Where will a career in the Civil Service take you?

My name is Will Gazzard, I’m 23 years old
and I work of the Department of Culture of Media and Sport as a Tourism Policy Advisor. So my role’s really quite varied, the main
sort of aspect of it is getting tourists to come to the UK and stay in the UK and spend
their money in the UK. Projects I’ve been involved in? Obviously the Rugby World Cup,
I’ve worked on a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parliament Square and I’ve also done
a couple of receptions in Number 11 Downing Street. I got into the Civil Service through the Fast
Track Apprenticeship Scheme. There were a number of students from my college in the
year above me that applied for it. I spoke to them, looked at the process they went through
and thought “yeah, that’s something I’m interested in”. Yeah I do yeah. Like I said earlier it’s
really really varied. The work you do is really really exciting and it’s completely different
to what I expected it to be. I kind of expected the Civil Service to be
full of older people based on the reputation it has, but it’s not like that at all. I
mean there’s a lot of young people coming through, it’s a really really challenging
environment and you get to work on all different kinds of areas and topics. I definitely recommend working in the Civil
Service to other young people. There’s so many opportunities up and down the country,
you can go into any industry you think you might enjoy.
