that’s neighborly. Enough. You’re good, man. That
is a banner. Hand me one of the wings? Uh, this one? Oh yeah, that’s good. Toyota. Let’s

at Dover.>>A little bit of a slow stop. 14 seconds. You’d like to see under 13. We’ll see if everyone
can be efficient with 42 to go. Dash.>>Tony Stewart is on pit road now under the
cut line. A lot of cars to pass if he’s going to advance to the next round. But the 14 car
hasn’t been to his liking parly today, so they’re going to have to make another judgment
on it here for him to get to the end. Looks like there’s going to be an air pressure adjustment.
It hasn’t been closely out of whack for Tony like it has been in practice. They made a
lot of adjustments. The gentleman is probably going to win his way to the round of 12 if
he can finish off the day. Here’s Austin Dillon. On his final stop. A little bit of a tight
race car for Austin late in the going.>>The chase drivers looking to advance into
into the round of 12. One of those being chase Elliott. Brad keselowski without a win. Looking
to advance. And the 41 of Kurt Busch also looking to advance. Marty?
>>Playing the game like they need to right now above the cut line. Looks like they’ll
make it to next round. Especially early in that run. He said, doing know where that speed
went. Late in the run, they didn’t have it. Kelli?
>>They tried to taten him up last time but he said it wasn’t the right kind of tight.
He said it’s still loose on gas on entry and then he gets tight at about the two-third
mark. They made adjustments and four tires and fuel, Dave.
>>>Nice catch on the tire there, by the way. Four-tire change, sunoco fuel and get him
on his way.>>Chase Elliott comes off pit road. Gone
a full cycle through. This is the second consecutive stop that have been under green flag conditions. The only three cars on the lead lap.
>>What this does is Jimmie Johnson is in fourth position a lap down but he’s in lap
position if a caution were to come out at the moment. Normally, Jeff, we see when one
car pits, they all come to pit road.>>78 doesn’t have to worry about anybody
else. He has a 12-second lead.>>Let’s talk about the strategy as we’re
now under 43 to go brought to you by smithfield foods. Can you overcome what martin Truex
Jr. Has done already.>>You absolutely can. You can have late restarts.
Know that you’re racing for points and recognize your mistakes. That’s what 48 is going to
try to do.>>Marty.
>>Stevens asked him a moment ago. We’re going to have a short run. Figure out what you want.
He said, I dodge know. Figure out,000 get rid of an 11-second deficit. For martin true
engs Jr., he said if anything the car is just a little bit tight. So Cole pearn makes the
call.>>Brad keselowski was reminded again and
again and again by Joey Meyer, no mistakes as he came down pit road. Four tires for Brad
keselowski. It was a little snug on this run. Makes it hard to turn in the center of the
corner. Also looking good in the point.>>Green flag, pit stops. No one wants to
be caught for speeding on pit road and nobody has as many times as Hamlin has this year.
>>Remember there were 25 speed penalties. In New Hampshire there were none.
>>Here comes 48. Making their way onto pit road. They definitely don’t want to have a speeding
penalty or any more problems as they have already put themselves in a little bit of
a hole, trying to dig out of it.>>Marty.
>>Rick, maybe to add a little salt to the wound for the 48 team, Johnson thrilled with
the race car right now. Calling for no changes on the car. They were in the free pass position
for the end of that run. They can come out and be in a free pass spot. Four fresh tires
for the car.>>Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards are 1-2 because
they have not come to pit road yet. They’ll be on pit road very shortly. The 23 getting
caught for speeding on pit road, so David Ragan gets pit road speeding penalty. Jeff
Gordon leading in the 88 but still has to come to pit road and will be doing so here
pretty soon as he sees chase Elliott go by.>>This team doesn’t have anything to lose.
They’re not raying for a championship. If they can stay out and try to catch a caution,
currently there’s only four cars on a lead lap to make something happen. Why not go for
it. Why not try something.>>Lap 277, already have completed 370. Just
over the pit window which we predicted earlier. Marty?
>>And, Rick, so far no move to pit road for Carl Edward. Dave Rogers told him a moment
ago we’re going to leave you out and see what happens. We’re going to take a caution before
we come to pit road. A bold move for a team trying to make it into the chase on points.
Carl Edwards. They’ve got to make it to the top like all the other leaders have already.
>>I like the strategy call. Just don’t put yourself into a mistake. Don’t
run out of fuel on the racetrack. No harm in staying out and attempting to win the race,
but make sure you don’t run out of fuel. It can be extremely worth it.
>>I don’t think it’s worth it. Why stand the chance of cutting a tire. What if you
have a tire problem. Remember what you’re doing. What you’re trying to do is advance
to the next round. There’s really no gain in doing this. It can help you, you know,
but it has way, way more chance of hurting you, so I’d be on pit road. I’m just a little
safer gambler than you are.>>I guess you’re cautious. We’ll call you
cautious Jeff as the 3 of Austin Dillon — again, Austin Dillon currently running ninth, one
lap down. Only six cars on the lead lap. That’s going to change again when Jeff Gordon and
Carl Edwards come to pit road. Kelli.>>Jeff Gordon comes down to pit road. He
said the car is a little bit tight once he gets to the center of the corner. He said
he needs to work on the entry of it but his exist off the turn is fine. You saw the adjustment.
It will also be four new good year tires and fuel.
>>Carl Edwards comes in. It’s going to br four fresh new tires. Been struggling on the
handle. Carl said they got a little too loose. Four new tires and air tire pressure adjustment
to get it better.>>They drop down to 12th and 13th respectively.
Martin Truex Jr. Back on point and a nine-second lead over Kyle Busch, about where it was when
these green flag pit stop. Chase Elliott running third. Another strong
performance for that young man. Brad keselowski and Matt Kenseth and Joey Logano, the only
other drivers on the lead lap. Really impressed by chase Elliott and what he’s been able to
do. Chase Elliott is going to advance. H ee is going to move on to the round of 12 and
keep his chase hopes alive as far as a championship.>>I thought what’s really impressive is remember
how fast this car was in Chicago? Everyone thought he was going to end up in victory
lane, late caution. Lots of stops. 78 beat him on pit road and 78 bite him in the race?
That could have easily derailed a young driver in chase Elliott, but instead he came focused,
stayed back, didn’t run great at New Hampshire, doing what he needs to do to advance. Really
needs to embrace, not like a 20-year-old young first-time rookie.
>>22 laps to go and it’s been a very impressive performance by martin Truex Jr. With those
22 laps go, he’ll end up leading with the most laps as he’s getting close to the 41
once again. Marty.>>Rick, what an amazing first round performance
it’s been for the 78 team. Here’s the scary thing. Next week at Charlotte, they’re bringing
the car that dominated the Coca-Cola 600 and the car also won at Chicago for martin Truex
Jr. I was talking to Truex about the final four and trying to make it to homestead, Miami,
this year. He said last year my mindset was try to make it to the final four and see if
we can make something happen. This year, my mindset is let’s not mess it up and win. No
doubt about it. Going into the chase, a lot of people thought the 78 would be addressed.
They may have set themselves up as the favored to win the title in 2016.
>>Well, when this team gets on a roll, you’d better watch out. They absolutely dominated Charlotte. They
LED 392 laps of the 400 at Charlotte. This team is going to have to consider — I don’t
know if you’re saying if they’re the favorite but they’re certainly one of the two or three
favorites to this championship. Toond avoid problems just like we’ve seen it by other
teams, but this team for sure has the speed to get it done.
>>Hey, look. I know the 78 has just, you know, unbelievable dominance. 184 laps. There’s
only six cars in the lead lap. When this team goes — look at Austin Dillon. Currently running
in the eighth position. We’ve seen cars cut tires. We saw the engine failure on the one.
He has an issue with four or five laps to go. He’ll miss the chase still. No guarantees.
All the drivers will smart and will have to finish this thing out.
>>Tony Stewart is one lap down, running 14th. Austin Dillon also a lap down running eighth.
But as you mentioned, if Austin Dillon has an issue, he could easily drop down to 18
or even further down. Take a look at the four first-time chase drivers. Chase Elliott, Chris
Buescher, Kyle Larson, and Austin Dillon. Out of this group, it looks as though two
will advance. Chase Elliott and Austin Dillon looking to make it into the round of 12 with
just 15 laps to go.>>I think that Austin Dillon and his team,
they had to feel really good about what they’ve done here today. This is a race when I talked
to him, he was more nervous about. He said I don’t know so much about Dover. In the first
round he felt good about Chicago and New Hampshire, was concerned coming into this race, but a
solid run. At times in this race, they had the fastest car, they never had the track
position to take advantage of it. If you had to take advantage of that, I think this team
has to leave this race with a lot of momentum and feeling really good about this next round.>Nonchasers. In the top ten, it’s just Jeff
Gordon. Kasey kahne running 12th. Aric amirola is 16. Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman, A.J. Allmendinger.
They’re all nonchasers.>>I think Jimmie Johnson is trying to prove
a point here, we’re never going to give up. ‘S consistently running better. The 48 is
trying to unlap himself here, currently in the seventh position, mind you, trying to
unlap himself.>>We talk about the lead pass. It’s a huge
lap from being one lap down and getting that free pass. When you get that free pass, you
have to start at the tail end of the longest line. If you’re back at a lead lap, if a carb
coming out and you’re pitting, you’re coming out. Anything can happen. So he’s pushing
it really hard right here to make something happen.
>>>>Longest green flag run. That will continue go up the track record. Not even close. 500
back in 1971. That record won’t be broken any time soon if they continue to run.
>>I appreciate that you ask me how that race was. The 14 not looking good. 11 points outside
of the chase. The round of 12. And this being the last opportunity for Tony Stewart to win
a championship in his final sprint cup series season.
>>I think it’s already been great that Tony Stewart was in the chase. Daytona in February. He wasn’t even in the
14 car. Had the back injury. No one knew how long he’d be out. He comes back, wins sonoma.
So while he doesn’t appear to have the great send-off that Jeff Gordon was lucky enough
to have by winning at martinsville, still a great chase in his career.
>>That win at sonoma was really energizing to everybody. Watching him have a chance to
win. He showed a lot of consistency and speed. Looked really good. Over the last month and
a half, they have not been able to bring the speed to the racetrack. Kind of the same as
his teammate. Kurt Busch has fallen into the sang them. Although Kevin Harvick has continued
on. Kurt has not.>>This is flashback to sonoma and the last
win for Tony Stewart when the 11 made a mistake. Denny Hamlin goes a little bit high and the
final turn. Tony Stewart takes advantage of it, makes the pass and takes the win. That
enabled him to to come back. You saw the fight of the driber
14. He’s always had is that. But it is said this will be his final season. Under five
laps go and right there is race leader martin Truex Jr. Coming into this season before the
start of the season, martin Truex Jr. Had three career wins. Three career wins. His
first career win came here at Dover. But starting this season. He’s looking as though he can
win. Now under four laps go at Dover. Martin Truex
Jr. Has put on a great performance. There are only three cars left in the lead laps.
The pace he set as well as what martin Truex Jr. Has done with his lead.
>>I think he found a good comfortable place to ride. Doesn’t want any part of that 19
or 22. With only two to go, I think that’s a wise decision.
>>I don’t think he was going to slow down enough to let the 48 go by. I think as much
as the 48 wants to prove a point, I think the 78 of martin Truex Jr., he wanted to prove
a point as well.>>Over 200 laps of green flag racing to end
this one as they come out of turn four. The white flag goes awn. Martin Truex Jr. Looking
for his fourth win of the 2016 season and his second win of the round of 16. Martin
Truex Jr. Has to solidify his position as the favorite for the 2016 championship as
he has dominated round number one and he’s dominated at Dover. He’ll win again!
>>Ooh, baby! Hell, yeah. We win, boyses. We win again. No mistakes. That’s all we needed
to do. Good job, man.>>Three of the last five races. When you
talk about momentum, this team definitely has it.
>>We’re going to victory lane. It’s over.>>You back to about two years ago when martin
Truex Jr. First started driving the 78 car. They did not run as well. There was a lot
of pressure on it. His girlfriend was diagnosed with cancer. A lot going on at the same time.
There were rumors he wasn’t going to be invited back. They got through that car and ever since
then, they’ve been exceptionally fast.>>I think the addition of Cole pearn as the
crew chief on the 78 team has really ramped things up for this organization. It just seems
as though martin Truex Jr. And Cole pearn click, they have figured out how to get the
most. Right now martin Truex Jr. Once again is celebrating at Dover international speedway.
The moment brought to you by sunoco, celebrating victories all season long.
>>Driving around. Lets the race fans feel it.
>>This is a good looking very class whether celebration.
>>Yeah.>>Kind of old school, isn’t it?
>>Yeah.>>The year. Think about the year. Martin
Truex Jr. Right now needs to be absorbing every second of it. Inches from winning the
daytona 500, dominates the Coca-Cola 600. Wins the southern 500. What could be the crown
jewel? Enter the NASCAR playoff and dominate this.
>>Here’s the statistic as he’s getting back to victory lane. He has LED more laps in the
last six races, again, the last six races, the laps he has LED, more than in each of
his prior seasons entering 2016, in his career.>>Very impressive. But next week it all starts
ore again, you know.>>Reset the points.
>>That’s right. Everybody enters next week with essentially
the same amount of points. You’re moving on but you’ve got to earn it again. No bonus
points transfer. Now everybody in the top 12 is equal and they’ll have to bring it again.
>>Take a look at the chase grid. The top 12 will advance. The drivers that won’t be
making their way into the round of 12 will be Tony Stewart in his final season with cup
series, Kyle Larson, first time making the chase, and it will end after the first round.
Jamie Mcmurray in his second chase. It ends after the round of 16 once again. And Chris
Buescher, really the Cinderella story of 2016 with his win at pocono, a single-car team
able to make it into the chase but won’t advance into the round of 12. You heard the fans cheering
as martin true E Jr. Flipped it around right in front of the grand stands on the front
stretch. Waiting to fire it back up and head back to victory lane, and that’s when we’ll
see him next. Practice went ok, but if he keeps pushing like that, what’re you gonna
do? Here we go. Can you feel it? The taste of Coca-Cola. Can
I get your autograph? Yeah, sure. I can’t wait to show my grandson.
Can you feel it? Life flavors the bolder. Like the taste of Coca-Cola. And you are the

>>>Coming up next it’s “NASCAR America” post race and then victory lap. Kevin Harvick,
even though he had trouble today at Dover, still a great story how he got to this point
in his career, his upbringing and his roots in the world of racing. Everyone checking
the lug nuts as he’ll make his way into victory lane once again. Again, the fourth time already
in 2016 when martin Truex Jr. Drove for Michael Waltrip racing, controversy at the end of
the season in Richmond, ended up losing a sponsor. It looks like martin Truex Jr. Was
on the outside of his racing career. Didn’t have a sponsor, no real ride to move forward
with and then furniture row racing came calling and gave him an opportunity. The first year,
a very difficult year for them at furniture row. But then things changed. Things clicked.
And now martin Truex Jr. Definitely in position to win his first ever championship in the
sprint cup series as he makes it back into victory lane once again.
>>Who would have guessed a team based in Denver, Colorado, could bring it every single
week and compete, you know, when this team was first started. Everybody would say it
will never work. It’s proved correct.>>Getting to be old hat for martin Truex
Jr. His girlfriend.>>Martin Truex Jr. Getting a world with Cole
pearn as he savors this hometown victory in front of the fans. He’s going to climb out. A little emotional
as well. Martin Truex Jr., a winner at Dover again. You can tell standing on the car, a
little extra, savoring the moment, looking at all the friends and family at victory lane.
It’s a packed victory lane. Martin, I’ve gotten to ask you, winning in Chicago, what kind
of statement has the team of 78 made in round one here?
>>We’re not messing around. I don’t know. What else can you say. We’re here to get it
done. Golly, I’m telling you, just the best crew there is. The best bunch of guys you
could ever ask for. It’s just amazing to drive the race cars and do what I that were able
to do. I’m just ecstatic. So many people to thank. Again, this is just unbelievable. I
don’t even know what to say. Especially here. I love this racetrack. It’s been, you know,
considered a home track for me for a long time. It’s been since ’07 since I won. A lot
of heartbreaking. All in all, a phenomenal race car. Furniture row, Denver mattress,
bass pro shops, auto-owners insurance, tex run, Oakley. Everybody who’s made this happen.
Barney, thank you. I haven’t seen him. Must not be here. Everybody back in Denver, furniture
row. Golly, man, I just — it just — I’ve about got to pinch myself. It’s unbelievable.
Thank you, sprint and the fans and everybody. What an awesome race. I’m ready to go to Charlotte.
>>You and I were talking. We said, listen, I have a better appreciate for it. How does
it make you appreciate what’s going on having been in situations where you weren’t as successful?
>>I can remember going home on days really frustrated, you know, here for example, running
up front, have something happen and watch Jimmie win ten of them and it’s like, man,
that’s got to be unbelievable to win that many races in a year or that many races, period. I mean the last month has just
— month and half has just been ridiculous. It’s just been a fairytale dream and all the
credit goes to these guys. The trv team. The engine guys. I thought I blew it up. The victory
lap was cool. That was for my buddy. He’s given me a lot of advice over the years, a
lot of support. It was cool to be able to do that. All in all, this is just a dream
come true. Gievet a lot of friends here, family here, a lot of people with our foundation
that came all the way from my hometown, 150 busted down here. They met them before the
race. They’re there with their martin Truex Jr. Towels washing as I went by. Just awesome.
Looking forward to it. Keeping this momentum going. The sky’s the limit for this team.
>>Rick, you can tell the hometown team mean as little more tore martin Truex Jr. This
afternoon.>>Absolutely. From the elation of victory
lane to the disappointment of chip ganassi. Had two cars in the chase both eliminated
in the first round. The round of 16 is as far as they have got in their title hunt.
And just moments ago Kyle Larson spoke with Mike ma sar Lowe.
>>Well, it certainly wasn’t the day that Kyle Larson was hoping for in Dover. An electrical
problem, a penalty on pit road. That seemed to seal your fate. What was the day like from
your perspective?>>Yeah. I don’t know what happened with the
battery. Lost power, lost laps. Had too many over the wall. Probe if we didn’t have too
many men over the wall, I probably would have been already. I was a lap down. But whatever.
Nice little Christmas present for Austin there, buy us both ganassi cars. Our Chevys have
been good every race. We’ll try. Even though we don’t have a shot,
fifth in points, we’re going to try to run it as far as we can.
>>Your first playoff experience, what might help you and the team be better next year?
>>I don’t know. Find some good Ju Ju. I had bad luck in Chicago. That right there. Today’s
bad luck. All the bad luck I’ve had in my career. Doing know what I’ve got to do. Stay
positive. We’ll come back next year and go for a championship. You know, our team came
a long way this year from where we started a season. So hats off to everybody on the
road crew. Hendrick engine, target, all the sponsors for all their hard work and effort.
Just didn’t have good luck again this year.>>Thanks for your time.
>>Yep.>>Not the day that Kyle Larson was hoping
for but certainly a season to be proud of thus far.
>>Absolutely. Got his first cup win. With we heard from his teammate Jamie Mcmurray,
he had an engine that expired, blew up early in the race, so Mike talked to him earlier,
but chip ganassi has to feel like the organization is headed in the right direction.
>>Yeah, but extremely disappointed. It’s hard to step back and feel good about anything.
You came in like you had a solid transfer to and you didn’t transfer any. It’s hard
to feel good about it. When they step back, they’ll realize they had made some gains.
The question is what did you learn to take take to the next season. Sometimes you don’t
learn but you’ve been there. You understand what it feels like. I think that is kind of
what you learn. Maybe not one specific thing but just that experience of being part of
it means something.>>Mike Massaro actually caught up with another
driver that doesn’t advance into the round of 12. Chris Buescher.
>>Chrisescher came in to Dover looking for a victory. That’s pretty much what it would have taken
to advance. He didn’t quite have the speed. What was the day like for you?
>>It was an interesting day. You know, the guys worked really hard, put the effort in
all year to be in this situation. You know, we had our heads held high. It was awesome
to be par of the chase. That being said, we wanted to move forward. We didn’t get the
opportunity. And the way the — to play out the way we needed it to, but, you know, with
these races, with these long green flag runs, we haven’t had a chance to work on it and
get it dialed in closer, especially to not get any practice in this weekend. It’s a tough
weekend from that aspect but the car droesh good at times. I’m just looking at the board
now, I can’t believe how many cars were on the lead lap. That’s a wild pace.
>>Talking to your crew chief, he said, whatever happens today, if we don’t advance to next
round, it’s still positive. We have something to build on. Dwlou feel about it?
>>The exact same. To have made it this far is a big deal for front row motorsports, the
small team, and this being my rookie season. These are a bunch of guys that are new to
each other for the most part. BOB’s a new crew chief for myself and both of us being
in the front row for the first time. There’s been a lot of changes. It’s not over. We have
a chance to go out here for seven more races and see what happens.
>>Thanks for your time.>>Thank you.
>>Great attitude. Chris Buescher still has snog accomplish in 2016.
>>Thanks, Mike. We’re still trying to track down and get to talk with Tony Stewart, the
other driver that will not advance into the round of 12. Obviously celebration continues
for martin Truex Jr. He’s getting used to this, being in the victory lane area and advancing.
Now it’s time for the post race show.>>Thank you, Rick.
>>>Yes, that celebration continues right behind us. We’re high above victory lane. Normally the race winner is the story. No
question any time you have a win, it is big. But today in an elimination race, which there
are three of them, the story is really about those four drivers whose championship hopes
are over.>>I think it is, but that’s the story we’ve
been talking about all week. You know going into an elimination race, you know four people
will leave the party and they left the party. The bigger story is how they left the party.
The other guy, the ganassi racing organization was eliminated because of errors and things
and failures.>>And we’ve talk about that. That’s how Yu
make it through these rounds is not to make any mistakes, not let things happen. Championship-caliber
teams overcome things and make sure that a lot of the little things don’t keep them from
advancing. They did that. Now I guess you’re saying they can relax until they get to talladega
for a little bit which is not the truth because they’re going to turn around and become pressured
coming at us. It was unfortunate but that’s what it does with everybody coming in. As
we talk about the four that were eliminated, we have to talk about the man that dominate
and that is martin Truex Jr.>>I have to say something. I think Chris
Buescher is just making this thing, huge, huge for that team. Ganassi putting two cars
in it this year compared to last year, that was big. Tony Stewart being in it theechb
last year to just have a shot, but I want go back on record and say they didn’t get
knocked out here. It’s a three-race round. Okay? They have three opportunities to make
something happen. They just couldn’t make something happen for those four teams in three
races and other teams did. It wasn’t how they did today. Let’s go back to Chicago. Let’s
go back to New Hampshire. It’s hue millive.>>They’re eliminated. What about a first time chaser. He talked
a few moments ago with Dave.>>A lot of speed we haven’t seen this afternoon.
>>Give all the glory to god first off. He really, you know, put this race in our hands
to giveaway. I’m proud of my team for building a fast race car. Rcr. Thank you, guys, for
working on this thing. Countless hours. We were able to make it to the next round. I’m
proud of all my guys. Thank you aaa, Dow, American ethanol.
>>What did you think?>>I don’t care as lock as we’re onto the
next round. It feels good. Now it’s time to knock some more of these guys out because
we’ve got this opportunity and we’re going to say we’re going to be ujds dog in the next
round. Let’s go do it.>>How do you press any harder. Org nice speed,
change pit crews. What do you do in round two in.
>>I think this was a great start. It was one of the fastest. I wanted to get more but
I knew what was at stake. I felt like I didn’t want to push it too hard. We probably could
have been a top five car pretty simply there. I didn’t want to hurt our chances.
>>Tempered his day but moved through. Austin Dillon off.
>>You skl see how pumped he is. He said a couple of things. Three races in the round,
he finished 16th at New Hampshire. Not a stellar day, but he was excited considering everything
they had to come back from.>>He was really excited. I want to start
with something he said. Does he not watch what we say and listen? He was the underdog
in this round an he has listened. I’m telling you guys, I ooh going to give them the back
bouns award, struggling through that race, that’s what put him in the hold, not Chicago. New Hampshire put them in a hold. I agree
with him. There was more this that car. If this had been a regular season race, we E
would have seen Austin up there contending for a win or a second or third. He drove smart,
did what he had to do today and he moved on. Whether it’s one or 11 like you said.
>>This is a driver right now that is exceeding the race car as far as what it’s capable of
doing. He did an outstanding job. They’re understanding the situation. Now they found
more speed here. They go to a couple of racetracks. He can get tone. Yeah, he might be the underdog,
but very capable of moving on because there’s nobody better at getting more out of a car
and not tearing equipment up as Austin Dillon does. That was an a outstanding job to come
here, understanding his job and coming here to make it happen.
>>If you go back to the beginning of the year or since NBC took over, pre-race, post
race, you heard us talk about most improved driver this year. He’s become a team leader.
I know Ryan Newman is there and Paul Menard and they’ve been there longer, but he has
taken the bull by the horns and he is absolutely steering that ship and he’s willing that car
and willing those guys to get better. This is the ascension, I think, of Austin Dillon
to that position over there.>>And Austin thanked someone else in that
interview, slugger. The crew chief slugger has a lot do with that. A veteran crew chief
who has sort of taken Austin under his wing and moved them up to the round of 12. We’re
going to hear from more of the drivers and we’re going to be with you until 7:00. A lot
more from Dover.>>>This copyrighted telecast may not be reproduced,
retransmitted or used any any form without thauthorized written support.>>>Welcome to the “NASCAR America” post race
show. Martin Truex Jr., the driver who finished first today. Presented by advance auto part.
Martin Truex and the 78 team continuing celebrate on victory lane. Let’s take a look at the
“Back on the road” moment and it belongs to the driver 24, chase Elliott. The youngest
driver in the round of 16 in the chase and he advances. He is moving on to the round
of 12. A first-timer in the chase, a rookie in the sprint cup series, not even old enough
legally to rent a car, yet he’s driving this car into the round of 12. There you see the
chase. This is how they finished. Now they will all be reset to begin at Charlotte. They’ll
all start with 3,000 points. There you see the drivers who were also eliminated. Tony
Stewart, Kyle Larson, Jamie Mcmurray, and Chris Buescher. Their chances are over. Chase
Elliott, just begin nothing that was pretty sporty for chase Elliott. What kind of burden
if anything were you carrying today at Dover wanting to advance or were you free whealing
it?>>We were trying to do our jobs not to overcomplicate
it. If you get too worried about where you have to finish or what you’ve got to do, sometimes
you can run there. Luckily for us, you know, that was — we just had a solid day. I think
that’s what we needed to do. The mountain dew group, proud to carry their colors for
them. Very cool brand. Excited to be part of it.
>>How much does that result increase your optimism for round two?
>>I’m really department. That I oar doing such a good job. The guys are unbelievable.
You couldn’t ask for a better guy on top of the box. I’m really proud of them. I think
we’re working our tails off to get to where we are. I think we even been building and
gaining on some things we’ve been missing and this is the time to do it.>>24 looking strong at the right time.
>>They most certainly are. A few moments ago, Kyle, you gave the bounceback award to
Austin Dillon. What are you giving chase Elliott?>>You know. I don’t know. What should I give
him. The pediatric award?>>Since he’s only 20.
>>Since he’s not graduated into the adult group? I don’t know. I think he undersells
himself. He’s so hard on himself when something happens. He undersold himself. They were eighth,
nintenth, eleventh, twelveth. Those guys are incredibly smart. They ee flying under the
radar. All we’re talking about is a rookie in the chase. What is he doing.
>>How is he competing with these guys. Age Weiss, that may be true. As far as experience,
who his old soul is and his dad and Dale junior and everything, he’s up from there.
>>Okay. He can’t buy beer legally and can’t rent a car. That doesn’t make any difference
from moving into the round of eight from this point forward. What they’ve given him is fast
race cars to drive and that’s all this young man needed. When Hendrick motorsports lost
a little bit and the Toyotas kind of took ore, we saw him struggle and I think that
that gave myself and others some reason to doubt whether he would be able to make it
out of this first round. They found that speed and he’s done an outstanding job in these
three races. I don’t think pressure is going to affect him. If they continue to give him
fast race cars H E has the ability and the -how to get it done.
>>I would not be surprised if he one one of these races in the chase or the next round.
Like you say, they give him the car. He’s been the bright spot of Hendrick motorsport
this year. I’ll tell you. He’s been the bright spot that’s
kept the guys going. Even though the 48 has won races, he’s outrun those guys. Junior
has had his issues. I think it’s been well documented. When you look at it, I think he’s
exactly right. Rick Hendrick knows how to pick them. Now, I’m going to go back to what
I said before. We used to have this say. We had a guy that worked with us. If this stuff
was easy, children would be doing it. Watch this. That kid’s doing it right there.
>>You guys bring up a great point. I know they’re all reseeded at 3,000 points. If you
look at the winnings, chase Elliott is huer than championship Brad keselowski, championship
Kurt Busch and champion Jimmie Johnson.>>He had somebody to teach him and he watched
growing up what his dad hall of famer has been able to do. He’s so much like him. The
temperament is there. We talk about him being hard. I think that’s going to serve him well
because he expects a lot. We can’t expect any more from him than he expects from himself.
When you’re in that situation as a competitor, that’s all you can do is give 100%. I think
a lot of that came from being around his dad and watching him perform. He’s so smooth like
him, it makes you understand why he’s going to win races and possibly contend for championships
for a long time to go.>>Maybe watching his dad and listening to
his mom is why he’s so good. When you look at it, he’s been given the opportunity and
he’s maximized that opportunity. Everywhere he’s been, whether it’s been the cars, late
model cars or getting in and winning a championship, he’s not let the people who believe in him
down. He believes in them. They believe in them. They believe in this
kid. That’s one thing that that team has. That believe continues to grow and blossom
week in and week out. You see it when he walks through the garage and in interviews. The
confidence. Yeah, he might get down on himself. But the confidence he has in them and they
in him continues to grow.>>We talk about it a lot. This next round
has been incredibly difficult. The way it’s set up, it gets more difficult each and every
time, but these next three races, you’ve got difficult tracks, 12 in the best businesses
that are going to be competing against each other, and, oh, yeah, they end it at talladega
trying to make it.>>I know. You have the mile and a half. And,
yes, talladega. The fact that tall gueida is an elimination race and we saw it last
year, anything can happen. We talk about this, Kyle. The start of the pre-race show. We’ve
never seen a year with more uncertainty at least heading into the elimination race. What
are we going to see next round?>>You know what? Talladega. It’s been an
elimination race. It’s just a wild-card race. You’re in this lane and it’s working and all
of a sudden you’re in this lane. You’re in somebody else’s accident. You cause an accident.
It’s a mental health game. We throw three tracks in this first round that are different
racetracks. When we go to New Hampshire and Chicago. Here, they’re cookie cutters. They’re
back to back. I understand the guys running a mile and a half. When we get to tall gueida,
we’ve seen it so many times. It’s anybody’s game.
>>We’re going to have two lucky drivers that when they show up to talladega, they don’t
have to worry about what happened there. That’s by winning at either Charlotte or Kansas in
the next two weeks.>>Can I address something. We’re on a horse
track. It was for harness racing. It’s not even ground.
6’2″, 6’2″, and I’m on the short end of things. And I’m in heels. Martin Truex is going to
join us when we come back. The winner in Dover. Oh, he’s already here. We’ll bring him over
when we return.we return So, how’s that medical thing going? Well, the doctor said… Sorry,
what? I said, the doctor told me… Excusez-moi? The doctor said… No more public pools for
me! Snap into a Slim Jim when Wendy’s remodeled their grilled chicken sandwich, marinating
the chicken lead to overhauling the bun with 7 grains and so on. And so on. Because Wendy’s
wouldn’t stop improving until the new grilled chicken sandwich was deliciously different.

my bottom line. What’s in your wallet?>>>There you see martin celebrating. Is there
something funny?>>No. Champagne good in his eyes. His champagne
dribbled out.>>You know this drill. We have talked with
you. I have something interesting. Did you know you won the last three races when Darlington
was canceled?>>There’s a good chance that a hurricane
is coming up the coast.>>I like it.
>>Charlotte, it’s probably going to rain.>>I don’t like that part. But for you, this
is complete domination, especially in the first round.
>>Yeah. It’s just been unbelievable. We worked toward this obviously all year long. Last
year we had a great season. We had goals coming into this year. A lot of things changed. You
know, we didn’t know how it was going to go. Golly, it’s just been — it’s been like a
fairy tale. It’s been amazing. All of our guys are amazing. I’m a lucky guy to drive
that every week and be part of the team and give my insight and information and they run
with it. Look what they do. It’s just — I’m just having a blast right now. We’re taking
it one race at a time. I know the pressure comes back next week and all that. But, man,
I mean this team is strong and they’re unbelievable.>>You know, you talk about that. You had
a great year last year. When you look at that year, you say, golly, what a good year. Everything
but a championship. You set your goals, switch manufacturers. Everything’s so different.
Did you have to temper those goals or say, well, it’s a manufactured thing, we’ve got
to start over from scratch. How did it work?>>When you beat your owner’s expectations
in the first ten races, you know you’re doing good. Barney thought it might take 10, 15
races you never know. Sometimes it takes a whole year. It’s the people. I’m a lucky benefactor.
>>I’m going to give you bad news over your good news. When you go to Charlotte, you can’t
lead by as many laps as you did back in may.>>That is a fact.
>>You’re going to lead a lot of them. Talk about the next couple. It couldn’t set up
any better with the two racetracks that you’ve LED many, many tracks.
>>Yeah, obviously we have a lot of confidence going in, Charlotte, Kansas City. Both tracks
we can win up front, we know we have a chance at winning. Talladega, we don’t want to go
there. We’re on the same page as everybody else. We’ll make sure we’re ready to go to
Charlotte. All we can do is go there and do the best job we can do. We’re going go there
with the same game plan as we did today. Everything’s going right. The team’s got confidence. They’re
on all the time. They’re hitting stops, they’ve got confidence.
They’re not making mistakes. Everybody is just doing their job. It’s a total team effort
to do like we did today. You know, did we have the best car? We were probably tied with
the 48 for the best car. He was strong. If he got out front, I don’t know that I could
have passed him. If he was behind me, he could have passed me. We didn’t make mistakes, we
made it happen and we capitalized.>>I want to bring up the 48 car. Made a mistake.
They get a lap down. But the last 10 or 15 lap, every time you looked in the mirror,
there he was. How hard did you drive the last 10 or 15 laps to keep him down so he wouldn’t
be back in the game.>>I ran my race. Honestly, I was running
pretty hard. I wasn’t run 1g 10. I was running 9%. I was making sure I was being smart, being
cautious, but still running as hard as I could. That’s where we ended up.
>>Martin, everybody is looking here in 2016 and saying, martin Truex, what a great driver
he’s become now, but I think many of us saw this years ago with XFINITY championships
and wins there and coming about and the difficulty of waiting for your time to come in the sprint
cup series. You mentioned watching others win a lot of races. Now you’re in that position.
Did you say this year, why not me, I might as well take advantage of this?
>>Yeah. Just rolling with it. You know, catching that wave and riding it all the way to shore.
Taking advantage of this opportunity because you never know when it’s going to end. You
never know how it’s going to work. Not only in racing but in life. You’ve about got to
enjoy the good times. We certainly are right now. I’ve had tough seasons. We’ve talked
about it. But it makes you feel so good when all those years you say, I know I can do this.
You have shining moments. You have moments where you show people that you can do it. Something happens to take it away from you.
It hurts so bad but you just keep fighting because you know that you can do it. And finally
people start to realize it when you get in a situation like this. This team’s incredible.
But you look at all the guys that have done this before me. They were incredible also.
So I’m just — I’ve got to pinch myself. It’s so fun. We have a chance to win literally
every weekend and it’s unbelievable.>>I want to go back to that. Last year Kevin
Harvick’s back was against the wall. He comes into the race. They win the race. I can’t
remember what they were chanting, what the team was chanting down there. You said something.
Is this the team motto? We’re here to get it done? That’s what you said. You said, we’re
here to get it done.>>These all we’re here for. What else are
we here for. The momentum. We’ve got everything it takes. It’s so hard to win a championship.
Dale know. You know because you’ve tried to win one. It’s so difficult and we feel like
we have that opportunity sitting there. Can we — can we grab it. Can we take it. We think
we can. But we’re going to find out in the next eight weeks.
>>Well, martin, congratulations.>>Good luck.
>>We asked you when you were here after your win in chicagoland, I said Charlotte was redemption.
This was a statement for that 78 team.>>Definitely, definitely.
>>Yeah, I think it was based on how it was a total team effort throughout the weekend.
We had confidence. Yesterday at practice, I think we ran 12 laps but we knew those 12
laps didn’t mean anything, but we went with our gut. We reached back into the locker from
last time, the notes from last time and put in what we thought was going to work today,
not yesterday, and we had a great car all day long. Congratulations on your shining moment.
>>Thank you.>>Thank you very much.
