The Besos River study will be in Montcada i Reixac which is a city in the surroundings of Barcelona, actually in a neighborhood called La Ribera which is a socio-economically deprived neighbourhood The aim of this study is to investigate whether changes in the accessibility to blue space, in this case the river will affect the health and well-being of the citizens of this neighbourhood. The intervention will be performed by the municipality together with Consorci del Besòs and metropolitan area of Barcelona and now what’s happening well before the intervention there was not access to the river so people could not going into the river but they could also see it from the road and now what they’re doing is to provide some stairs and some slopes which make access to the river for the local citizens and they are also constructing a path for bikes and pedestrians which will be useful for them to cycle or walk along. So what we are going to do is not only to assess which is the use of this space and how this use has changed before and after the intervention. Moreover as we’re also performing some in-depth interviews with some of the citizens what we are asking them is if they know about this intervention but we are not apushing them to use it. Actually I’m very excited about this project because I think blue spaces are a potential that we have in our countries but most of the time we don’t use it or we are not aware of the benefits. Small interventions like making access to this river could be very beneficial for the health and well-being of the population.
