Sexual Respect & Community Citizenship Initiative: Arts Option

Sexual Respect & Community Citizenship Initiative: Arts Option

Columbia University has launched a new,
campus-wide initiative that encourages all of us to engage in
honest, in-depth exchange about what it means to
be a citizen of our community. This semester, we will focus on the ways
in which sexual respect is inseparable from membership in that
community. This is an opportunity to create art about the connection between sexual
respect and membership in the Columbia University community. We invite students to submit creative
works in dance, video, theater, painting, music, visual arts, poetry, photography, prose, or performing arts. Everything we do is
related to creating a culture of community: one
which we can be proud of, in which we can learn, and in which we
can contribute to society. We invite you to express your thoughts
and feelings about sexual respect: concepts like consent, relationships, boundaries. This initiative was designed by students, faculty, and
administrators across Columbia. We encourage the expression of all identities, genders, sexual orientations, races and
ethnicities, religions. To view the guidelines for
submitting work, go to courseworks.columbia.edu. All submissions are due by Friday, March 13th. We’ll have an opportunity to display our
finished work on our website. Selected work will be exhibited at a
community event in April. Your inspiring works will help us
strengthen a culture of sexual respect and community
here at Columbia. I invite all of you to participate and to be
creative in this initiative.
