Recently, Narendra Modi Government passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill Act, 2016 Since then this Bill has been a topic of discussion once again. In this video, we will be talking about this Bill. Indian Citizenship Amendment Bill is also known as ‘Nagrikta Sanshodhan Bill’ This Bill was introduced in the year 1995 to define who will be termed as an Indian Citizen and related parameters which will define their Indian Citizenship. According to Citizenship Act, 1995 only people having legal & valid documents were given the citizenship of India. But since 2016, Narendra Modi Government introduced few amendments to this Act and termed it as “Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016”. Before getting to know about Indian Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 let’s see what has been mentioned about Citizenship in Indian Constitution. Let’s start with Article 5! This Article mentions about Indian Citizenship when Indian Constitution was about to get implemented. Article 6 deals with the Right to Indian Citizenship and this Article was meant for those people who had migrated to India from some other place. Article 7 is dedicated towards people who migrated to Pakistan from India after 1st day of March 1947. and these people were not given Indian Citizenship. Article 8 deals with people who have Indian Citizenship but reside somewhere other than India. Article 9 states that those individuals who have acquired foreign citizenship voluntarily won’t be eligible for Indian Citizenship. Article 10 is meant for individuals who continue with Indian Citizenship Rights. And in the end, Article 11 According to this article, Parliament will regulate Indian Citizenship Rights by law. Now let’s talk about some important points about this Bill. According to Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 Individuals from 6 different religions coming from Pakistan, Afghanistan & Bangladesh who have resided in India for 6 years, will be given citizenship even without proper documents. And these 6 religions are Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists & Christians This Bill also became a topic of discussion as it provides Indian citizenship to illegal migrants on the basis of religion which violates the Article 14 of Indian Constitution which is Right to Equality. If any law is violated by the Overseas Indian Citizens, then this Bill can even cancel out the Indian Citizenship registrations of the concerned OCIs. Now the answer to the question asked in the start of this video. We asked you, what is the full form of NRC? The answer is “National Register of Citizens”. This register verifies who is an Indian Citizen and who is not. Individuals not having their names in this register are termed as Illegal Indian Citizen.
