Spot on description of Spain. Lived there for a year, they have lost all their ambition. They think that their country is crud and basically think about the Golden Age of Spain. That is really mostly what they teach in Spanish high schools in history classes that I have taught.

Spain had a larger empire than Portugal, but Portugal had more colonies around the world than Spain.

Portugal had colonies in more than 50 countries on Earth today, from South America to Africa and Asia, whilst Spain had colonies in about 30 countries on Earth today, mostly in America. These are the facts. The Portuguese empire was a much more global empire than Spain, and was the one that kick started globalization. In that respect, it was only surpassed by the British empire, but 300 years later.

And the Portuguese were able to achieve all that with a mere population of 1 million people, whilst the Spanish had a population of 7 million and the British 10 million! Still, the Portuguese empire managed to outlast all of them. Was the first to be born and the last to die. Not enough credit is given to the Portuguese.

Spain had a larger empire, but not too many colonies.

Portugal had much more colonies, but a very small empire.

British came after and pretty much, managed to be a bigger empire and have a shit ton of colonies so yeah.

    Define "having more colonies"
Is it by land area or administrative regions?
Because the Netherlands for example had hundreds of colonial trade posts but they were rather small in area.
On the other hand, colonial regions like Canada, Brazil and Australia were massive.
Also, is it in total or at its peak?
Because although some nations like Spain peaked in the Discovery Age and the declined in the 18th century while others like France and England peaked in the Scramble for Africa, nations like Portugal peaked twice, once in Asia during the Discovery Age and later in Africa during the scramble for Africa.

Technically Spain once had Spain and Portugal united and it was factually the 2# biggest country above UK, the first one was actually the Mongol Empire AT ITS ACTUAL HIGHEST REACH, UK is only 1# when english propaganda comes around.

Fact here… Spain NEVER had colonies, conquered territories in far land where considered a part of Spain with the same rights and considerations as the metropoli. In other words, inhabitants of those lands were considered as spanish citizens of full right… not like England. And to every tea pot head that has something to say to this i'll just have 3 words…

Portugal did not have many colonies but it certainly had the biggest sphere of influence.

We controlled the entirety of the southeren Atlantic ocean AND the Indic Ocean.

Every naval transaction to Africa and Asia went through us first, and that made us POWERFUL!

We pretty much ruled the Southeren Hemisphere.

    Correct Script:

Spain: I am the Empire on which the Sun Never Sets!
Portugal: sigh Yep. Sure buddy. Now pay up, we still control the southeren Atlantic and the entire Indic Ocean and that shipment of Spices you ordered has a tax on it.
Spain: Fuck you, I have more colonies!
The UK: AMATE– Oh hey Portugal how you doing?
Portugal: If it isn't my old ally, the UK! Here's that shipment of spices you ordered. Tax-free, just cause you're my best mate!
    Spain: WHAT THE FU-
Portugal: stabs Spain with longsword Oh, shut up already.
