The new frontier of LGBTQ civil rights, explained

Recent history has brought incredible progress for the LGBTQ community in the form of this map “…Total victory for the advocates of same
sex marriage..” But lesser known is this map over here – where things get tricky. “So does becoming a business owner mean you have to check your convictions at the door?” “Right now the state of Michigan does not
include sexual orientation and gender identity in its law” “I’m just really nervous” “I actually have something important to talk to you about today.” The fact is, in most states, it’s still currently legal to fire LGBTQ people, kick them out of a store or business that serves the public, or evict them from housing because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. “The ayes are 49, the nos are 50, the bill
is not agreed to.” Often it’s as subtle as a boss picking another job application. Or a landlord denying rent, without explanation. These are the rights
protected by the civil rights act of 1964. “My fellow Americans… those who founded our country knew that freedom would be secure only if each generation fought to renew and enlarge its meaning.” Following the passage of the Civil Rights
Act, federal and state laws prohibit this type of discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex and national origin. This is called Enumeration. If you list the
characteristics that are most often the subject of discrimination it removes any doubt that those people are protected. “Since these early days, I have seen and I
have experienced many other types of discrimination, and all of them were rooted in the fear of
people that were different from the majority.” But sexual orientation and gender identity
are not enumerated in most states and a report by the Human Rights Campaign found that lawmakers in 29 states have actually proposed bills that would actively discriminate against LGBTQ people. “We have what’s called a patchwork of civil rights protections on this issue in this country.” Sam Brownback, the governor of Kansas, went so far as to write an executive order to reverse a measure that barred employment discrimination against LGBTQ people. On top of all of this, there’s systematic
discrimination in many schools throughout the country. “Ellen Degeneres has been speaking out, voicing her outrage about the cruelty that spiraled out of control in our schools and beyond.” “Today is October 20th, 2013. Hopefully today will be a big day of my life. In a positive way.” The states in red here have “no promo homo” laws that forbid teachers in public schools from even mentioning homosexuality at all. “If you are reading this, it means that I
have committed suicide. Those words written on a warren country teenager’s tumblr page, and now sparking an outcry from the LGBTcommunity tonight.” That’s where coming out videos on YouTube like Drew’s and Adam’s are so helpful. “So I have something serious I want to talk to you about.” “Yeah, I like guys.” “I have to tell you that I’m gay. Always have been, always will be.” “And do you know how I drew that in 7th grade, and how in 7th grade I wanted to kill myself? It’s been something that I’ve not liked for
a while. Especially when people call me fag a lot.” “There are too many kids out there suffering from bullying, rejection, or simply being mistreated because of who they are.” And there’s proof that enumeration works. GLSEN, an organization that advocates for LGBTQ students, says students who go to school with enumerated LGBTQ policies experience significantly lower levels of bullying. “Federal investigators are looking into accusations that Minnesota’s largest school district discriminates against gay students following 7 student suicides in fewer than 2 years.” These are laws that save lives. 2012 was the first year in US History where more people supported same-sex marriage than people who didn’t. “I know I’m kind of destroying every hope
and dream you ever had for me…” “No! Not at all.” 2015 will be remembered for marriage equality. Public figures have been more open discussing their own sexuality. And popular TV shows have begun to incorporate more LGBTQ characters, and the stories they tell. But if you look at these two maps, side by
side, it’s clear the LGBTQ civil rights battles are far from over.

I almost became a statistic around the year 2000. Kind strangers on the internet who took time away from their lives to talk to me kept me from being a statistic. You never really know how your words will affect others, and sadly, the internet has become a rather hostile place. No matter how bad things seem right now, things will improve with time. I know this from experience.

My home state discriminates people in the lgbtq+ community. Looks like I can't get a job, house, or an acceptance letter to one college. No wonder why I'm told to die :/

The reason they are commiting suicide is not completely because they are bullied But they also have serious depression. I mean I was picked on in school because I was fat suicide never crossed My mine for three reasons 1. I was Christian and loved God and family 2nd I lost the wait later because I worked hard to fix it 3rd. My parents helped me get over the bullying. Don't tell me bullying is the only cause of suicide in the LGBT community it's depression or serious mental problem and also sometimes it's a choice. I mean their has been several cases where men and women chose the opposite sex over what they claimed they were attracted to.

Let me get this out there. There are only two chromosomes assigned to your sex (or gender). This means that there are only two possible genders that a person can be. If this offends you, I am sorry. But next time, maybe read a biology book. Again, I am sorry if this offends you, but to me, it is perfectly correct.

People have opinions. They can be the way that they grow up or it could be religion reasons. They have a right as the business to say "no". And if you are judging somebody by the religion isn't that discriminatory?

I fail to see why everyone is stumped on whether or not the civil rights act applies to them or not. It simply does. As far as same sex marriage goes. You humans simply need a new word. Let marriage mean whatever, and simply come up with something else that means what you want it to mean. Same sex marriage is too long a term. So pick something from Latin. Or ancient egyptian. Something cool.

How would you feel if you lost custody of your son, or daughter … (boys need moral instruction – does not the rite of circumcision say, "lust not" ? – fornication is "sex without love" – will his new parents teach him that the devil is in the church places, the classroom, workplace and government? Will they prepare him for battle against evil, in this war between good and evil?), …. during a divorce, your spouse remarries and you discover the child you previously knew as your own, is now being raised by an lgbt couple? .. well, you might think, "At least they are not nazis. And a vegan lifestyle is healthier. .. good luck son.. or powergirl princess." But is that not to accept the lessor of two evils? Sometimes, you have to go through a valley to reach higher ground, but you ought to be always looking up … Always Looking Up, is the title of a book by Michael J Fox… It was a breezy read, like one of those readers digest magazine stories, but the coverart was truly inspirational, and really summed up the book for me.

One of the reasons that LGBTq ( 5 letters? Do you really need the last one? ) rights are promoted is to lend credence to the false teaching , "you are a jew if your mother is a jew".
They desire to say, This lgbtq person being jewish is better – more acceptable to God – than that "black man" who may, or may not be lgbtq, standing over there. ..
Eugenics, "racism", master race, divine right to rule, etc. – is what they believe in and promote. So, for them, it becomes a conundrum how a "white couple", "jewish couple", can have a devil for a child. So, they seek to grant lgbtq people "rights" but they really seek to create a society where persons are judged on the basis of genetic heritage rather than see a meritocracy – a society in which behaviour determines how others regard you.
The seek to justify the wicked – that is their religion, and it is not judaism or christianity as they claim it to be.

HOW CAN YOU BEGIN TO FIGHT, IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE ENEMY EXISTS ?

How is this still a problem? If some bakery doesn’t want to bake for you (because of religious purposes), go to another bakery, like??? It’s not that hard. People have the right to deny you based on what they believe because…oh right the first amendment.

Idk why everyone makes about lgbt people being discriminated. Its about the right of the private business to choose who to do business with. Like maybe discriminating against someone is morally wrong but its a free country and if a business discriminates they will make less money. Its amazing to see people throwing away their freedom.

The few states that have extended us our basic rights will have those protections removed, two cases are already heading through the courts.

These issues of discrimination protect the current taxation laws, that's really what they are protecting. But, they will defend or not defend human trafficking, but each key stroke I type costs a tax payer money, that's really what they are protecting. The mockery of it is out of greed to win power as a co-integral of money for the wealthy, Jesus Christ knew this and forgave humanity. "Had all trustees followed the way of peace, then the brutality from others would need no form of existence." That's the truth!

We are just getting tired of anything and everything you seem as being a hate crime. Or that if you don't get something its because you are gay or whatever. Stop making something out of nothing. That's why people are tired of hearing it. We accept you. You all just want us to alsk LIKE IT. You can't Force that. I'll accept it. It's your life just don't expect the Majority to conform to the minority. That's wrong.

I do not believe in homosexuality but I do not believe that people who engage in homosexual activities should be treated any less then someone who is straight. I also do not believe homosexuality should be betrayed as being normal it is about as normal as lions raising hyenas dogs racing cats and saltwater fish surviving in freshwater all though at times things we perceived as being impossible at times become known to us as being possible it is still a phenomeno.
