What Michigan Residents Need to Know about Real ID

The rules are changing for
driver’s licenses and state ID cards and you may have a choice to make. Beginning October 1, 2020, Michigan residents must show
a Real ID-compliant document to travel by airplane within the U.S. Here’s everything you need to know
about the Real ID Act. On October 1, 2020,
Michigan driver’s licenses and ID cards must be Real ID-compliant
for use when flying domestically. Other documents, such as a valid U.S. passport,
are also accepted under the law. Visit the Transportation Security Administration
website for a complete list. A Real ID-compliant license or ID
will have a star in a gold circle printed on your license or ID card. Enhanced licenses and enhanced ID cards,
which already meet the Real ID federal standards, have the American flag printed on them
instead of the star. If you would like to apply
for a Real ID-compliant card, visit a Secretary of State
branch office and bring: a certified U.S. birth certificate
with a stamp or raised seal; a valid, unexpired U.S. passport
or passport card; or an approved citizenship
or legal presence document; and your glasses or contacts
if they are used for driving. A new photograph will be taken
and any applicable fees will be charged. There is no extra fee for a
Real ID-compliant license or ID card. The only fees associated with the transaction
would be the regular fees whether you are renewing,
replacing a lost or stolen card or applying for a corrected card
to add the Real ID designation. You may be required to provide additional
documentation before your Real ID is issued. For more information
and a list of acceptable documents, please visit www.michigan.gov/realID. Real ID is not required. Your standard license or ID card will have
“Not for federal identification” printed on it
to show that it is not compliant. Your standard license or state ID
remains valid for driving and may be used as identification
for cashing checks, renting vehicles, purchasing alcohol and tobacco
or entering casinos. However, if you do wish to travel
by plane within the U.S. or enter certain federal buildings, you will need a Real ID by October 1, 2020. Avoid flight delays, visit a Secretary of
State branch office for your Real ID.

This is an inconvenience for any of us who don't fly, ever! Come on in and get your Dr. Suess Gold Star marked on ya, so you can fly- even though you don't. lol You had to show your birth certificate to get your license, now you have to show it again to get a star…..Wahoo!!! Inconvenience at it finest!

Real ID is not the invention of the State of Michigan. It is a federal requirement. If you are not flying or entering federal buildings, you donโ€™t need it.

I'm having a hard time getting a copy of my certified name change from the 90's. It is expensive to get a certified birth certificate and name change along with the cost of getting the REAL ID.
If the state is requiring this the state should pay for it! It's a money pit.

But, didn't you already have to show your birth certificate and a proof of residence when you first get your license? Why do you want to see it again?
