One to One Annual Fund: The Road to Independence

In our society, whether it’s Maine or the U.S., we measure the independence by the ability to come
and go, where ever, when ever you want and that’s the difference between having your own
vehicle and not having your own vehicle and why it’s so critically important to many people with disabilities to drive themselves to what they want to do. This is our first fundraiser in over 30 years And the reason it has take us so long
is because we promote independent living and the dignity of people with disabilities we have always been reluctant to conduct fund-raising activities that would put people in a negative light. That they are objects of pity or people that
need to be taken care of That’s not the message that we are trying to get across around disability but we feel as if we have come up with the right
approach to that without having to go in that direction. For many years we have been looking for a way
to our original van that we used for evaluations, assessments, and peoples abilities ability to drive and we’ve looked at grants and looked at various resources and we just have never been able to find the right
vehicle, if you will, for raising that kind of money. Driving has been everything for me in terms of success and I hope and wish that for anyone else who
wants to move forward in their life anyone else with a disability who want to work,
live where ever they choose to live and enjoy a full and productive life.
