Star Citizen | New Flight Model

Star Citizen | New Flight Model

hello and welcome to some more star service and today looking at the planned updates to the new flight model as quickly as possible the new flight model is a total overhaul of the system and the changes we’ll see every ship significantly change players will really fill their ship thrusters and changes to their ship and how its flying during flight and this will be significantly different in space than it will be an atmosphere the new flight model is a unified system that doesn’t have specific modes for precision SCM or cruise instead you have various control mechanisms to adjust your speed and sensitivity the throttle so now when you stop for tling or so stopped pressing w as default you stop accelerating but you keep your current velocity coupled while in coupled mode your ship will try to reach a target velocity in the direction you’re facing with velocity control you can set a target speed which your ship will try to maintain there will be retro thrusters that act as a space brake as well that’s how you stop now the coupled mode will allow you to freely rotate around while retaining your velocity but it will also allow you to move more freely in any direction with the appropriate thrusters giving you acceleration acceleration control this limits the amount of thrust the ifcs system can use allowing you to accelerate more precisely if required you can set this to lower than maximum basically and have your own precision mode if you wanted afterburner the old boost is now afterburner and the old afterburner is gone so afterburners now give you an acceleration boost they do not increase your top speed top speeds you can now go as fast as you want up to your top speed which is basically what cruise speeds were before the faster you go beyond what would have been your SCM top speed though the less control and agility and maneuvering you have you do not need to use afterburner to get up to your top speed nor will turning your ship just immediately pull you out and drastically lower your current speed like it did before you can toggle an SCM limiter this will basically allow your ship to stay in its high speed that it can while still having full maneuver and control its sem speeds that we’ve previously had in star solisten thrusters work independently of each other during power and fuel from your ship you will still be able to change power settings and overclock them managing thruster heat is going to be key to stealth gameplay as thrusters where they may misfire and become unreliable a damaged wall or destroyed thruster will affect the way your ship flies and responds to inputs this can cause a ship to be entirely crippled if thrusters are taken out thrusters will have some options when it comes to item choice as well so you can swap certain thrusters out for other thrusters that will be focused on different specializations atmospheric flight ships will fly significantly differently in atmosphere drag and lift is part of the model gravity wind and environments as well as how aerodynamic your ship is that’s all super important to flight now in atmosphere your thrusters will be under much more stress and atmosphere as well and VTOL thrusters being very useful and very effective at fighting against gravity and being in atmosphere the new flight model is being both designed and implemented by a dedicated flight immortal team led by David Colson the new system should see improvements or performance allowing for more ships in a small space to be active at once more improvements is good means multipliers means better quality stuff means more frame rates the first implementation of the new system is coming in alpha 3.5 at the end of March 2019 MPC’s and a ships will be updated for the system at the same time I also believe that the domed down ifcs for missiles is getting a fully updated with the new flight model as well and ESP as should be getting similar to and it’s all needs to be redone for the new model and they had an additional three months to actually get some of these fixes in and implemented a bit better than they would have been previously in three point four improvements and changes will be coming to ground vehicles and the gravel of system potentially at the same time though that is likely to be slightly further down the line ships will prefer different types of tactics and ways to fly them for example Cheyenne ships they are going to be very much decoupled moving in all directions being able to pivot their thrusters for very good sort of like responsiveness and agility whereas the human ships now are going to be much more like World War two or modern fighters what you have to think about maneuvering before you maneuver obviously your velocity carries is stuff’s gonna be a bit more slide II it’s very important to remember that this whole system is entirely an entire overhaul of the old one basically chucking out of the window and restarting it from scratch ships are gonna be very different based on their hull weapons choices items loadout for us to selection the skill of a pilot that’s all going to affect how these want to engage each other in the new model whether some of the metallicy were for some of them are very dogfighting some of them are literally rotating an orbiting targets it’s all going to be dependent on dozens of factors which will change based on your choices every month we have a giveaway for a star citizenship for January we have a standalone and for Carrick the mighty Explorer vessel all you need to do to be in for a chance of winning is be subscribed to my youtube channel and then comment on any of my videos released during the month you can find more details in the comments below if you don’t have a gaming pc yet or you’re upgrading instead consider shadow cloud gaming they allow you to leverage the powers of the internet to stream a high spec Windows 10 environment or any other PC Mac or device like a smartphone or tablet it is working really well in star citizen’s three point four branch and be sure to use the code board gamer if you do decide to check it out to get a discount links below all those of you wanting to support the channel further there is patreon but and I will be looking for an alternative platform as well for people that have requested that but in addition or as an attentive to that at the moment there’s With this change in the flight model, I wonder how do the current starter ships or popular older models such as Freelancers or Avengers stack up in terms of aerodynamics? Will there be ships strictly flyable in outer space vs others that are capable of planet landing?

I finally broke and got the starter package over the weekend. I even dug my old cheap flight stick out of the attic. Perhaps a few more weeks of waiting will not be a bad idea. I think the getting comfy using a flightstick is going to be hard since the last space sim I played was Wing Commander Prophecy back in 1997.

really excited for some of these changes, but im also skeptical of how this will affect dog fights. Either way, I guess i won't have a choice but to get used to it

I'm wondering if the largest ships in the game will have the highest top speed while the smaller ones will have the superior maneuverability & acceleration? Would make sense because the largest ships huge engines should more than compensate for their size. Or is that just Star Trek "rules"? 😉

I really hope the atmospheric flight punishes sliding. I'm not saying they should put in a simulator model, but something like the old ace combats would be great. I mean, whens the last time you saw a plane sliding sideways through the air? I would love the sense of being in air, sure side thrusters can make some movement, but it should stress the airframe and be useless at high speed. Something like that at least……..

Imagine flying in a hornet getting chased by another hornet while going full speed and just do a 180 without loosing speed and shoot down the hornet chasing you

The final iteration of the flight and combat models need to be fine-tuned so that new players can feel they are able to compete while at the same time providing more complex mechanics to keep it interesting for the best players. It's fairly easy to get off the ground in the current model, but without a HOTAS, hours of custom button mapping, and weeks of practice the current system has way too sharp of a learning curve. There should definitely be a learning curve on the higher end but basic flight and combat need to be easy to pick up immediately.

God I love this, but it's probably going to force me to abandon my current Elite Dangerous based keybinding setup :/

I could just imagine huge ships like the reclaimer trying to fly in atmosphere.
Or even bigger, what about the hull e (when it come out obviously)

Hopefully my avenger is aerodynamic and smooth in the atmosphere. The flying brick may have problems. I mean… it is a brick! No aerodynamics there!

I was going to jump in again for 3.4, but once the new FM moved to 3.5, I decided to hold off until 3.5. I didn't want to rebind all my HOSAS bindings and learn how to fly again, and then have to do it again in 3.5.

I'm wondering how these changes will affect my stock Aquila's handling in atmosphere; at present, it handles really well for its size.
