Was ist Citizen Science? (1/4)

To me, Citizen Science is the active
collaboration of citizens and researchers on scientific research projects. What is Citizen Science? To me Citizen Science projects are projects in
which researchers and laypeople work together, whereby laypeople is not
meant to sound degrading. Many citizens of all ages
are bigger experts in some research areas than
some university researchers. Citizen Science is, for me, the involvement
of citizens in the whole research process. When a motivated public, laypeople as wells as pupils collaborate
in research projects. It means that people who are
not qualified researchers still contribute to a research team and do research together with us. Creating knowledge together, this means that projects are conducted with help of laypeople. Citizen Science, to me, is the involvement
of a broad public in the research process, but also making the data
of this research available to the public. This way citizens can continue
doing research independently, so to say, ask their own research questions
and start their own research projects. Citizen Science is a good way to
transfer scientific research. For me Citizen Science is
all about sparking interest and joy for science and to answer new
research questions with help of the public. With Citizen Science the knowledge of
citizens is incorporated into research. With help of this active
involvement of laypeople scientific goals and
findings can be achieved faster. I, as a researcher, am also
a layperson in other research areas. I believe this link between me
as a private person and me as a researcher is important when reaching out to laypeople. All in all I believe Citizen Science to be a
valuable instrument for society, which can contribute substantially to a
sustainable development of our society.
