Can't be fixed, you've gone past the point and into hyper-capitalism whose main fuel is GREED. Corporations and the Uber-rich do not view the country as sacred nor do they view the average citizen as whole. They are 2-dimensional sources of revenue who must be controlled. This may be the source of your next civil war. Sooner or later you run out of distractions and people wake up. People online talk of existence as a simulation, you're already there. American capitalism has become a pyramid scheme, with a guy named Ponzi running it. When your core governing mechanism, the White House has 5 or 6 billionaires and an assorted number of millionaires running the show you know something has gone horribly wrong.

One day if, Americans have the opportunity, before it's too late and lobbyists and big money donors that control the government are shown the door, the country will thrive and control will be where it needs to be.

Step 1: Get rid of all these “legal” offshore tax dodger accounts used by the super rich to cheat the government and the middle class by not contributing. Step 2: Put the illegal Step 1 cheaters in jail, and recover the money.Step 3: Close the tax law loopholes that allow the 1% to hide their money offshore, tax free.Step 4: Shut down Delaware’s onshore corporate tax haven charade.

Who did this brilliantly?  FDR, a rich guy, who was not interested in seeing capitalism either morphing into rightwing authoritarianism as it did in Germany, or producing a backlash leading to a communist dictatorship, as it did in Russia, either of which could have happened in the US during the Depression, so hopeless were most Americans, even those hanging on to jobs, with a 25% unemployment rate across the land with no solution in sight.  FDR saw another way, as his 5th cousin had: support and save the capitalist system from itself, from the excesses that Marx had predicted, given unbridled capitalism, by reining in the excesses and starting what we today call the "safety net" for those who need it. While WWII actually lifted the country out of the Depression into an amazing and long economic growth spurt, FDR set us on a practical course (and big business survived very nicely, thank you) that kept us optimistic about the future, and hence wedded to the system for about 50 years.  Don't destroy the capitalists, set limits on them.  Don't control the lives of the people: help them.  Is that not what the government of a civilized nation is for?  To make whatever system the people have chosen work?  You don't let a fine old watch that has popped a spring (watch? spring?  OK, I'm old.)  run erratically, but you replace or improve on the spring.  You don't smash the whole watch in a tantrum because part of it isn't working. You make it work better. That is something the Chinese communists today are doing much better than the Chinese communists in the era of Mao or all the leaders of those Eastern European and Soviet workers' "paradises" did, or frankly, than Pres. Putin is doing in his country right now.  There is no reason why American leaders cannot be skillful in setting limits without stifling economic growth and helping without making the majority of Americans permanently dependent on a government handout.  Prof. Reich's suggestion of "reemployment insurance" is excellent.  Done the right way, it benefits both business and American workers.  There's a start.  Finally, in the end, some way must be found to make politicians less beholden to big money, wherever it comes from, as Prof. Reich rightly insists.  I share Heidi's skepticism that this Congress or any likely Congress  in the next twenty years whose members benefit by courting big money (by which time something awful will have happened to our nation if we don't get back on course) will pass campaign finance reform and have it upheld by the Court, but this past Tuesday showed us that voters are capable of ignoring the propaganda that big money buys and voting not for the person with the most or most negative commercials, not for the person getting the most positive responses on line (which could be fake and from Russia or who knows where), but the person they conclude on their own is best for the job.  We the People can take that step without Congress, the Court, the president or anyone else telling us to.  Nullify to the greatest extent possible the benefits big money affords the politicians in the next election and they won't be seeking the big money any more because it will be a waste of time and effort to do so. Shall we?

Capitalism can't and shouldn't be saved – I can't say this with any more conviction. This bit is disappointing coming from Robert Reich; I fully disagree with him on this. :/

We need to be working to make currency and all its corruptable systems unnecesary all together. Several hurdles stand in the way: theocracies, oligarchies, opposition to a global society, and nationalism, to name a few.

Why should we do this? Because slavery has evolved and wrapped itself around modern economic systems, such as capitalism, in order to continue the lineage of power hungry people playing the great game of war and acquisition – which will inevitably result in the death of us all or potentially everyone but a few. We may have less than 20 years until technology makes a population obsolete to do the bidding of these people, and at that point they may wield the technology they've always wanted – the game will be won.

Our economic systems and currencies ensure the production and acquisition of power for the few, made by the many. Robert Reich is basically perpetuating this in this 'skit' and it makes me ill. We will never be allowed to wield technology that will free us from this slavery unless we abandon the systems that keep us shackled. Currently, we seem too stupid to understand we are slaves, especially when our 'brightest' is telling us to keep our shackles on, and that doesn't make the future look too bright, especially when we're all still acting so tribal towards each other on lesser issues.

The game is rigged and always has been. That's not a bug, it's a feature. We're all going down unless we face some hard truths. We must make some significant changes to how we live on this planet with an emphasis on individual rights and sustainability, instead of the opposite (which is profitable for the few).

For me, and probably many others, we end up just profitting off what is essentially waste because it's all we can do in this economic system. Might make a dent here and there in improving lives for others, but it means nothing while we are ultimately enslaved to destroy ourselves so few others(at best) will enjoy the next era of whatever we'll call life.

Well, I've had enough. Humanity and life on this planet has had enough. No, I won't be forced to work and pay taxes, I wont stand for a flag that forces me so. I will cooperate with all others around the world to create what is neccesary to free ourselves and sustainably live by our own accord without affecting anyone else negatively; it's what we all deserve. The coming technological revolution must be available to us all, and the dismantling of systems keeping it from people needs to begin now so we can finally all live in our own peace without dependence.

    Here's how you fix capitalism.
You set a salary cap for all and deliver higher wages to the middle class, allowing them to spend more, generating a broad and permanent stimulus to the economy.
Everybody's better off except the CEOs and Bankers draining the economy of wealth which could be spread further to the benefit of all, including the companies some of these greedy CEOs control.
If the income gap and the resentment it creates continues to grow it can only end one way……Revolution.

I have a thought. How about we take those companies that pay so little that their employees have to access help for food, housing, and healthcare and make them pay for those programs to include the administration costs? How 'bout that? Then at least we wouldn't have to pay the taxes to support those programs and eventually the Walmarts, McDonald's and such will figure out that it is less expensive for them to pay their workers a living wage.

Citizen activism? Is that supposed to be a joke? Citizens can't even be bothered to get out and vote. Their idea of activism is posting on a blog or having a camp out with their friends so that they can feel better about themselves. And the moment better health care or any better service would require rising taxes, everyone who flock back to the republicans. Because nothing demonstrates the American spirit more then wanting things but wanting to pay for them.

When the Republicans talk about winning, they aren't joking around. People were so proud they protested the travel ban. And it eventually went through. the EPA is dead, they are dismantling the affordable care act, the new budget is giving away huge tax breaks to the super rich. How aren't they winning?

Hows your protesting working? Hows your blogging on sites working?

America is no longer a capitalist economy. It could however be called a Corporate Socialist Economy, where the major corporations use public money to further their own needs. Or it could be called a Uriah Heep economy where a few have surreptitiously taken over what does not belong to them. America is rapidly moving towards a situation where a few unelected people control all the assets of the country and expect the majority to help fund their lifestyle. The Revolutionary War was fought to through off a few wealthy individuals who tried to dictate to the populous how things should be. American society has now replaced a few from the UK with a few home grown who would oppress them.

How can big money be excised from our government when the Supreme Court has turned a blind eye to it, in fact, they have affirmed the role of big money? Republicans are totally blind to the needs of the people, especially when they think that people want their money going to the wealthy and huge tax breaks for big corporations. The small businesspersons need the tax breaks, not large corporations. Middle-voters class families spend their money which boosts the economy and the voters need to make it clear to these politicians that they will not be re-elected if they pass this toxic bill. Big money needs to crash and burn!!!

Yes is Amazing…. We need health care for all, living wage no less than $ 18.00 but $15.00 would be great start. We need to take back production of all our own products "all", bring all call center's back which would itself create over two million Job's. Buy American product's only. Then raise corporate tax up to 50% yes that's right for after deduction they would be about 16.7% for those who pay many lie pay none. Just like people raise taxes on household making a million or more, higher after making five, 10 and do so. This will bring back middle Americans who in fact could become millionaires as well.
Cut all money out of Politics as Bernie raises his own money so should all who are running for office and cap at $10 M.

Capitalism is only ethical if things needed for survival are taken out of it. If there is scarceness in resources needed for survival, there will be competition, and a significant increase in crime. Than in a capitalist society such as the USA privatize prisons and you get institutions that florish by the number of inmates they house. Another recipe for disaster, crimes & regulations.
Law should be there to make life fair.
Where is fairness when some take all the cake only leaving crumbs for the rest, and if they are allowed to do so by law, where's the justice in that. A CEO might work hard, but he does not work harder than 3 low-ranking workers do. Why shoule he earn 100 times more ? Without the workforce, the CEO will be completely useless. In effect the CEO is there to streamline production, which will increase the profits, but in essence he/she is overhead, just as the PA, accountant etc. Now if a company earns money, tencency is to first pay the people on top. If all companies do that, the CEO's can cosy up and make deals, making them "generating" even more profit. The people at the top only give enough to keep people moderately happy, or at least subdued enough to not have them rebel, and skim off the rest, in essence generating a scarceness of money which is needed for survival.
Make people afraid they lose their job if they complain. Have them plunge themselves in debt too, so they can be forced to pay off, by law, and there you have slavery 2.0.

Americans will never get out of this revolving one sided system..much like a mobius strip. You keep replacing democracy with capitalism. They aren't the same. Capitalism is great, but it isn't a system to govern, it's an economic system. You keep allowing corporations to have a say in policy, you will continue down this rabbit hole to being a banana republic.

Any tax cut is a stimulus. The last thing than an economy at 3% growth and 5% unemployment needs is a massive round of stimulus. It would only lead to inflation and asset price bubbles. Now's the time to keep reducing the deficit and to let interest rates rise slowly so people can get some returns on their savings. From an economist's point of view, tax cuts now make no sense. A move that would make sense is a budget neutral tax reform, aiming at creating growth through simplifying the tax code to make things easier for small businesses, entrepreneurs and investors.
