Sci-Fi Short Film “Colony” presented by DUST

(waves crashing) – Remembering my life and how things were is
like trying to hold water. But some things leave a stain. The year was 2131 when we
traveled to the colony. (anxious violin tones) After the war, we had nothing. So five years of labor for a home seemed like a pretty good deal. My sister and I were taken to a planet that they named Heaven. I hoped that the clean air
might help heal her lungs. (coughing) And I thought that if we could just push through, they’d let us live. (anxious violin music) We were all human, after all. (fearful breathing) Seren, you should eat something. – Rhian, it’s yours, you eat it. – You need to eat. – You waste it on her. – Take it, then. – They shouldn’t have been
allowed on board the ship. Only fit and healthy workers. I left my child on earth. But that one there, she’s
been sick since they got here. – Leave it. (anxious deep violin tones) (waves crashing) Well? – You’re late. – Yeah, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. – [Officer] Here. – Thanks. – Your skin’s getting worse.
– Yeah. Pretty soon you won’t want
to come meet me anymore. – We’ll just meet later when it’s very dark. You smell disgusting, go wash yourself. – Do you have access to
any kind of medicine? – For your skin? – No, it’s my sister, she’s, she’s sick and she’s just getting worse and if you have access to any, she’s not– – I’ll see what I can do. – Okay. (whispering) (deep violin tones) Seren. – Hmm? – [Rhian] I brought you some food. – I don’t want it. – [Rhian] You need to eat it. – [Seren] I’m not hungry. – How can you not be hungry? You haven’t eaten in three days. – Because I know what
you had to do for it. – [Rhian] All right, sit up. – You don’t understand,
every time you go out there– – Shh, check your voice.
– I don’t know if you’re coming back and–
– Be still. You don’t want everyone to hear, okay? Just keep your voice down. – I don’t trust them. – What if I can get you medicine? – What if you can’t? – What else am I supposed to do? – Stay with me. (anxious deep violin music) – [Unknown Voice] Rhian, stay with me. (coughing) – No, no, no, Seren, Seren. Get up. Seren. Seren. It’s okay. It’s all right, just
let me hold you, okay? She’s okay. She’s just got some petal
eyes in her nose, she’s fine. She’s fine. (alarm blaring) You’re okay. You’re okay. (low, anxious violin tones) – [Officer] Here. – Where’s the medicine? – An apple today. Maybe tomorrow. – No, no, no, but you said
you could get medicine. You said you could get fucking medicine! – I said I’d see what I could do. Isn’t that enough for you? – [Rhian] I’m sorry. – I have always done
what I can to help you. You think this is fuckin’ easy for me? – Sorry. – You think I can fuckin’ walk in there, you think this is my fuckin’–
– I’m sorry, I’m sorry! (tense rising tones) (Rhian weeping) – [Officer] When you talk to me like that, it makes me think, what’s the point? (anxious electronic tones) (water sloshing) (anxious rattling tones) (Rhian grunting) – [Unknown Voice] Rian. (anxious electronic tones) I see you. (whispering) I feel what you feel. I lost my family too. If you stay with me, I can heal you. I can change you. We can save her. I was murdered, Rhian, just like you. (screeching) – Seren. Seren? Seren, wake up. No, no, Seren, wake up. Wake up. (gasping)
(coughing) Last night, there was
something in the water. It was on my leg and the blood and… – It’s an apple.
– Yeah. But it was better. You know? It was a fresh one, it was, it was like the ones we
used to have, you know? – It’s okay. – [Seren] It really was a better one. (anxious electronic tones) – [Officer] Tomorrow,
bring me your sister. – You have the medicine? (anxious violin music) One day, people are gonna
talk about us, you know? As the founders of Heaven. – No, they won’t. We’ll be left out of the story. – Well, I guess we’re just gonna have to write our own
history then, aren’t we? (coughing) – [Seren] Who would read? – [Rhian] Seren, get down. – What? What is it? – Nothing, it’s fine, okay? Just stay here. It’s fine.
– Wait, no. Rhian, stop. (catcall whistling) – Where’s your sister? – [Rhian] Where’s the medicine? – What medicine? What’s she talking about? – [Officer] I don’t know
what she’s talking about. – Ooh, they all smell of shit. I’ll have to hold my nose. – There never was any, was there? – [Officer] Where’s your sister? – She couldn’t make it down the cliffs. – Ah, come on, don’t lie to us. We’re here to help you. – Get the fuck off me.
– Oh, ho, ho. (groaning) Hey, come back. – [Officer] Fuck! (screaming) (thudding) Get off her. (grunting) – [Unknown Voice] Rian. (whispering) Stay with me. – [Officer] Get off of her. (anxious violin, electronic music) (rattling tones) – [Rhian] I was given the
chance to start again. The chance to save a life. (thunder booming) Things are different now but the past is never quite washed clean. They won’t remember our names
but they will remember me. (tense rising ensemble tones) (whispering) (relaxed electronic music)

She may have had bad skin which didn't get cured; but whatever it was lived in the water gave her a great set of newish looking teeth.

First short film on Dust that's made me want to leave a negative comment, such a slow (mildly interesting) build up to a 2 second wasteful ending.

Especially with DUST, I always read the comments before watching… spoiler alert, rofl — 70% of the viewers are like – 'awesome, where's the full movie??' 25% are like – 'ouch DUST, yet another painful cliffhanger, come on now' and 5% are basically ' well that was a waste of time'… no matter the outcome, or how much we continue to torture ourselves with your short films, we still love them….So, for this particular one, I was leary from just reading the comments… (now to watch, yes I am beginning to writing this comment before I actually watch it)… watched it so first off, any comments about 'how can a space faring civilization have such backwater conditions for their colonies??' I refer to Firefly, Dragon Riders of Pern, need I go on… second, EXCELLENT!! Nice plot twist at the end, so I am in the percentage of 'where's the full movie???' EDIT so many people complaining about the drop off ending, that's DUST people. Don't watch DUST if you can't handle cliffhanger endings. Yes I have said 'you suck' when seeing cliffhanger endings, but still, they're good.

Impressive short. About the ending….im not sure if the main actor was killed, then found herself standing up the beach watching her lifeless body get dragged away and then the sick sister healed herself in the water (not shown)and is ready to take revenge. Or the sick sister was killed (even though we never saw her come down to the other three), then the main character changes herself by the water alien and seeks revenge
The first one makes more sense i think? In the last shot her face is too dark to see which sister it is.

So basically, there was evil at work in the water, on Mars, or wherever they are, and this evil entity tried & succeeded in making Rian think that there was something good in the water that was… Well, righteous, healing, and quite the opposite of evil. Apparently she was mistaken. The evil entity did finally trick her into succumbing to it by drowning in the water and ultimately selling her soul to exact revenge on those who we're in charge of the colony, and most likely captured and made slaves of her, her sister, & the others!

Great film, however it seems like it should be longer. It could definitely be made into a show rivaling other multiple year shows.

These endings are left for open and creative minds. People who need every detail laid out in blazing action and color aren't going to be happy with these short films. They can't or won't use their imagination to take the ending where it could possibly go. Which could make the comment section very interesting then with all the ways it could go.

Slave labor, all women slave labor. Why weren't men brought to the planet? What was the purpose of bringing woman only if they were going to be treated as less than a living organism?

It was a surprise when something visibly happened to her leg only to be healed by the next day. Did that creature have something to do with it or was the light it emitted it's way of attracting prey. The voice the woman heard showed a intelligent life existed just maybe not as she would recognize.

The sister smacks that one guy in the head with a sizable rock and he doesn't go down for the count? Or when the same guy gets a foot to his jewels and THAT doesn't find him in a heap because of the pain? Jewels getting a solid foot do not allow a guy to do anything more then revel in a lot of pain.

Once again Dust lets the viewer decide how the movie actually ended, but given that she watched the murder of her sister and how she'd been treated as a piece of meat, it was hard to figure out how she was going to end the women's suffering. Starting with the pig who killed her sister.

all those sniping about the ending are not really seeing the piranha was there to see, the wound on her leg was the doorway to fusion and the rage and heartbreak for her sister and stolen future was the catalyst to bring fury on the rest of the colony who hated them and the sadistic guards, a new hybrid race will form and she was eve.

The dark ages will return…we have not learned from our predecessors…. i.e. the Romans, the Greeks, the Egyptians, all thought their existence was permanent…that’s where we are now…we think this life is permanent but have we learned? Nothing stays the same and all civilizations fall…enjoy everyone…

I greatly enjoyed does movies. Short to the point stories.

If I might give to feedback points on this one to the writer / director:

    1) people with long hair would have it pulled back, tied up when working;

    2) Planting trees is done very differently and more efficiently – something worth seeing before you make a movie like this so you have an idea of how it’s done.

    Keep up the good work.

You had some really good ideas and the acting was good. But the lack of agricultural tech for a space-faring population makes no sense. Unless the defeated laborers were simply being punished by the vicious guards out of pure spite. You needed more build-up if that ending was going to make more sense. But it was interesting.

I had recently watched many different films on DUST and unfortunatelly this one is not only one of the worst but it fact it is the worst I have seen here. You may ask why? Only because it was lost potential.

So thy have space travel, but no showers? And no farming equipment like tractors? And no medicine? And not proper housing but silly tents? Bullshit story….
So they reverted to farming like in the stone age where one "farmer" could support maybe 1-2 other people whereas today a modern farmer feeds 1000+ people…

"Happy endings are a matter of perception.
♡ Why remain to live as sub human when it's possible to become meta human?
♡ Isn't that the dream to never be alone again?
~Well anyways… New adventures await, after revenge of course. See y'all real soon.😈"

You can always tell which ones were written by feminists. Isn't it ironic that some version of this is always their fantasy? Handmaid's Tale, etc, etc, etc, over and over, and over again forever. Dark fantasy but still. There's some deep identification with being abused sex slaves, like a need. Because I mean, that's not reality. But it's in all their fantasies. That's never men's fantasies.
In a male fantasy, a woman might be about to get eaten by a monster and need to get rescued, and then she falls in love with her hero. But none of this type of shit. It's always from women. I'm gonna go watch the credits to see…

SPOILER – WATCH BEFORE YOU READ

Shades of David Weber and 'In Fury Born"(?)… But very limited in capability to finish a story or close out the plot in a realistic manner.. Sorry but this had been done better in that book…

Transformation of her body when entity was living in her and survivingtalking with her – (changing her face (only?)) is very superfluous to gaining strength, power and revenge…

Is it cost effective to transport people between planets only to use them for stoop-labour? They'd probably eat more than they grew.

Also, check the Roche limit on that large moon.
