The Federalsburg Historical Society Talks About The Town’s Heritage Day On October 19

USE WHETHER YOUR LOCAL NEWS ON YOUR ECHO DEVICE WE HAVE A THROWBACK THURSDAY COMING AT YOU WE ARE TALKING ABOUT CANNING FOOD. SURE PEOPLE DO IT TODAY BUT THERE ARE RECORDS OF PEOPLE CANNING DATING BACK TO THE EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS PROBABLY EVEN EARLIER THAN THAT AS YOU PROBABLY REMEMBER THE TOWN OF FEDERALS BURG IS PLANNING ON REMEMBERING THOSE DAYS AND CELEBRATING THE ART OF CANNING THIS WEEKEND AS PART OF THE TOWN’S HERITAGE DAY WITH THIS AFTERNOON. THIS IS DICK WHEATLEY HE’S THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL BERG HISTORICAL SOCIETY THIS IS SECRETARY WENDI GARDNER JOINING US THIS AFTERNOON. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. SO DO I UNDERSTAND A BIG PART OF THIS EVENT IS THE CANNERY LABEL COLLECTIONS. YES A LOT OF TIMES THEY WERE THE SELECT LABELS THAT WOULD GO TO VARIOUS CANNING HOUSES AND THEY WERE HANDED TOMATOES SENT THEM TO A DISTRIBUTOR AND THEN VARIOUS LABELS WOULD BE PUT ON THEM THERE. SO SO THE SAME TOMATOES COULD HAVE FIVE DIFFERENT LABELS ON IT I WAS SAYING ME RIGHT NOW I’M SAYING HEY YEAH RIGHT. AND THEY WOULD THEN FROM THE DISTRIBUTOR THEY WERE SENT OUT TO DIFFERENT STORES AND THINGS LIKE THAT SO MANY PEOPLE PROBABLY ARE AWARE OR MAYBE NOT CANNING WAS BIG BUSINESS HERE ON DELMARVA WASN’T IT. YES. OVER 200 JUST IN CAROLINE COUNTY TWO HUNDRED CANNERIES YES. OH WOW. THAT’S SO LONG TIME SPAN PROBABLY FROM THE LATE EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS TO MAYBE NINETEEN EIGHTIES. HOW WELL WE GOT SET UP ON THE TABLE. WAS WELL THIS THE SCANT HERE OR EXCUSE ME THIS BUCKET HERE IS WHAT THE PEELINGS WENT IN. WHEN THEY PEELED THE TOMATOES THEY’LL GET TO THE FEELINGS WE GO IN HERE OKAY WE AND THIS IS APPEALING KNIFE ALWAYS THE FEELING KNIFE. THAT’S WHAT THEY USED TO PEEL TOMATOES FROM WAS MADE THROUGH THIS INTO THE BODY JUST HAND PEEL THEM IS WHAT THEY DID AND THEY PUT THE SKINS IN HERE AND TOMATOES HERE OKAY. AND THERE WAS A LINE OF ABOUT 25 OR 30 PEOPLE DID THE PEELING WOW. AND THEN OH PEOPLE WERE CAN’T STILL COUNT STAY HOME CANNING THAT’S BIG RIGHT. YEAH YEAH. I THINK THE LADIES ARE STILL DO IT JUST DO IT FOR A HOBBY BECAUSE YOU CAN GO TO A STORE BUY HIM A LOT CHEAPER AND A LOT EASIER. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT. THAT’S RIGHT GETTING RIGHT. SO HOW DOES ALL THIS WORK INTO THE HERITAGE DAY WELL WE ARE MUSEUM HAS A LOT OF DIFFERENT EXHIBITS BUT CANNING WAS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THE TOWN GREW BECAUSE OF AGRICULTURE. WE HAD THE RAILROAD STATION WE HAD THE MARSHY HOPE CREEK WHERE BOATS WOULD COME UP AND LOAD AND TAKE ME TO THE PRODUCE TO BALTIMORE PHILADELPHIA OTHER AREAS AND IT JUST SO HAPPENED CANING WAS BECOMING A BIG INDUSTRY. AND RATHER THAN SHIP THE PRODUCE OUT THEY CANNING FACTORIES IN PARTICULAR THE TOMATOES PICKLES THINGS LIKE THAT THE CUCUMBERS WERE A BIG COMMODITY ON THE EASTERN SHORE. BUT CANNING WAS HOW OUR TOWN GREW YOU HAD THE BASKET COMPANIES THAT MANUFACTURED THE BASKETS. WE HAD ACTUALLY A COMPANY IN THE EARLY NINETEEN HUNDREDS THAT PRODUCE CANS YOU HAD A COMPANY NEARBY THAT DID THE LABELS SO ALL THE INDUSTRY GREW AND BUILT THESE TOWNS AND BUSINESSES A LOT OF BUSINESS PEOPLE INVESTED IN DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF PRODUCE AGRICULTURE SO PART OF IT WE’RE GONNA TALKING ABOUT THAT THE HERITAGE FESTIVAL COMING UP THIS WEEKEND. AND GIVE DETAILS ON THAT BUT WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO HOLD EVENTS LIKE THESE. WELL I THINK IF YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TO SAVE PAST SO PEOPLE NOW REALIZE WHAT HAPPENED PRIOR TO THEM. I MEAN ESPECIALLY THE CHILDREN ONE OF THE THINGS WE DO EACH YEAR WE HAVE THE THIRD GRADERS COME DOWN TO THE MUSEUM AND VISIT. AND YOU CAN TELL THEM DIFFERENT EVENTS THAT HAPPENED IN THE PAST. THE CANDY INDUSTRY WOULD BE ONE EXPLAIN THEM BECAUSE THEY HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT IT’S ABOUT RIGHT NOW IT’S IN THE STORE. YEAH WITH KIDS HISTORY SOMETHING HAPPENED TWO WEEKS AGO. RIGHT. SO WITH YOU KNOW ANYTHING THAT WE CAN DO WITH THEM IN YEARS PAST WE’VE HAD DIFFERENT THEMES FOR HERITAGE DAY. WE HAD A SITE WE HAVE MADELINE SHERLOCK WHO WAS OUR SILENT MOVIE QUEEN FROM YEARS PAST THAT WE HAD SALUTED HER AND SO THINGS THAT WE CAN DO ANYTHING WE CAN PRESERVE AS OUR HERITAGE OF THE TOWN. AND YOU KNOW THEN GO AHEAD AND GIVE IT OUT TO ALL THE PEOPLE WE CAME. OK. SO GIVE US THE WORKERS AND THE WINDS OF HERITAGE DAY’S INCREDIBLE HERITAGE DAY IS SATURDAY OCTOBER 19TH FROM 10 TO 4:00 AT OUR MUSEUM WHICH IS LOCATED KOBE WILLIAMS ALLEY AND IT’S RIGHT BEHIND TOWN HALL AND THE POLICE STATION YEAH. SO YOU CAN’T MISS IT. WELL I WANT TO GIVE YOU YOUR TEAMMATE YEAH. HE IS OUR GUEST SPEAKER AND HE’LL BE THERE ONE O’CLOCK GIVING HIS PRESENTATION VERY INTERESTING PERSON. YES ABSOLUTELY THANK YOU. ALL RIGHT. QUICKLY AND WENDY GARDENER THANK YOU BOTH.
