SpawningGBR 2019

coral spawning is basically at the time when corals actually release all their eggs and sperm and because they’re kind of at the mercy of the water currents they don’t really want to kind of do it willy-nilly so like a couple happen this night or a couple happen that night so what they decide to do is they pretty well now more than 50% of your corals all decide to release their eggs and sperm in one big, massive broadcast, synchronized event Ah, what it kind of looks like? It comes out in various sizes generally larger colonies they have little packets of bundles nice and pink so often in the morning you might see like a pink slick right across the surface What happens after coral spawning is the eggs and sperm float to the sea surface and form a slick and what we’re doing with this project is capturing part of that slick growing millions of larvae in floating nursery pools and when they’re ready after five days to settle we’re putting them back onto damaged parts of the reef to kick-start the recovery of the coral community which creates the foundation of the reef system. By fast-tracking this process and giving the larvae a boost we provide them with new energy – new energy sources that enable them to survive for longer and hopefully survive the ever-increasingly stressful environment of our reef waters The reef is by no means dead it is a nuanced story and one very difficult to tell we have an amazing amount of biodiversity still out here that we rely on to have a success in this project so we are harnessing those corals that are incredibly healthy and doing well out there there are also areas that are incredibly degraded and they are not ever going to necessarily go back to where they were without significant action on climate change. And you can see how amazing this place really is and how alive it looks totally inspiring. And we want the Great Barrier Reef not just to be a poster child for climate change but to be the inspiration for change. Because it’ll be a global response that keeps a place like this looking as amazing as it does.
