Shadow: NYC Teen Shadows a Human Rights Lawyer for a Day [Law Careers]

Wassup? I’m Jeremiah, and I’m 16, and this is my city. Jersey City. And this is my people. This is Nuvani, Andy, and Jayden. Yurt? You’re supposed to yurt back. Yurt? All right. I never told you I really want to be a lawyer. Nah, you never told me. You really wanna be a lawyer? Oh yeah. You wanna be a lawyer? I’ve thought about it. Akila, nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. I’m the president of the Global Justice Center, so I’m an international human rights lawyer. And I do mostly work on women’s rights. What makes you think you wanna be a lawyer? I’m really good at debates. I like hearing about different people opinions on different topics. And you’re on the debate team right now in school? We do a mock trial, so we’ll have different cases, and then we’ll go down to the courthouse and argue our point to the judge. So when did you know that you wanted to do stuff like this? I did debate in high school. So we’ve got some similarities there. We did something called Model UN in college, which is a lot like mock trial, except it’s Mock UN. Do you know what you think you wanna study? Probably psychology. If you want to be a lawyer, take classes in college that teach you how to think analytically. And psychology is a great major for that. So what are some of the things that stands about your week? Meetings. So many meetings. So I have a draft of the letter to Agent Jasselson. Give it to Michelle this afternoon. There’s nothing more important as a lawyer than being a good writer. Yeah. So that’s probably 90% of our day. What’s your favorite thing about your job? The R6 classes are small, but they’re gonna add up, and they’re going to make the world a better place. What was most impressive about Akila is how she’s so passionate about what she does. What interests you? I don’t think anyone should be treated differently just because of their gender or race. So what do you think you wanna do for your community? Yeah, I’m not sure yet, but I do wanna give back. I’m gonna try to do internships, work with other lawyers, read more, and write more. When you’re a lawyer, bro, you’re never gonna be able to pop out, bro. You’re gonna have to wear the suits. You ain’t tell me you wanna be a lawyer. What do you wanna be?

You don't have to be anything but you can be anything. Remember that. This kid will dig a deep hole of debts but it will be worth it cuz lawyers still get paid whether they lose or win a case.
