US Citizen Renewing Passport Told To Turn In Green Card

US Citizen Renewing Passport Told To Turn In Green Card

A ROWLETT MAN PLANNING A VACATION ABROAD IS WORRIED NOW AFTER HIS NEW PASSPORT CAME WITH A WARNING. THE REPORT ON THE MIXUP HE IS EAGER TO FIX. THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE, BORN IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, IN A HOSPITAL. IT’S ALL DOCUMENTED. Reporter: TONY AIRITAM IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN A U.S. CITIZEN, BUT WHEN HE RENEWED HIS PASSPORT THIS YEAR, IT ARRIVED WITH A LETTER. PLEASE RETURN YOUR INVALID PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD. Reporter: IT’S A STEP CLAIMED TO REFLECT THE UPGRADED SYSTEM FOR CURRENT CITIZENSHIP STATUS. FIRST I HAD TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT A PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD WAS. I WAS NOT ONLY SURPRISED, BUT I WAS REALLY CONCERNED. Reporter: MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS A GREEN CARD, IT’S NOT A DOCUMENT AIRITAM HAS EVER HAD OR EVER NEEDED. BECAUSE I WAS BORN HERE IN THE UNITED STATES. Reporter: BOTH HIS PREVIOUS AND NEWLY LISTED PASSPORT LIST HIS BIRTHPLACE AS NEW YORK. SO HE CALLED THE NUMBER PROVIDED. THEY WERE CONFUSED IN HOW THAT HAPPENED, BUT THEY DIDN’T HAVE ANY ANSWERS. Reporter: AIRITAM WAS TOLD TO VISIT THE NEAREST U.S. CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION OFFICE NEARLY A 30-MILE DRIVE AWAY IN IRVING AND THE NEXT AVAILABLE APPOINTMENT HERE IS IN MARCH. EVEN THEN THE DEPARTMENT SPOKESPERSON TOLD ME THERE’S NOTHING IT CAN DO. SINCE AIRITAM NEVER IMMIGRATED, THIS OFFICE WOULDN’T HAVE ANY RECORD OF HIM. I’M GOING TO GIVE THEM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT AND THAT’S WHY I MADE THE APPOINTMENT. Reporter: AIRITAM SAID RECENT INCREASED SCRUTINY OF INTERNATIONAL TRAVELERS HAS HIS NERVOUS. I THINK IT SHOULD RAISE CONCERNS FOR ANYBODY WHO GETS A DISCREPANCY WITH THEIR PASSPORTS. Reporter: HE WAS HOPING TO CELEBRATE HIS 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY WITH A TRIP ABROAD. NOW HE’S HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS. I WOULD NOT LEAVE THIS COUNTRY WITHOUT THIS RESOLVED. Reporter: IN ROWLETT, ANDREA LUCIA, CBS11 NEWS.

Sir, don’t waste your time nor gas on going to the USCIS office.

You were born an American citizen. That office would have absolutely nothing to offer you.

Mistakes can be made, I understand that.

This one is quite bizarre though.

Liberals always playing the fear card. Nothing about nothing. So I lost my hazmat from my CDL , because I’m latino? No- it happens to all CDL drivers. Fake News! Do an investigation before throwing more wood to your agenda. I guarantee you- that He will be fine.

You pick the story that feeds your agenda and promote it- just like Hitler. . Remember a half true- still a lie. Latinos that feel so ostracized and still love it here at a minimum are brainwashed. You’re going to tell me that in your great country- where u came from- bad stuff don’t happen? If you want a perfect home I suggest heaven because it sure is not here. The USA is a great Country- not perfect- I’m grateful and blessed to live here. No one is forcing you to live here, if you don’t like it here. No one! Seat down and count your blessings. Don’t join the ingrates, be thankful

I not only believe him but have seen this happen in many forms! A friend born in New York with a African mother and Irish Caucasian father appears Hispanic! We live in California and this is the early 90s! She was walking minding her own business when Border A**hole and asked her was she a citizen and even after stating yes born in New York they still tried to deport her! We got a call from her crying begging us to get there fast! Her husband got there just as they were supposed to be sending her to Mexico!

Since she looks Hispanic she has been subjected to so many prejudices and stereotypes! She married a Caucasian man and their children looked Caucasian but when she would be doing her daily errands with them in the stroller countless times people asked to hire her to watch their children along hers because they assumed her to be the nanny! She would go to nursery school to get her oldest and it never failed that new staff refused to give her her son! They immediately tried to direct her to any child of Hispanic origins! She was even told repeatedly that inspire of being a citizen she needed to carry her immigration documents to be able to conduct business from enrolling her kids in school, trying to rent an apartment, getting WIC and these micro aggressions aren’t just a one off! Sadly the political environment is so xenophobic that now I am scared for her living in California fearing next time Immigration will deport her overseas before anyone can help her!

Why is immigration making so many errors about US born citizens? They need to clean up their records.

Sounds like a bureaucratic government error. With dna biometrics collected when getting a driver’s license, this should be easy to reconcile with his birth certificate and other legal documents like ss#, bank accounts, tax returns, etc.

I'm thinking it's either someone with simalr name, mess up in immigration department or identity theft becuase it is impossible for that to happen unless you voluntarily renounce your citizenship.

Just because your illegal parents dropped you on American soil, it doesn't make you a citizen.

So where is you “birth certificate”? If like you said you were born in USA just show them your BC and SS card. If you don’t have it. Sorry! Something wrong with your case there. Good luck.

Being born in the US does not make you a citizen. You retain whatever status your parents are at that time. One you're 18 you'll have to immigrate if your parents didn't.
