What if I have dual citizenship? – State Department: Consular Affairs

It depends it’s very contextual it
depends on where you have that dual citizenship. Very often and this would be a call that our diplomatic security folks would make. Generally that if you have a
citizenship say Chile and you’re trying to get posted to Chile it’s probably
not going to happen even if you renounce if you could renounce but that
means there are 26 plus other potential Spanish-speaking countries that you
could serve in and that should not be a problem. Some countries like Brazil for
Portuguese speaking [inaudible] you can’t legally renounce the dual
citizenship so they will make a a case-by-case determination to see what the risk level is to your family etc for serving in
that area. The department over the last decade has
been a little more liberal in allowing people to keep that dual citizenship as
long as they’re not serving in regions that would pose a risk or a problem.
